I voted in Vancouver's municipal election yesterday, during an advanced voting day. There's advanced voting again on October 10 and October 13, and then the general election day on October 17! Please get out there and vote. Ken Sim's ABC has governed from a […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
A tortoiseshell cat stands on a table, sniffing the back of a purple and white sticker that a person is holding up. The sticker reads "I Voted" and has the logos for the City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver Votes public awareness campaign.

My Nikon Coolpix P900, which I got already secondhand over two years ago, is slowly accumulating damage to the lenses (which are fixed, so I can't easily swap them out). The two big cracks around the edges don't seem to intrude into the image, but smaller bits of dust or chipping near the centre […]

I recently started listening to Conspirituality, the podcast, and it's a very interesting overview of a variety of topics from a very interesting mix of perspectives I'm not used to hearing. I especially like when Matthew starts talking about Canada and its peculiarities, biased as I am […]

Interesting read from a professor in Berlin on the ideological dynamics at play in the recent Berlin election... and frankly just about everywhere else, though with strongly varying electoral outcomes. tribunemag.co.uk/2026/09/germany-so…

Warning from Germany: It’s Socialism or Barbarism
Fascism is at the door, and liberals are ushering it in. Only the left offers hope.

Slime molds are so weird and cool. This is some sort of Stemonitis, which I found near Cultus Lake. #SlimeMold #Stemonitis #Slime #Mold #iNaturalist #Macro #Nature #BritishColumbia #Canada
An extreme close-up photo of a cluster of slime mold growths. They are long, thin tubes of chocolatey brown, growing on top of extremely thin black filamentous stalks. The front of the cluster, in focus, extends far into the background and out of frame, suggesting there are hundreds of such tubes.

Part of my effort to reduce my US media consumption has been not just looking for media from Canada, but also exploring more of the work our cousins in Australia are doing. The public broadcaster was an easy entry point; and I'm really enjoying the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's suite of […]

I've already seen several lists circulating that claim to list the last-minute demands made by the US in the Canada-US trade negotiations, but they're all AI-generated and none of the original posters are able/willing to share sources to the individual claims. Really wish the negotiating team […]

Couple of retaliatory measures I'd like to see from Canada if we're going to actually retaliate: 1. Move to eliminate or minimize use of US-based software for all government operations. Look to what Europe is doing. 2. Reinstate and raise the Digital Services Tax. 3. Ban US ownership of […]

For folks in North Vancouver-Capilano, today is when advanced voting starts! Check your voter information card for your advanced polling station. This by-election is a chance to send a message to the government and the country that not everybody is thrilled with Carney's corporate agenda. The […]

On September 9th I'll be giving a talk on springtails at Nerd Nite Vancouver! I love these weird little guys, and I've found they're a fun entry point into macro photography, microfauna, and a different way of thinking about wildlife. If you'd like to come […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
An extremely close-up photo of a tiny arthropod. It has a large, egg-shaped, almost spherical back end with a small head in front, six little legs, and two long antennae. It is yellow with geometric reddish-brown markings patterned along its body.

Glad to see the Star reporting more on the out-of-province funding and backing of the Alberta separatist movement. Most of the country seems to be sleepwalking through a disingenuous influence campaign to bolster the movement. I find it very concerning. Telling ourselves that it can't happen is […]

I'm participating in a panel on misinformation and manipulation presented by @OpenMediaOrg on August 18th in Surrey! It'll be a chance to discuss patterns I've seen and wrestled with in my time in politics, and also dust off my philosophy degree. Come check […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

It turns out that in order to make a fairly small renovation in my home, I need to apply for a permit with the city, which requires that I submit building plans, which I can only get by paying a fee to request the plans... from the city. As a systems designer, this really frustrates me […]

Big news! I'm running for nomination as one of COPE's candidates for Vancouver's Park Board in the October elections. I've spent a lot of time photographing nature in city's parks, and I want to ensure our nature is well taken care of. The nomination […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
