It is now the final day of the campaign for Cynder and we are still about halfway from our goal, but we can reach it if we get a lot of new visitors. Help us make the book by backing or sharing and get more cool art like you see below. There will always be someone who discovers a new favorite. :)

Hi all. Bluesky updated midday yesterday and ceased support for certain computers. It sucks. No server-wide announcement or anything. Getting caught up now on phone. For anyone getting .canparse error it may be permanent. Phone app is a workaround but awkward typing.

Lastly today, our d6 system in #Cynder uses dice combos to attack and perform special actions. You and the Shaper (GM) roll at the start of the round and assign your pool of dice to actions. With skill, planning, and a bit of luck, you can succeed! May the dice be in your favor. #TTRPG #gamedesin

Dice Throne is like Yahtzee if they were fantasy characters hitting each other with dice.

You cannot get more dice than Dicey Dungeon.

Fights in #Cynder use some theater of the mind. Literally. Opposing sides face each other with fighters in the front, mid, and back rows, like a dramatic scene taking place on stage. Positioning is key. Enemies are more likely to attack the front row while the back shoots arrows. #TTRPG #gamedesign

In #Cynder the mechanical and narrative elements meet in gameplay. Your chosen kindred (race/ancestry) gives you a list of possible bonuses and suggestions for physical appearance. How do your physical characteristics inform your abilities? Bright eyes to see in the dark, etc. #TTRPG #gamedesign

Events in #Cynder present the players with one or more choices, usually with challenges of skill. You have immediate outcomes and rewards, and consequences that won't show up (maybe) until later. Do you help the strange merchant in case he returns the favor someday? #TTRPG #gamedesign

Gristly events in Kingdom Death Monster that I partially censored. They have a wide array of possible outcomes.

Event cards in Myth Dark Frontier. The number is the target to beat. The green box is a success and the red is failure.

A random event card in Robinson Crusoe. The top portion is what you choose. If you take this card for food, shuffle it back in and then WHAM, if you draw it again later you all get sick.

Dungeons are, at their essence, a bunch of rooms tied together by narrative thread. It helps to visualize them as interconnected tiles. The dungeons in #Cynder are some of the most dangerous places you will explore in search of magic and riches. #TTRPG #gamedesign

I love maps! They evoke that feeling of wanderlust and mystery, and budding familiarity as you get to know the world. In #Cynder, the world expands outward on a hex-grid as you explore. It is not totally random. You decide on the general size of the map before play begins. #TTRPG #gamedesign

Heroes 3 the board game. The big cardboard hexes make it easier to read than the actual video game at a glance. I also considered Songs of Conquest and the atlas in Path of Exile 2. Can't refuse the classic.

The great thing about being a game designer is I get to gush about my work. With OCT I get to say "chaos dice" dramatically and come up with oddball class combos. With the D&D settings I get to point out obscure myths and historical references that were lodged in my head. With Rao we got in print!

The biggest influences on Cynder are: The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, The Hobbit, The Dark Crystal, and Redwall. Every story we read, or played in a game, or watched growing up helped make our games. They foster our sense of adventure and love of new worlds.

The most exciting thing about a new #pathofexile league, after the trailer, is spending forever in the skill tree trying to map out a league themed build that will definitely work. It is one of the few videogames where I get to nerd out over spreadsheets and calculations.

Combat in Cynder uses a form of range bands to figure distance for your attacks and abilities. You have the front, middle, and back row on each side of the encounter, somewhat similar to close and rearward stances in The One Ring. Characters in the front row are more likely to be targeted. 1/

Cynder is inspired in part by fairytales and stories where folks didn't give up despite their size or the odds stacked against them. There is an element of darkness in such tales. They talk of death, pain and despair. But the folks in those stories never give up. They hold onto hope and persevere.
