Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I'm literally keeping certain issues alive on our GHI as honey pots for these things for no other reason than it helps distract shit like openclaw bots and the like from getting in the way. 040
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I've seen too many (attempted) contributors that treat this like it's an instant win button or something as of late. 040
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Sometimes it's worse than that. Sometimes it's you're performing a code review that the person is feeding back through the LLM with literally zero understanding of the implications of the review or what they're changing. And it shows very quickly. 250
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 08/10/2026In the most charitable case, LLMs can take boring parts of coding out of the process. That still requires actual engineering that (spoilers) does not save you much time. "Claude fix the bug plan mode make no mistakes or go2jail" is not that. 140
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 08/10/2026We have genuinely considered expanding our use of an AGENTS file that outright tells LLMs they're not welcome without being in a prior authorization file somewhere to the SL Viewer due to various low quality slop PRs we get. Some don't even include code, just a plan file with a BTC address. 1110

Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 05/10/2026SteamVR likes to suddenly have an irrecoverable aneurism that you will need to hard reboot the headset over 030

Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I created an account to post up my vent posts on some of the more sensitive and, well, frankly terrible things that have happened in my life at @geenzvent.bsky.social. Wanna keep that shit away from people who don't want to see that stuff. I hope this will be the only time I post about it here. 030

Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Wouldn't it be funny if in the Metal Gear universe that the Snakes are the only ones that have the unique ability of having an inventory 110

Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I want a shower that makes me look like a world ending threat in a secret ultra-max prison in a movie 151
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The foveated streaming with steam link on the Quest Pro honestly felt much better than what we have on the Frame. It’s kinda weird. It could just be my setup, but I’ve also seen noticeable latency between my headpose and the streamed output even with the dongle. 010
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Almost got VolaryRender in a releasable state. Frametimes are almost down to 4ms - a good chunk of that was some PGO in slang-rhi such as improving parameter caching and the like. There's still some bugs in there, but I'm hoping I won't be waiting past November to get the first alpha out. 000
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 03/10/2026- MaterialX support needs to be moved into VolaryTools. Shader gen should be able to happen offline rather than live. VolaryRender should have no direct concept of MaterialX 010
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I definitely want to achieve high enough quality that you can just live pose models and build scenes that you can have close to offline render quality. I'm not 100% sure I can get there, but I can get close with DDGI and the shadow system. 020
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 03/10/2026- Docs are nowhere near ready - Blender support is USD format only right now. - I want to have an "Advanced Tools" product for this that gives you a live viewport into a canvas - OpenXR support - Gonna need both multiview and instanced per view rendering for this - (big maybe) Steam Frame??? 120
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 03/10/2026 - Cooking will come in both Runtime and Offline flavors. So no need to pre-cook everything - it'll generate its asset caches automatically. - DDGI needs some love. I need a static path and a dynamic path. - I'm not 100% happy with some bits of the code quality - Optimization opportunities. 110
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Hokay, so VolaryRender's V1 alpha is shaping up. A few things to do: - The cooking tools need to be migrated to VolaryTools - This includes the meshlet and auto LOD tooling - This is probably gonna be under an umbrella called VolaryCookUtils 110
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I was able to use my grados with it just fine (for the most part) - though I did run into a bug after I plugged it in and started streaming. Volume would just start climbing all the way up or go all the way down depending on how you tried to adjust it. Required a restart. 010
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026FWIW you can use a USB-C DAC with it. But it's not ideal without a hub. 210
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Spatial computing runtime I've been working on for a while. 010
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Another idea I have is to do some distant imposters for stuff that might not be as trivial to LOD. Which foliage actually heavily benefits from. I remember seeing something in C4 Engine a really long time ago about this - might even be worth pursuing as another 3DJ mode on top of the surfel work. 040
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026All in all the alpha is (finally) starting to shape up for Volary's rendering engine. The rest is probably gonna wait a bit more while me and my co-founder build a few test apps and get a first pass of UX together on it. We're thinking some simple widget apps written in C++ to start. 030
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026This is likely gonna be what the Vulkan backend uses. The Metal backend is likely just gonna use MTLIO, and Volary's CookTools are gonna be able to bake out both at runtime and during authoring. Authored will always be preferred over runtime. 120
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The goal for the mesh caching system is to have a DirectStorage/MTLIO style asset loading system in VolaryRender. Basically, try to get as direct to VRAM as possible. MS open sourced their GDeflate under MIT, and has provided compute shaders to decompress assets on the GPU. 110
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026LODs need to be a bit more aggressive for distant surfaces, but I like where this is going finally. Foliage is still a huge problem, but hopefully I can find a way to better merge disparate meshlets like leaves. 100
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Time for (almost fully) virtualized geometry. With auto LOD! I took some inspiration from RE Engine's approach to meshlets, and now I'm starting to get Volary's mesh caching system together. Hopefully this weekend I'll get the Vulkan and Metal backends together. 2111
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I mean- I know PiShock is planning on making a USB hub with power passthrough. So you could have a DAC and face tracker attached and still be able to charge it. 010
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Didn’t they say something about working on additional head straps and publishing things for people to make their own? 110
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026About the main three things I wish were better at this price point: - Passthrough (doesn't _have_ to be color, but it would be nice to be a bit higher rez) - Audio (it's a good bit worse than my GXR) - A second USB-C port OR a 3.5mm jack just so I can plugin better headphones (or both!) 342
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I really hope there's a bigger ecosystem for mods on this thing - if I could have another USB-C port and a bigger battery that would be peak. 161
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/202630 minute review on the Steam Frame: Audio: not great, comfort: amazing, displays: just no inky blacks, but otherwise pretty good for LCDs, controllers: pretty damn good Battery: compromises were very much made (I get longer on both my Galaxy XR and Vision Pro, but those have external packs) 1121
Geenz! @geenz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The frame on the other hand is easily one of the most comfortable standalone headsets I've ever used. Audio is meh, tracking is great (better than the GXR), displays are good for LCDs, and the controllers are once again another Valve win. 010
