The preparations for our HEGL Christmas activity this year are complete. Can you guess what we're going to do?

Currently the Heidelberg Laureate Forum #HLF @hlforum.bsky.social is taking place in our city. We went there to show off the lovely objects we have at the Geometry Lab. People at HLF really enjoyed playing around with them.
Three images showing the collection of objects brought from the Geometry Lab to the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. These include many 3D prints of interesting geometries, but also games based on geometry and maths.

The stereographic projection is an old mapping from the sphere to the plane. The image shows a sphere with a distorted pattern on it. Using light the regular pattern is revealed. This is exactly the way the mapping works. The model is available: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5072032 #math #geometry
Light shining through a model to reveal a regular pattern on the table. This is exactly how the stereographic projection works.

Recently, we held a workshop on 3D printing and laser cutting at HEGL. We had a great time with everyone who attended and are incredibly happy that some even left the workshop with 3D prints and laser cuttings created by them. Thank you to everyone who participated! #math

How can we fairly share a cake? And how can we use this question to teach students mathematics? You can find answers to both questions in a recent HEGL blog post about a student seminar that was focused on creating materials for school use. hegl.mathi.uni-heidelberg.de/unterrichtsv...

Are you curious about 3D printing & laser cutting? Then join us in the HEGL 3D Printing and Laser Cutting Workshop. See how these tools can turn your research into real objects and get the chance to create and print your models. No prior knowledge needed! hegl.mathi.uni-heidelberg.de/registration...

In 1990, 42nd Street in New York City was closed. Counterintuitively, traffic improved as a result. This phenomenon can be explained by Braess’s Paradox. In his blog post Luca M. Tittel explores Braess's Paradox and explains why it occurs. hegl.mathi.uni-heidelberg.de/braesss-para... #geometry #math

The game Dobble/Spot It! has an interpretation within projective geometry. The game with 7 different symbols then corresponds to the Fano-Plane. A model for this can be seen in the picture above, and is also available for you to print yourself: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5210739 #math #geometry

What is a mathematical proof, and how can we represent it? This was tackled in a student seminar at HEGL by working with Lean, a proof assistant used to create and verify proofs. In their blog post (tinyurl.com/4hdm2x25) you can find more details on Lean and Constructive Algebra. #maths #geometry

For the faculty's "Day of Mathematics" we offered a workshop on the projective geometry behind the game Dobble/Spot It! and how to build your own version of the game. It was great fun taking part. See tinyurl.com/5caxtzj9 to find out more about our workshops. #math #outreach #geometry

Hello 👋 We are now here too! We do research in the field of geometry and dynamics, exchange ideas with other sciences and organise several activities to communicate math to a wide audience. Here we want to report about all this. 😀 You can also find us on mathstodon @Geometry_Dynamics_Heidelberg
