If she died with less rights than she fought for and won, then much of that is a consequence of her own role in such a horrific, racist, and elitist organisation. 3/3 Read more here: uscpublicdiplomacy.org/blog/feminis...

When exposed as a CIA operative in 1967, Steinem confirmed her role to The New York Times without apology, claiming the CIA is “liberal, nonviolent, and honorable” and that she would do it again. The CIA is one of the most violent organisations in the history of the world. 2/3

Gloria Steinem was a CIA asset who was tasked with subverting the feminist movement away from class-based analysis. She founded the Independent Research Service that was funded by the CIA to spread anti-communist propaganda at youth festivals abroad. 1/3

Going on holiday tomorrow. Suffered a bit of burnout last week and while the weekend seemed to sort me out, a few days in the sunshine with copious amounts of cocktails will do me the world of good. Had some good news with work after the graft so seems a good time for it. 🍸

Apparently this has been selling quite fast, and according to Darren, not many tickets are left, so thank you for showing an interest. I look forward to seeing you there. I'll be on the 14th but the whole series looks great. Link below! www.edfringe.com/tickets/what...

I must admit, there was something quite empowering about going back to a place where my Great Great Granda worked, now as a Dr. We're not servants anymore, Granda – well perhaps we still are to some degree. But we certainly ain't waiting on that class like we used to. Up eh workers!

This book that Stevie gave us a wee shot of even speaks about some of the family and what they were doing in the place during the war. Much of the place is dedicated to that now, but really interesting. Like a walk into history.

Very kind of him as the place was closing, so I never had a chance to go inside the quarters. However, the house were the family lived is in on the last post of the thread (all done up now as you'll see with the windows etc., but that's where they were lived, about 15 of them).

Stevie who works there was a tremendous help and despite it being over 100 years ago knew the family, and many of my distant relatives who still live there today. He's gave me some details so looking forward to following them up.

Visited Fermanagh and Milltown today, the latter of which my great great grandfather was a servant (professional name "coachman", so drove Edward Archdale around, as did the rest of our family at that time) at the Archdale Castle.

It didn't affect Lowe's class – they benefitted from it. So, the issue is not only firearms after Dunblane – this is revisionist. It is the longer history of class antagonism written into property law, rural law, criminal law, and the political imagination of 'freedom'.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
the same classes who benefitted from the previous laws suddenly rediscover the language of 'liberty'. Because the fact is, it was never a universal freedom. For most of British history, the aforementioned laws organised land, property, and access to means of survival.

Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
The hunger and natural anger from the poor at this obvious injustice was then reconfigured as 'disorder' – how dare they disrupt ruling-class 'tradition'. So when these modern gun laws constrain bourgeois culture, it's funny because...
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
For centuries, the poor were restricted from hunting because game, land, and guns were treated as privileges of the landed classes. The poor were then criminalised for taking what these people preserved for sport.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
As P. B. Munsche shows in 'Gentlemen and Poachers', the game laws imposed property qualifications that reserved hunting and firearm possession for country gentlemen, while poachers and the poor faced fines, imprisonment, and even torture. So there's an obvious contradiction here.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
It started with people separated from the same means and practices they had survived on for millenia. The Game Act 1671, Black Act 1723, Night Poaching Act 1828 and the Game Act 1831 then further protected the landed classes’ control over animals and land.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
Ultimately, this was the making of the working class. Once the common access to land was removed, the poor were pushed into wage dependency, and into factories and cities. Marx called this 'so-called primitive accumulation' as capitalism did not begin with 'free and equal exchange'

Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
Neither the General Enclosure Act 1801 and Inclosure Consolidation Act 1845 were new in practice either. They merely legitimised older practices, where land rights, grazing, gathering, fuel collection, and subsistence were essentially fenced or abolished.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
For centuries, access to land, game, and weapons have been structured through the class system. From the Statute of Merton 1235 and Statute of Westminster 1285, through Enclosure and Inclosure Acts, the commons were converted into private property.

Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
In suggesting gun control has made it difficult to hunt, Lowe also presents hunting as if it were once a general freedom, only recently interrupted by modern regulation – a selective history.

Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
To discuss this atrocity as if it was an inconvenience to sporting culture is morally repugnant on its own – but it's what we expect from his class. But there is an even deeper historical implication here.
100
Gavin Brewis @gavinbrewis.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
"They are trying to make hunting difficult because of one murder" First, just to get it right, Dunblane was not “one murder”. It was the murder of sixteen children, their teacher, alongside fifteen others who were seriously wounded...

A weapon for the morally-righteous petit bourgeoisie - those of the comfortable classes who piss down on what they perceive as the lumpen from their ivory towers of self-appointed superiority. Ignorance is bliss.

A term used only to describe the poor and young white working-class (they use thug, hooligan or simply the race of the individual as the punch when they are non-white). Like those other words and their usages though, it is nothing more than the ideological punishment of the poor via buzzword...

Interesting to see a return of the term "Ned" to mainstream media in the last couple of years. That's a few times now that journalists have felt comfortable throwing around the label, thinking not about the implications, let alone caring about them.🧵 www.heraldscotland.com/news/2625367...

Seeing people of colour, many I assume to be students, with all bags and suitcases like they are leaving town. So desperate to tell them you and many others support them, but also not wanting to approach people at a time of heightened panic and fear. Really horrible stuff.

Belfast in an eerie state. Everything closed. The vast majority of buses stopped. Also seen the media cutting about taking photos of smashed windows (which have been smashed for a while now). Asked them about it and got pied. Stoking panic.

And special mention to @graemearmstrong.bsky.social and his new book Raveheart. Goosebumps reading this which I find is rare. Particularly special though is seeing your name and old tunes in there which feels like a lifetime ago. Which is sad that it's over, but special in that it happened.
