This. I still have editors say that they are not interested in writer+artist books, they only want cartoonists (in part because it’s perceived as more Artistic / Valid, but also in part because it’s cheaper for the editor)

Yeah, I did a short comic many years ago that played on a similar idea. Showing the “final” battle between a hero and their nemesis. Revealing it was the villain who survived the encounter and was now just living out a normal life in secret.

Gary Moloney @garymoloney.bsky.social · 15h
100%. This is what I mean by being redeemed but unforgiven (where the choice was theirs to turn away from that life). It’s the foundation for a lot of modern westerns after all. The villain who is stopped by an external force and doesn’t return to villainy (or is unable to) is an interesting one.

Gary Moloney @garymoloney.bsky.social · 16h
It’s the reason many “redemption” stories end with a heroic sacrifice because you don’t have to deal with the legacy of that character’s sins; their death absolves them in the story’s eyes. The more interesting story is often when they are “redeemed” but unforgiven. Learning to live with the past.

Gary Moloney @garymoloney.bsky.social · 16h
Look, I love a good redemption story as much as anyone. Part of the problem with many of them is that it feels unearned in the lead-up or unreckoned with in aftermath. Too many end with the babyface turn rather than exploring what redemption really means. Death becomes a convenient story tool.

Two devilish lesbians do the polka in a burning, stormy, hellscape. They are both wearing 19th century fancy dress costumes featuring devilish motifs. The figure on the left has grey skin, black curled hair and gold-ram like horns. A tiny imp is sat among flames on her head. The devil on the right has pinkish red skin and white hair swept up; her gold horns are thin and curl back from her forehead. Their pointed tails are crossed over each other. The border is inspired by medieval doom paintings & features people burning in a Hellmouth, demons, angels & demonic sigils.
An illustration of Francesca & Michaela from Bridgerton. They are walking with their arms around each other's waists, their free arms held above their heads pulling with them the sky in the form of a great length of cloth that is folding around them. Michaela is a Black woman with tight curls in an updo; her simple empire line dress is forest green & she has green drop earrings. Francesca is a white woman in a blue dress, with part of her light brown hair held up in a bun, the rest in a large ringlets. The background is an abstractly rendered Highland landscape in coloured pencils. The border is an aerial view of trees rendered the same.A black and white ink drawing of the overgrown ruins at Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. A male couple is standing within, their backs to us and embracing in a quiet moment together. An illustration for a bookmark of a wyrm, coiled upon itself in an Anglo-Saxon and Norse inspired style with bright colours upon a black background. And it’s such a relatable thing too. We all on some level want to show each other kindness and often the hardest thing to not have that returned. Do you let that change who you are? Does the hero? (I always think of the below page from Shattered Grid which nails it in a very economical way)

Gary Moloney @garymoloney.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
One of the most compelling and tragic things for a hero to reckon with is villain who cannot or does not want to be saved. To offer their hand and have it rebuked. Equally interesting is the otherwise kind hero who is themselves unable to offer their hand because their villain lives up to the name.
