A current work in progress, to be released in 2027. If all seven words next week could be "whiskey", I can probably participate all week with any single book. In some cases, maybe a chapter.

This series has a lot of teeth in it. Possibly a diagnosable amount.
"Your intentions don't matter at
all to them," she took my flask and
poured herself another generous drink,
"You offended Themselves and they
keep score."
"I suppose it's too late to tell you
I don't believe in Pucas?" I asked, "Are
you going to tell me that the Easter
bunny and the tooth fairy are real, too?"
"Tooth fairies are very real," she
replied, "though they are poorly named.
They collect the teeth of human children
which are offered to them because it's
easy, but in fact they prefer just about
any bone from a living adult human."
"I hate everything you've just
said," I took another drink from my
flask, "and I'm going to not believe it
anyway."
"Your beliefs," she shrugged,
"like all beliefs, have no impact on your
reality."

Sometimes I like to put true stories in my novels.
When you spend a few years dreading your
pillow it takes a while to break the habit, apparently.
This doesn't mean I don't ever sleep; it just takes a
certain alignment of stars to make it feel organic as
opposed to by prescription.
The standard paranormal investigation is hours
and hours of waiting and recording audio and video in
dark places. I have fallen asleep in dark attics and
basements, crawlspaces used by serial killers, and in
graveyards and crypts.
One time, I took a nap in the collapsed opening
of a burial cairn in Scotland. The history tour group I
was with was scandalized and I ate lunch alone until I
got off the train again in London almost a week later. The cover for Whispers in the Crescent City -- A confused man in St Louis #1 cemetery.

At the end of the bar, the only
non-travelers were clustered together,
wearing worn jeans and clunky work
boots and topped off with flannel shirts
in an earth-toned rainbow of bland plaid.
Since lumberjack cosplay isn't a
thing, I surreptitiously looked a little bit
closer.
The work boots were high-
quality leather, soft and certainly not
steel toed. The scuffs on them were
artfully placed, and I suspected they
walked out of a mall in that condition.
The jeans were distressed but
distressed raw denim has a look that
casual wear or working conditions don't
replicate. These were jeans that would
last a hundred years without showing
actual wear, so any fraying or light spots
had to be applied artificially.
And the flannel? I recognized the
brand. I'm a bit of a flannel aficionado.
This wasn't the type of shirt one would
wear to chop wood or, I don't know,
homestead something. These were
flannel shirts built to double as office
wear. They have a collar, buttons and
long sleeves so ignore the lack of starch
and accept the shirt as just the right side
of casual Friday because this shirt says
I'm here to do some actual work and I'11
coast on what credibility I've managed
to earn so far, thanks.

Going live in 2027:
Meanwhile, I had a concussion fluttering around behind my eyes, my back felt like
someone had tried to unzip me with gardening tools, and there was still a Hollow Walker
somewhere in the canyon acting like my continued existence was a personal insult. So
obviously this was the perfect time to go looking for a weapon.

Lydia had said the ash was evidence, not a rule. Evidence was all I had. What I did have was
a pocketknife, a brass bell, some rusty nails, assorted witch-adjacent nonsense in jars and
baggies, and the kind of confidence usually associated with men trying to deep-fry turkeys
without reading the instructions first. That's great for a YouTube video but terrible for your homeowner's insurance. The cover for Rattling Chimes of the Sandia Mountains by Garrick Blake.

For as much as they resemble crows,
grackles are unrelated, having lighter and
more iridescent feathers in the proper
lighting and if they happen to be free of the
coating of bus exhaust that they tend to pick
up living in the city. Like we all do.
Austin does have crows. The
suburbs have encroached on the historical
farmland where they live, and they've been
encroaching back. They eat the eggs from
backyard hipster chicken coops and have
switched from stealing corn from a farmer's
field to stealing corn chips from food
bloggers.
Austin also has a recovering
population of ravens, or, as the locals call
them, "giant angry crows". They are one of
the only birds, or animal of any kind,
including humans, willing to take on a
Canadian goose while also being sober. And
they are big, so while they undoubtedly
grab the occasional unattended nacho, they
also famously make off with spare change,
wedding rings and key fobs right off the
valet podium. If it's shiny, it is to be
coveted. Ravens are like people in that way.

You know, standard stuff for a

My ultimate destination was the
penthouse-level restaurant on top of a
twenty-something-story building built in
the 1930's. The manager had contacted
me about late night disturbances in the
dining area. Shattered light bulbs and
scattered flatware, broken plates and
glasses and framed photos flung off the
walls.

haunted place. And low stakes enough
for me to take this casual stroll through
the underground on the way.
From the photos I had been sent,
the decor was exactly what you'd expect
if the company had more respect for
history than current trends in fine dining.
Fireplaces and dark wood paneling
dotted with framed art of fancy men
hunting foxes and tall shelves of books
no one had opened in decades. It was the
kind of space where cold cucumber soup
and finger sandwiches somehow count as
food and make sense.

No "adept" but I had "skill" which I then stretched to "skillset" because it's the weekend and I wanted to.
The cover for Murmurs of the River of No Return by Garrick Blake.I worried that if I died, I
would be condemned to haunt these
woods forever. Or, worse, I'd have
one of those ghost jobs like
unfinished business or explaining the
true meaning of Christmas to some
miserly capitalist.
If ending up as a ghost was
my fate, I wanted to just hang out in
my room and moan miserably for
eternity. I feel like I've earned that
right. I've certainly developed the
skillset.

From Echoes of Austin:
We could see a woman with dark
hair in a white dress thrashing around and
continuing to scream below us. But she
wasn't in the water.
She was easily a dozen feet above
the current water level of the Trinity, and
she passed under the bridge and down the
river, still flailing and shrieking and floating
in midair as she went out of sight around the
curve of the river.
Was she possibly buried in that little
cemetery down the road? Had she drowned
during some flood years and years ago?
We just knew she wasn't alive and
that we couldn't have helped her. And
getting closer to her wasn't something either
of us had felt like doing.
We went back to the car and drove
home and never spoke of our trip to that
bridge again.
Graduation happened a few months
later and we found fewer and fewer things
to speak about before we both left for
separate colleges and never spoke again.
Like I said, teenagers do dumb
things. The cover for Echoes of Austin by Garrick Blake

From the Lawrence Miller Ghost Stories series.
I've seen a lot of poems about the
silence of a snow-covered forest, how the onset
of winter itself somehow keeps sounds from
carrying and all life in the woods slows down to
observe the cold in reverent silence.
Those poems are bullshit. Because while
the woods weren't a cacophony of animal
noises, the sounds that did reach my ears
seemed louder without the background of
natural activity.
Every rustle, the crunch of snow, the
murmur of the river in the distance and the
clatter of bare tree limbs seeming to shiver in
the cold winds seemed amplified - As well as
my own plodding footsteps alongside a group of
much larger men who seemed to move through
the forest without burdening the environment
with sounds of their own.Cover of Murmurs of the River of No Return by Garrick Blake

There is no snuggling but there is a snug. Available October 11.
Still having a few hours before we could check in to the hotel, we stopped to waste some time in The Snug in Skerries,
another charming pub on the coast of the Irish Sea. At some
point, a reasonable person would ask themselves how much
whiskey is too much. Before that, I'd just settle for finding out
how much was enough.

For books about a bunch of haunted places, the Lawrence Miller Ghost Stories Series has surprisingly few moths. The upcoming book about Savannah makes up for all of that:
Once she came out, I took Lydia's place in the bathroom and hastily cleaned up and dressed. I selected a
flannel shirt and canvas jacket over a t-shirt which had a big picture of Mothman across the front.
"Really?" Lydia asked, "That's what you're wearing? Outside? Around people?"
I pulled my flannel closed over it, "This was supposed to be a simple guy's weekend. I wasn't anticipating
anyone I would need to impress."
"Let's get moving before any more of your expectations kill us," she replied, opening the door and
ushering me out into the hallway.

Book 5 is out in October. From the Lawrence Miller Ghost Stories series --
The city never truly sleeps, and
neither do its ghosts. Especially there, in
the heart of Chicago's old neighborhoods
where history clings to the crumbling
brickwork and alleys echo with secrets.
They say if you listen close enough, you
can still hear the whispers of deals made
in backrooms and footsteps that never
quite fade away.
That night, it felt as if the past
had settled over the streets like a heavy
fog. We found ourselves drawn to the
faded façade of an abandoned bodega, its
windows long boarded up, its doors
marked with symbols from another era,
as if it had once been some speakeasy or
illicit meeting house.
Ghost stories about Chicago have
circulated for years; gangsters who
refused to rest, debts left unpaid, and
vendettas that bleed across generations.
