Planning. I'd either ask for directions, or find the address (or as close as I could to it) on a real paper map. Most businesses posted directions, and if I was going to a house, I'd get directions from the owners, then I'd write them down or mark the place on said map.

I very briefly worked customer service phones at Cingular Wireless a long time ago, when their slogan was "Raising The Bar". They wanted us to all answer with, "Thank you for calling Cingular Wireless! How can I raise your bar today?" Absolutely not joking. You can imagine how that went.

I would not have had the composure to not say, "And if all of that *still* doesn't convince you, go drink a bottle of bleach and walk into traffic."

First Press Games have taken so long to finish the physical version of Chained Echoes I preordered that I now have a "free" copy through Playstation Plus. I placed that preorder in FEBRUARY 2023.

Yeah, Reacher S4 was... woof. Episode 7 was literally just an exposition dump. And the last two M:I movies missed the mark by a mile. I think I'll just consider the series done after Fallout.

I didn't mind the banal cult, because most cults are pretty banal, IMO.😆 Plus, I kinda like show where the bad guys are bad and unambiguously get what they deserve. The spelling things out wasn't nearly as bad as the end of Reacher S4, which is by far the worst season of the show, IMO.

KOReader's faults are no worse than Boox's stock software, and in some ways it's better. And it's always nice using software developed by folks who looked a something corporate and had the same "What the fuck? WHY?!" rections I did. 😆

After losing my Boox Go 7 I dug out the brand new Kindle Paperwhite I couldn't sell. It's still a genuinely great device, and jailbreaking it just made it SO MUCH better. KOReader has quirks, like any open-source software, but it's so much more cutomizable than the base Kindle. And faster, weirdly.

That's when I decided, finally, I'd rather have control than convenience. I'll do the harder thing to gain the ability to truly curate my experience, to tailor it to my ACTUAL needs. I get function, privacy, control, ownership, and customizability, all for the low price of a little ease.

Then, over the course of a few months, Windows pushed updates that added "features" I didn't want and was diametrically opposed to. The last straw was Microsoft full-on automatically and remotely replacing a major software suite without notification or my approval. And I couldn't roll it back.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
I was right there. Spent literal YEARS complaining about how slow/clunky/broken/annoying Windows was, all because I didn't want to take the time to simply learn something else. I wanted comfort and ease, and had failed to see it was no longer comfortable nor easy. Just *familiar*.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
We've all been trained that software should make our lives easier by doing shit *for us*, and to accept that what we want done for us is whatever the Corp decides is worth cutting into their profit margins. We've forgotton how to curate and design our experiences to our own unique needs & wants.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
We give so much away in the name of ease, even if it means accepting flaws that annoy the shit out of us or restrictions that are bald-faced cash grabs. Most of the software I use is not *easier* to use, but it's WAY more maleable, and I don't give up privacy or control to use it.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
There are a LOT of reasons I've moved in this direction, but one of the biggest - and seemingly least talked about? - is simple the ability to CUSTOMIZE SHIT. And I don't mean just finding new software. I mean *actually being able to tailor software to my needs*.

So much this. I used to be the guy who rolled my eyes at the Linux/FOSS acolytes... and now I'm running Fedora as my daily driver, jailbreaking devices to install open-source software, building and jealously guarding a physical media library, and stripping DRM from the digital stuff I buy.

Reacher isn't about Saving The World™. It's about important medium stakes at a (mostly) local level. And this particular story was about Reacher dealing with the guilt of being involved in someone's death. That's all the story needed, and this adaptation wildly missed the mark.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
I fully understand needing to update a story steeped in 70's & 80's politics to something modern (Afghanistan -> Indonesia), but nothing else was necessary. The whole chemical weapons plot was fabricated from whole cloth by insecure writers who couldn't bear the weight of an unsolved mystery.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
The book it's based on doesn't explain ANYTHING. The photo at the center of the story is a 100%, certified pure MacGuffin. We never find out why it's important, and the "reasons" given by the bad guys are all smoke and mirrors. And that was actually what made the whole book work.

Luke M. @geekelite.geekerific.com · 30/09/2026
S4 of Reacher suffers from the one fault I never thought the show would fall into: over-complicating shit. The writers, for some reason, felt the need to fucking explain Every. Last. Detail. Everything needed justification and overt reasoning. And ths show suffered for it. Badly.

An insight into the world we live in: The decision whether to spend 3 days driving to *another country* and back to retrieve my broken Boox eReader depended almost entirely on whether or not I'd put a MicroSD card in it. That's how valuable SD cards have become.

Five episodes into Neagley and I really, really like it. It reminds me of the best seasons of Reacher, but with better character dynamics. All four main characters are awesome, but Neagley herself and Keno are the standouts. Very much enjoying this show.

A little disappointed the makers of Neagley didn't take the opportunity to delete Fuckwit's name from his tower when they had the chance. Or just replaced it altogether.

A "FurReal Snuggles the Smiling Sloth" that looks roughly like a small faerie creature who has cut off a sloth's face to wear as a skin, pinning the edges of the lips into a creased expression evoking Jim Carrey as Hannibal Lecter.A close-up of the thing that will eventually murder an entire small town.
