NYU Courant professor Tristan Buckmaster, of Navier-Stokes drama fame, gave a talk at the new NYU Mathematics in the Age of AI seminar series. It was... popular.

Over 100 years ago, steam engines were not welcomed by firefighters, who felt it would change what it meant to be a firefighter and it would result in job loss.

To spell some of it out: - The colleagues are kind & brilliant - The students are exceptional, 2nd to no other school - Minimal BS in the way of research Cons: - cold - canadian geese are scary (but cute) If you want to do world-class research, look no further than UWaterloo CS

Today's my last day at @uwcheritoncs.bsky.social, before I go on leave. I applied to 30+ faculty positions in Fall 2017. 3 interviewed me, only 1 offer. I'm deeply grateful that Waterloo CS alone saw potential here. I'm sad to be leaving and I will remain its loudest advocate.

The Best Student Paper at COLT is named after Mark Fulk. I didn't know much about him, and information seemed scant online. Kaave Hosseini gathered information and wrote this short profile about him for University of Rochester CS. www.cs.rochester.edu/about/excell...
Mark Fulk died on May 18, 1997. Mark did his PhD work under Professor John Case at the University at Buffalo, graduating in 1985. Mark was a computer science faculty member at the University of Rochester from 1986 to 1993, after which he left to become a consultant at Genesee Valley Software company. He was the thesis advisor for two distinguished URCS PhD students, the late Laura Sanchez (who was a professor of computer science at Colgate University) and Sanjay Jain (who is a professor of computer science at the National University of Singapore).

Mark, an expert in inductive inference (recursion-theoretic learning theory), was praised at the department for his devotion to research, his enthusiasm, and his kindness to all. He was also a wonderful raconteur.

Mark is well known for several impressive results in inductive inference. Among his important contributions are:

Refuting Barzdin's conjecture that every robustly learnable class is recursively enumerable
Showing that prudence and reorder independence are not restrictive for explanatory learning
Showing the nonexistence of maximal identifiable classes
Introducing several interesting criteria of learning, such as inductive approximation, which is inspired by the scientific method, even if one may never reach a "perfect" model, at least reaching increasingly good models.
The best student paper award at the COLT (Conference on Learning Theory)—a conference that was held in Rochester in 1990 with him as the conference chair—is named in Mark's honor, reflecting his lasting influence on the field.

Obviously this doesn't scale, but I chose to send this junior researcher a (hopefully polite) email with some of my thoughts (written hastily in 30 minutes, not polished). More practicing mathematicians & researchers should advocate for the culture they want, so here's my bit.

Curious how many people actually submit more than 20 papers, so I explored #ICLR2026 data (took at 30 mins w codex). 101 people had over 20 submissions (max 54), contributing 2226 papers (11.2% of 19,814 submissions). Capping them would block at least 500 papers (2.5% total).

Some are understandably upset by the latter policy. Those on the other side may get it. TMLR submissions have 4x'd, largely fueled by single authors who have no prev ML papers. Sadly, due to AI, a (short-term?) downstream effect will be additional gatekeeping and credentialism.

ICLR 2027 has authorship quotas: - No more than 20 submissions per author - No more than 1 submission where no author has a paper previously accepted to a major ML conference From iclr.cc/Conferences/...

I haven't been to UCalgary in nearly twenty years. (I feel very old saying that.) I last came for the Shad Valley program in 2007. For nostalgia sake, I'm staying in the same dorm (Rundle Hall) that I did back then.

Taylor Swift really needs to be more thoughtful about scheduling around ML conferences. First her Eras Tour finale clashed with #NeurIPS2024. And now her wedding conflicts with the start of #ICML2026? No regrets about turning down the wedding invite. See you soon in Seoul!

Lots more in the paper: how does DPO fit into the picture? What if attackers have different goals? etc. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2606.04929 Code: github.com/jcksanderson... Led by Jack Sanderson (jcksanderson.com), w/ Yihan Wang, Xiaoqian Lu, co-supervised w/ Yiwei Lu

So far, it seems like the system is shockingly robust, right? Unfortunately, this is an illusion. First row reconfirms [RT24]: with no SFT poison, it's very hard to poison the PPO'd model (needs >5% poison). But, with just a little SFT poison (0.5%), attack succeeds w/ 3%. 5/n
210
Gautam Kamath @gautamkamath.com · 05/06/2026
What about poisoning PPO? A remarkable paper of @javirandor.com and @floriantramer.bsky.social (arxiv.org/abs/2311.14455) shows that just 0.5% poison is enough to break a reward model (L)! Again, fear not: somehow, it takes a (high) 5% poisoning before it transfers to the RLHF'd model (R). 4/n
210
Gautam Kamath @gautamkamath.com · 05/06/2026
There's multiple post-training phases attackers can infiltrate: SFT, DPO, PPO. Let's start with SFT. With just 2% SFT poisoning, 90% attack success (L)! But not to worry, RLHF works as we hope (?): it wipes away the poison. An RM scores outputs just like a clean model (R). 3/n

Gautam Kamath @gautamkamath.com · 05/06/2026
🧵Feeling safe against data poisoning in post-training? Think again! Individual components of LLM post-training pipelines are surprisingly robust to data poisoning attacks. In work led by Jack Sanderson (co-advised w Yiwei Lu), we show they crumble when attacked together. 1/n

"People submit too many papers to ML conferences" Meanwhile, at IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications: "You may not submit more than 36 papers per year." Apparently this is a new policy. I would be super curious to see the stats on how many people are submitting more.

These tasks are hard/impossible to zero-shot, rather easy without privacy, but surprisingly hard even with large privacy budgets (ε = 100)! This room to grow means we can really measure progress made by new DP synthetic data benchmarks. 6/n
