Good question! I think it's just hard to find natural landforms that match the ones on 13 at Augusta. It's for the same reason that MacKenzie's Lido hole (which MacKenzie said was sort of a template for 13) hasn't been replicated very often.

I forgot to mention Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem—maybe the most tantalizing of them all. A mostly intact Perry Maxwell design on a dramatic piece of land. It wouldn't take much to make it one of the best municipal courses in the country.

On this (slightly fanciful but no doubt compelling) map, you could maybe get close to recovering 1, 9, 11, and 13-18. Maybe 6 with some rerouting. Part of 5 is still there, too. But there's a lot of work to do—legally, bureaucratically, and architecturally.

The fact is, the inputs necessary to keep most U.S. courses alive/playable will always be higher than those necessary at British links courses. But a broad acceptance of seasonal/less irrigated/unirrigated fairways (where feasible) would be a great start.

It's tough to beat Boston for municipal courses. The one-two punch of George Wright and Franklin Park is unique in American golf. Then, if you venture a bit outside the city, you can hit Highland Links and Olde Salem Greens, which are 🤌.

A few greens at the underrated Links Course at Sand Hollow, designed by Andy Staples and John Fought in 2008. I think these do a really fine job of emulating The Old Course's at-grade, rippling greens without seeming like replicas or feeling out of place in the desert setting.
