I certainly don't think it's as simple as AI making pure slop due to the SoH example and potentially less popular projects that may have never gotten to "good enough" otherwise, but right now it seems like these projects just bring us farther from a better result than closer.

For a less popular game with fewer developers interested, it's entirely possible for them to get discouraged by an AI one that got as well praised as that. If the code base is a mess from how the AI set it up, they may not want to join the other project and just leave it entirely.

A lot of people (myself included) only recently found out that Ship of Harkinian was made through AI development, but before that, it was one that plenty of people recommended without issue. I'm glad Zelda 64 Recompiled still exists beside that, but I see that as an exception to the norm.

Just focusing on "people are happy" now completely ignores the future these leave. You agree that non-AI is preferred, so why even give the AI ones the time of day if it potentially discourages other developers?

For some people, I would imagine it's tiring to put it out for that reason instead of simply as a celebration of a game they love. If your motivation is increased by making something high quality to put against the low quality one, that's great, but it may not be that simple for others.

I don't think it's as simple as wanting a reward for being the first, it's just inherently less exciting to put out when another solution already exists. Maybe before AI multiple projects would exist with different end goals to aim for, but with this it's moreso for how the backend is set up.

The problem is these projects don't exist in vacuums, they're many times done through motivation alone that can be brought down for any number of reasons. Having something come out that works "good enough" for most people absolutely could harm a better researched project from coming out.

It was a recent update. You can change it back by typing in "about:config" in the address bar and setting "browser.nova.enabled" to "false" (not sure if any of that is different when in Japanese).

I think it helps to hear that it's pretty common. It's a shame that's being used for player retention. Ranked modes re-inforcing that stuff can sometimes make playing casual online matches tough too, but in-person feels a lot nicer when you can actually see and talk to the person you're playing.

It's made approaching that a lot less intimidating for me than fighting game ranked, though admittedly a lot of that is demons in my head caring too much about the individual matches and players behind the screen. In-game rank adjustments every match certainly doesn't help that feeling though!

The ranking system you mentioned sounds close to the way a lot of arcade rhythm games do rank: defined challenges where passing 3 specific songs in a row with certain conditions gets you a rank. This is the defined moment to test yourself, everything else can be practice or for fun.

For an arcade like that relying on newer cabinets, I could see fighting games being a little out of the way for them. Can't get a Tekken 8 cabinet, not sure how widespread the SF6 one is. A viewlix with an offline nesica would have some options.

The code also appears to apply to the save file as it would persist on restart. I had to delete my save file in order to get the screenshot of the how to play screen without the code.
