This will feature in GTA VI, a game that won't ship on a disc at launch. Satire, self-awareness and/or "the consequences of my own actions?"
Part of a frame of the GTA VI "An Extended Look" published yesterday, showing a storefront for a business named "Video Forever." It features an arched yellow facade and large windows with several "Store Closing" and "Everything Must Go" signs.

I dislike how my list of ideas for blog posts is pretty much all about the impact of LLMs on my profession... ...except for that last one, but it'd need so much visual support it's probably best as a video, and at that point it gets into "requires too much effort" territory.
Blog post ideas

- Excuses to do nothing
	- how "AI AI AI" made it worse
- Possibly more generally appealing variation on the above: how "agentic coding" has made it less valuable to share small pieces of software (anything simple enough can be custom built at the distance of a vibecoding session)
	- Tangentially, the same "agentic coding" has made Linux more amenable to a wider population, as anything that "can be fixed with a script" is now reachable by more people (with potentially less than desirable side effects, but still)
	- It also means that FOSS will suffer (even more than already known) because that "initial simple project" that sparked a bigger one (as it evolved to respond to the requirements of different users) will either not be published at all, or it will get lost in a "sea of vibecoded slop"
		- i.e. people won't look for a pre-existing solution to their small problems, they'll just prompt something anew and people will be using a thousand hyper-specialized private solutions rather than contributing to a series of fewer common solutions that solve more problems for more people
			- at the same time: this sounds like the Unix philosophy at work... except the "one thing doers" never get published, and they might not "be doing it well"
- Is it still worth it to have a projects portfolio in the age of AI? Won't it just be understood as "here's what I prompted Claude to do?" (And if yes, might there be some value in that?)
	- Note: this post is basically already written under this page https://gbl08ma.com/works/software/
- CP2077 and the out-of-bounds parkour/exploration meta-game it evokes in me
	- Robbie Legume briefly touched on this in one of his videos, how certain areas almost seem designed for this type of activity

Sadly it fails on my particular website when it tries to process a specific post. I don't know enough Rust but to me it sounds you're trying to trim a string in a naive way that Rust is not happy with?

You're right, I think it's a logged error but it still pushes. In the meantime it has developed a new error when I try to push via the web UI. When I try it on the terminal the message is more descriptive and actionable... but shouldn't this be something lichen handles itself?

Hmm, weird... when I run this test on my local machine (not the container where I have lichen-server running), it **passes**. I don't have more time to investigate now but I think I'll have to rule out DNS issues on the machine...
/// Verifies that handle resolution works for gbl08ma.com.

/// Uses gbl08ma.com which resolves via DNS TXT. Run with:
    ///   cargo test -p lichen-server --features atproto resolve_handle_gbl -- --ignored

No dice yet, new error message but it still sounds like it is attempting HTTP resolution / not ignoring the error it gets while trying HTTP resolution. I suspect this is a problem somewhere within tangled.org/ngerakines.m... but I don't know enough Rust to be able to quickly put up a repro case.

Yeah that doesn't look right. The PDS remote thingy is failing to resolve my handle to my PDS and instead is just fetching my old wordpress website at gbl08ma.com. I think it is trying to do HTTP handle resolution, but my handle is set up via DNS records.

Nothing like a good old unscheduled server downtime to make me waffle about atproto internals to uninterested non-technical users in hopes of making them understand what the "Create a rotation key" in PDS MOOver does 😭
Screenshot of Discord messages from me to someone else:

it is basically a stable identifier that is used across bluesky&co to refer to your account
it's what "holds" your followers
these identifiers are associated with a "DID document" and you can see yours here: https://plc.directory/did:plc:[REDACTED]
this "document" says what your handle is (so every time you change your handle you're actually making a change to this document) and also says what PDS your account is hosted on (so when you migrate your account from one PDS to another, you're also making a change to this document)
to update this document, you need a "private key" for one of the "public keys" configured in the DID document (think of the "private key" as an actual 🔑 and the "public key" as the 🔒 it fits into. everyone is able to see the lock on your door, but you must keep your 🔑 to yourself)
in order to let you change handle, the PDS (in this case, my PDS) has one of the keys to your DID document
by adding a second key that you have, you are later able to change this document yourself without intervention of my PDS (e.g. because it went offline for good and I'm gone)
and this would allow you to keep your did:plc:[REDACTED] and thus all your followers, and all the other "social relationships" that "point to you"
without adding a second key, if my PDS disappears, you won't have the 🔑 for the single 🔒 that is currently in your DID document
by adding a second key, you are adding a second 🚪 with its own 🔒 and its own 🔑 so you can get back home even if my PDS loses the 🔑 to the existing single 🚪
if you go here https://plc.directory/did:plc:[REDACTED]/log/audit - or for a nicer view, click on the Logs tab in pdsls

you'll be able to see all the changes you've made (or which your PDS has made for you) to your identity document
you can see when you added a custom handle

Screenshot of messages I'm sending to someone else on Discord:

this is a theme you'll see, as you know, throughout the linux userspace ecosystem
did you know arch has its own d-bus implementation
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/D-Bus#dbus-broker
this will forever be the thing I love about linux and the thing that makes it a nightmare for people who want things to just work
you can't exactly replace, say, the registry in windows with a different implementation
meanwhile on linux there are like 10 different, from-slightly-to-very-incompatible, notions and implementations of what "the registry" should be
as a software developer, you should pick the one you like the most/are most familiar with
and then spend the time you'd take to support the other N-1 implementations arguing with people online about why the solution you chose to support is superior
or at the very least, arguing about why linux is superior to windows
this all used to be a joke
the fact that it is becoming less of a joke by necessity is all due to microsoft deciding to not care about the consumer desktop
or at the very least deciding to care about the wrong metrics (like AI adoption, monthly subscriptions to cloud services, etc.)

Not only does the official did:plc server implementation not check this, there are operations in the PLC that have duplicated keys, so I'll have to remove this check. The did:plc spec is "great": there are things it doesn't specify, and some of the things it specifies are not actually enforced.
Screenshot of Go code that checks for duplicate rotation keys in PLC operations, with a highlighted comment saying "the typescript implementation doesn't appear to check this at first sight, but the spec says "must include least 1 key and at most 5 keys, with no duplication""

On the did:plc front, I've been toying around with some ideas that are likely to be controversial. Some of the reasons will probably be valid, but I bet there is mostly going to be a lot of knee-jerking going around. Maybe it won't matter: I might never get this to a state I'm happy publishing.

And, once again, a good time to bring this back from the archive: (via www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/red-... - dated October 2018. Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020)
Dan Houser is "thankful" he’s not releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 in the age of Trump. “It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did,” says the co-founder of Rockstar Games. "Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast."

My haul this #BandcampFriday (links in thread) This feels like an achievement when it should just be a transaction - Bandcamp is going through severe technical issues... if they don't extend this Bandcamp Friday it's a bad look, lots of artists see a significant uptick in sales during these events.

Sending email is easy, why do you ask?
Screenshot of portions of multiple files including a docker compose spec showing a comment "Fix the great woes of this VPS not being able to use Mailgun for some reason (October 3 2025 - see Discord conversation" followed by an extra hosts file definition "fake-host-see-also-the-systemd-tunnel-unit.mailgun.org:172.17.0.1", then another file showing PDS_EMAIL_SMTP_URL being set pointing to the fake host, and finally a systemd unit definition which corresponds to a autossh tunnel to a different server to proxy access to Mailgun's SMTPS ingest.

A decade ago, I cut my teeth in the world of embedded systems by making software for the graphic calculator I used in high school. I made the mistake of including an email address in the about screens, and despite recent disclaimers (read gbl08ma.com/casio-prizm-...) I still receive gems like this:
Screenshot of email
Subject: Help for Add in
Contents (verbatim):
Hi George Weigt,
I'm an Italian student from Italy.
I love your prizm add-ins, they are very useful but now I have to make one that easily hides the "useful" adds in. My plan is this one: when I open the fake settings or periodic or something else add in I can press on one unexplicit key that's going to open the secret add in (as khicas). But I don't really know where I can start from.
I hope for your help
Reg

@baileytownsend.dev do you know why it says "no description available" in the preview? I see it's also doing that for some other repos it has posted. Isn't this meant to be this description?
Screenshot of tangled.org UI showing the repo description as "A Bluesky labeler that labels accounts hosted on PDSes that aren't operated by Bluesky PBC"

Yeah, this is definitely not the certification path I see for my websites behind Cloudflare. This one involves SSL.com and my websites involve Google Trust Services. Possibly related? www.reddit.com/r/CloudFlare... (especially that comment about the undocumented endpoint)

Update: we're closer to a root cause (repro'd on my local machine). The cert is green in Firefox and curl didn't complain either, so the next step is to find out how bun deals with certs and why it doesn't like it. BTW: I think I heard something about running PDS behind CF not being a good idea.

Ah yeah, I was going to save this for tomorrow's s̵e̵l̵f̵-̵p̵r̵o̵m̵o̵t̵i̵o̵n̵ status update, but I might just share it now instead:

Now that I'm trying to build one I can definitely see how they can be quite fiddly :( The good news is that I might have something working soon. Only bigger PDSs will have dedicated labels. Smaller ones get the "Other PDS" label instead. The "Independent PDS" label is applied to everyone on one.

Making an actual effort at trying out Bitwig to see if I can leave Windows & Ableton behind in peace (and yes I know this is 5.x and 6 will be much better). 1. Chat, are we cooking? 2. What genre is this even? lol (I swear every new project I make, a different one comes out. I'm such a noob)

Cookie Clicker has it set to a whopping 93 GB despite never using more than a few KB, lol steamdb.info/app/1454400/...

It's alive... but the screen is even more broken than I remember (the top 40% of the screen used to work fine, with some flickering). I think Rockbox supports having narration in the menus, so maybe I could pretend this is now an iPod Shuffle and use it like that...

A smaller haul this #BandcampFriday (I've been busy, no time to find music). I don't even have to put the links in the alt text this time: - noisy.bandcamp.com/track/all-of-u - aedis-syopeen.bandcamp.com/album/megate... - worldwidewolf.bandcamp.com/album/caller... - sanxion7.com/album/grotes...

My haul this #BandcampFriday Links to each album/track in the alt text, if nothing messes them up. By the way, if I were to spend this much every other month, it'd still be cheaper than a Spotify subscription - and I get to choose who actually gets the money.

But for real, I knew I'm not cut out for mastering when I realized that I can listen to other people's masters like this and say they're still fine. Granted, usually only clean mixes can be pushed this hard... turns out the mixing part is kinda important.
StandardCLIP pushing up a DeBisco song by 4 dB, achieving -2.6 LUFS - but at what cost (not pictured: dumb-and-deaf me saying it still sounds fine)

Clean mixdown? Sounds like too much work. I shall continue with my super busy mixes, placing a soft clipper on the master with the gain and saturation turned up to the moon, and pretending the distortion is an intentional artistic choice. It's not like I can hear you over this earrape anyway 🙉
"How To Draw an Owl" meme but it's "how to master for loudness": 1.(circles) clipper and limiter 2. (the rest of the fucking owl) with a clean mixdown going into them

I started playing the latest GTA V re-release and soon after I got the feeling that something sounded off. I'm a bit ashamed that it took reading online that the music was in mono for me to realize that's what's wrong. In any case, thanks Rockstar for yet another shitposting opportunity:
My Steam review of Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced (Not Recommended):

Eleven and a half years after the original release, this fifth re-release of GTA V takes us back to the 1960s. Back then, according to photographic evidence from the era, life was already in color, with very realistic light propagation that enabled reflections and shadows just like the ones we see today. However, radio was broadcasted in mono - a constraint faithfully reproduced in this new edition. Back then, there were no such things as "texting" or "instant messaging", but there was the telegraph and the telephone - technologies that Rockstar invites players to learn, in order to effectively communicate with other players in this new edition.

After transforming the concepts for the scrapped single-player DLCs into GTA Online content, Rockstar is once again showcasing their ability to take abandoned concepts of theirs and put a new spin on them: this throwback to the limitations of decades past must be a genius adaptation of their ideas for their Cold War, espionage-themed game Agent, which they teased in 2007 and eventually abandoned.

I can confirm that this edition of GTA V is effectively "Enhanced" in its ability to throw us back to the past - by making us take yet another look at a decade-old game, by having us do so while dealing with the technological constraints of decades prior, and even by reminding us of things like online character migrations - could the latter also present a hint as to what's to come in future installments of this series?

legitrant appears to be infested with fake reCaptcha malware (www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/securit...) that isn't getting blocked by uBO. Where did you even get that link from?
