For comparison, here's how my openlocal.uk data explorer organises far more complex data queries in production. This is a much more contested space with around 60 filters & over 100 columns. I make this a little more accessible by using […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

This is amazing to me. Not the eclipse itself. I don't tend to stand in awe of the universe. More that millions of people are going to go out with their little plastic spectacles and stare at the sun. We live in a period when there feels like so much outright […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

Hopsauna UI prototype showing the information card a buyer sees when reviewing a conditional purchase option. It shows how many more items need buyers to commit to buying before the condition will be met, and the date when the offer ends. A checkout flow showing the payment step. There are two products to two sellers. Each indicated separated with their delivery and payment fees indicated.

There's no Amazon-style grouping or bulk sending. Each payment is independent, and fulfilment - similarly - would be the responsibility of each seller.

The payment provider fee is indicated, and the buyer has the option of covering that for the seller if they wish.Payment itself triggers two payment flows. Yes, if you buy products from two different sellers, the checkout basket is a UI convenience. Paying direct means paying to as many sellers as you have selected.

Two buttons shown, and each initiates that sellers Payment flow.

A UI prototype landing page, with sections for:
- Aboutness: a description of the site
- Featured creator: a followable actor, plus a list of featured products they created
- A list of new product arrivals, also AP actors
- An activity feed from the instance

Firstly, yes, prepare for lots of hop and beer puns. Secondly, demonstrating a few approaches:
- No "infinite feed", you have to click for further items
- It "looks" like a social site, but it isn't, so a feed isn't the reason to be there, although you can view updates from posts in a "stream".
- I'm going to experiment with a context-sensitive middle icon slot on the bottom menu bar. So, add something to a basket and the "home" changes to "basket".

I sat in that NG Kerk with the dominee, the official church of Apartheid which helped put a religious foundation under racism, & I thought of the cultural wave shortly to arrive in his small town, & which has changed the fortunes of that part of the Karoo, & I said, "Funny you should say that."

My theory of the wire windpump is this: if there isn't a group of informal traders by the roadside at the town entrance selling wire craft windpumps, then that town isn't a tourism destination. There were none in Barrydale. I met with community & business […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

I added it to my research, & went to the Karoo. It's a dramatic & magnificent part of the country, all stone & sky. Barrydale itself, back then, was only famous for Ronnie's Sex Shop (not a sex shop), but is a green oasis amongst the red brown rock. Quiet […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
Photo from Barrydale's tourism office.

Exterior photo of Ronnies Sex Shop. It's a perfectly ordinary (and unremarkable) roadside tavern. Square, blocky, white-painted, with the name in red letters, and "sex" seemingly painted randomly on the wall next to the name "Ronnies Shop". Wooden tables are outside to the one side, motorbikes parked in front.

Legend has it that, many decades ago, a regular decided to paint the word "sex" alongside "Ronnies", and that caused multiple drivers, travelling through the remoteness of the Karoo, to stop and take a second look. Out of such stories, tourism legends grow, and it soon made it to the Lonely Planet as a spot to visit. Tourists from all over the world stop, have a drink, are somewhat disappointed and mystified, and move on.

My bank emailed me asking for information, but providing no way for me to send it to them. So I tried their help chat in the app. But it's an "AI" which gives me wrong answers only. When I complain, it says "Transferring you to an agent", but doesn't transfer me anywhere.
Chat screenshot with my bank "AI":

"AI": If this isn't quite what you were looking for, please rephrase your question and I'll try my best to get you what you need.

Me: Just reproving that "AI" is incapable.

Fifty years after Trump's catastrophic Canadian campaign in the winter of 2025, noted French cartographer and engineer, Charles Minard, produced the definitive chart revealing the tragic and disastrous losses of the American military advance and retreat.
Figurative Map of the successive losses in men of the American Army in the Canadian campaign 2025-2026. Drawn by M. Minard, Inspector General of Bridges and Roads (retired). Paris, November 20, 2079. The numbers of men present are represented by the widths of the colored zones at a rate of one millimeter for every ten thousand men; they are further written across the zones. The red designates the men who enter Canada, the black those who leave it. — The information which has served to draw up the map has been extracted from the works of M. M. Thiers, de Ségur, de Fezensac, de Chambray and the unpublished diary of Jacob, the pharmacist of the Army since October 28th. In order to better judge with the eye the diminution of the army, I have assumed that the troops of Prince Jérôme and of Marshal Davout, who had been detached at Vancouver and Calgary and have rejoined near Orsha and Vitebsk, had always marched with the army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Joseph_Minard
