I’d argue that Pet Sounds itself didn’t become famous until the 1990s. I mean, it took it eight years to sell 500,000 copies, attaining Gold record status only in 1974. But there’s a lot of revisionist history on the internet… and not enough people with first-hand, long memories. ;)

At 17, I hitchhiked from my hometown to LA... so many miles... Took me a month and a half or so. Here's my actual route (the way there in red, the return in green) compared to the quickest way. Skirting Lake Superior was quite hellish. I've relatives in Northern Alberta, hence the big detour. 👍

I second (and commend) your friend's taste. A few years ago, I wanted to watch a series from the golden age of TV westerns, and this was my pick. It's not particularly stage-bound, and it has to be the most progressive of the lot, in no small part thanks to Gene Roddenberry's contribution.
