Recently, while troubleshooting a PATH issue, I noticed an entry for /pkg/env/global/bin. At first, I worried that something had gone horribly wrong. Turns out, this is part of macOS 27.0… though no one is sure what it’s for yet.

Over the weekend, John Gruber posted a piece titled “X Once Again Marks the Spot”. He announced this on Mastodon by saying “I’m sure this one won’t make anyone angry.” I’m not angry, John, I’m just so very tired.

After using the same few image formats for 20+ years, I’m now on the WebP bandwagon. That isn’t something I thought I’d ever say. Now I’m wondering how soon it’ll be before I can use a couple more.

After living with Apple’s 27.0 OSs since launch, I have some more annoyances to get off my chest. This time, it’s all about how tabs and menus have gotten worse.

I really enjoy John Gruber’s podcast The Talk Show. However, I’ve noticed that it’s been a while since it was in my feed. I decided to chart previous episode dates to check some of my assumptions about release frequency.

I mostly use my web stats service because I get a lizard-brain kick from watching numbers go up, but it also provides some fun insights. For example, it’s how I found out about bubbles.town.

Something (slightly) less boring than nothing.

I’ve been noticing a lot of service outages lately. Some with few enough nines that you’d think they were going for a low score. My guess: this is probably going to get worse before it gets better, but maybe not for the reasons you’d think.

Yesterday, Claude Code disappeared from the $20/month subscription tier on Anthropic’s website. Well, for some people. Then it came back. As Simon Willison put it, it’s all very confusing.

Yesterday, Tim Cook announced his timeline for stepping down as Apple’s CEO . I felt like I should write something about this, but I wasn’t sure what. I fell back into thinking about Cook’s time by the numbers.

I live in a weird place. Happily, it’s often a good type of weird. Sadly, it’s also a place where, in general, motorists aren’t very concerned with things like “obeying laws” or “not hitting people”.

I’ve been reading (slowly) David Pogue’s Apple: The First 50 Years, and really enjoying it. I’ve previously read quite a few books about Apple’s history, but Pogue has put together something really special with this one.

Apple recently updated all their OSs to 26.4, and there were plenty of Liquid Glass updates. Most of them of the better! Here are some of the changes that stood out to me, as well as a bit more grumbling about Liquid Glass in general (sorry).
