Spot on summary by SurferToday.com of our recent study: The waves are not channeled by the Nazaré Canyon: they are focused by the northern edge, and in particular the shape of the edge is important for the focusing. Pre-print is available here: egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20... 🌊

Last week we put out wave buoys measuring both current and wave height in Moskstraumen, one of the strongest tidal currents exposed ot the open ocean. The buoys were put out across the current between Moskenesøya og Mosken. github.com/gauteh/sfy 🌊🧪

🌊🧪 @met.no

The WOOP26 workshop in Finse is over! Friends and colleagues from Europe and the US joined us to figure out where to go on wave measurements in the future, also taking time for a bit of skiing and more philosophical discussions on how we should study waves. Thanks!

But, having a compression format with index so that it's not necessary to pick particular chunking would be nice.

Sorry, I guess I was just being difficult. When reading big datasets for geoscience, decoding is the bottleneck. And most libraries like hdf5 and netcdf are single threaded, preventing fast reads. Indexing chunks speeds things up.

A satellite image from Google Earth shows how this looks in practice. Here the waves are a bit shorter.. Interesting how the relatively random waves outside the harbor are filtered into almost monochromatic waves as they enter. The boats have figured out where the shadow zone is.

The old Alexandrian port started started construction in 1900 BC. It has two openings, allowing ships, and waves, to enter. Here 8 s waves are simulated as they enter the harbor using a BEM-model (github.com/gauteh/ohbemn), creating a beautiful interference pattern 🌊 🧪.

COVID-19 vaccines save lives, but evidence is mounting that vaccines also protect against heart disease. A study in Nature Communications again shows lower rates of heart attacks and strokes after the first dose. Infections increase those risks. RFK Jr is a prat. 🧪🩺 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Roaring takes a different approach, checking any pixel that intersect land against the original shapes. So you get the same resolution as the original shapes.
