I mean… Koumas and Muñoz weren’t better than Wirtz and Barcola, though? How have things gotten so stupid? #LFC

This is why so many #LFC supporters insisted that we needed another two attackers this summer. Koumas is active. I love his desire. His off-ball movement and his first touch leave Liverpool utterly toothless in the final third. Plus, Muñoz is a creative force on the wings. He can’t finish moves.

I’m genuinely glad that City seem poised for massive penalties, but I’m a bit annoyed at all these people who are suddenly outraged. Didn’t we all know this was happening? Perhaps not the exact numbers or whatever, but didn’t we already know?

Enjoyed this. I think this is ultimately Liverpool’s plan to deal with the strict homegrown player quotas and to develop a squad big enough to handle multiple competitions each season. But it will take several years to come to fruition. And I’m not sure supporters will see it as “transfer strategy.”

Michael Owen is constantly talking about how bad Florian Wirtz has been this year, and that’s completely true… if you ignore the games in which he’s been decent and/or good. #LFC

Strange that #LFC look worse *again* without Nyoni on the pitch and with Grav and Szoboszlai. How many times do we have to do this, folks?

I dunno how many times we have to watch Liverpool play better with Nyoni in the game before he gets starts, but the Gravenberch - Szoboszlai double pivot is consistently awful.

The sad thing is that #LFC players have had a lot of solid-to-good ideas. The touches have just been horrendous—most recently evidenced by that Ngumoha attempted pass that was about 10 yards off the mark.

It’s kinda funny to see Spurs struggle like this, but I picked Brentford to finish 7th this season. I also picked Brentford as my sure bet to win in FPL’s “Survivor Challenge” thing.

No, *you* had Ndiaye and Sangaré in your FPL lineup and “upgraded” to get Gibbs-White.

Many Americans do like sports. Every sports league insists on things like this to engage with people who do *not* like sports. In fact, it’s why many folks who do not like American football watch the Super Bowl: the halftime show and the ads.

MLS owners should’ve been all over Cuypers—for more than $7.5M. Too bad they’re only willing to spend on “stars” who will sell tickets/jerseys. They’re not interested in spending big money to, ya know, win. Because winning doesn’t really matter to them all that much.

MLS works to bring in a new generation of fans as the World Cup comes to an end
In 1994, the last men's World Cup the U.S. hosted sparked soccer fever, from youth leagues to TV broadcasts to the formation of MLS. Now, can MLS harness this World Cup for a new generation of fans?

Good, young homegrown players are going for £100M. It’s not surprising that Morgan Rogers would command such a fee. Except, I guess, for the fact that I’m not actually sure he’s that good. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

4. By taking us all out of the moment
The biggest problem with VAR has nothing to do with any specific intervention. The biggest problem with VAR is how it affects the way we experience the game as a whole, including the parts that don't involve VAR at all. Watching sports is about being in the moment. The entire appeal of spectator sports is that you will get to see exciting things and have strong feelings about them. A player scores a sensational goal. You jump up out of your seat. You scream. You hug someone. You can't feel your face.
The World Cup feels most magical at those times when a billion people are collectively sharing a transportive experience. Maybe some of us are feeling joy and some of us are feeling anguish, but we all know that anguish is part of the deal. Sports promise us intensity, not happiness. At its best, the World Cup joins us in an almost unbelievable intensity; we are all here, in the moment, together. How does VAR affect that magic? I can speak only for myself, but I increasingly find myself holding off, hanging back, not reacting to what should be thrilling moments—or if I do react, it's with one eye on the referee, waiting to see if the thing I'm reacting to will be allowed to stand. Once confirmation comes, the excitement is a bit more muted than it would have been otherwise, a bit less spontaneous. And I hate this! Of course, as an inconsistent idiot, I'll always celebrate when a reversed call benefits my team. On a philosophical level, though? I'd rather be burned by the occasional on-field injustice than spend my whole soccer-watching life glancing over my shoulder to see if an accountant is about to cancel my emotions.

Liverpool, Iraola, and Heavy-Metal Football
Priority #1 for Andoni Iraola this season should be to re-establish Liverpool's modern identity of playing aggressive, high-pressing football.

I mean, some English team should jump at this. He’s potentially a starting-quality homegrown midfielder for a midtable squad in the Prem. The valuation feels light from #LFC.

There are reports that #LFC is asking for £40M to buy Curtis Jones. If accurate, Prem Clubs should do that before spending £50M on Andrey Santos or £80M+ on Mateus Fernandes.

FIFA, as a five-year-old: “You can't do that because… [looks around breathlessly]… because you didn't ask the queen [holds up a stuffed animal] directly!” Me: “I deeply apologize. Your majesty…” FIFA, shocked: “You are NOT allowed to speak directly to the queen. Are you crazy?!” #FIFA #USMNT

#USMNT has been playing some of the best soccer I’ve seen since paying attention 20-some years ago. It’s such a shame to see the players’ efforts marred by this kinda shit. If they win against Belgium, the victory now comes with an asterisk. So dumb.

As a USMNT fan, it will be great to have Flo Balogun against Belgium. But, at the same time, this is so lame and reeks of corruption. “But FIFA is corrupt all the time. What can you expect?” Yeah, bro. Whatever you need to tell yourself to feel better about it. This is lame. #USMNT

Spurs spend £53M to buy Van Hecke from Brighton. Brighton buy Vuskovic from Spurs for £45M. Spurs spend £100M on Tonali from Newcastle. Newcastle are gonna overpay for Archie Gray from Spurs. These are “separate” deals, tho, for sure. No one is inflating the value of anyone or anything. 👍

This World Cup illustrates why technology won’t “fix” the game or stop complaints about calls or the rules. The complaints about offsides will just change. People say they want consistency, but most people don’t. People crave a feeling of justness, which is unquantifiable and inconsistent.
