Kids know, even if it's not everything at once. I was in KG when I first felt different from other kids. 1st grade when I hated my uniform (catholic school) and liked what girls were wearing. Bugs of the arcade era with GAME FREAK 'zine. In its Encyclopedia issue in 1984, it gave a brief rundown of how it's a term for a program error and provided a few examples. Such as how in Donkey Kong's early production models, you could clear stage one by jumping Mario backwards off a ledge.
