I’ve spent 10 years writing this book. It started life as my PhD and it’s grown and I’m very proud of it. I had the absolute privilege to interview Irish speakers and deaf people about their lived experiences dealing with the police and the courts in Ireland.

This box contains the French press and artisan coffee I travel with and the voice of me asking my mam if she can buy oat milk before I come home for a visit because the six year old instant coffee in the back of the press won’t do.
A small tin box that reads “My favourite notions” in large script with “Just a little box for” above. In the top right corner is a round logo of a leaf and “KNITS by cindy ekman” written in a circle

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat is phenomenal. It’s a cookbook but it’s so much more. It teaches you the science of cooking, the reasons why certain things taste good, how to balance food, how to be confident in the kitchen. I couldn’t recommend it enough. I took notes and I’ll reread it 5/5🌟

I hated The Overstory by Richard Powers. I found it so preachy, and so long without any pay off. It’s beautiful prose, sure but the characters are entirely unbelievable and I never understood their motivations other than as plot devices. Only finished it because it was for my book club 2/5 stars ⭐️

Spare by Prince Harry was honestly such a slog. I enjoy mess and trivial pettiness which I thought this might be full of. But really it’s just very sad and when it’s not very sad, it’s excruciatingly tedious. Monarchies are absolutely ludicrous. 2.5/5 ⭐️

It’s the rights we’ve long been denied girls, a government *checks notes* “striving to support the provision of care”. Feminist goals complete, we can all go home (but not because the constitution says we have to, that’s not gonna be the law anymore)

Has a bit of a break from reading recently but got back into it with Raising Good Humans. Gentle parenting is all the rage on Parenting Instagram so I wanted to read about it. Liked this a lot, some solid advice and tips, and I’m not generally a self help book kinda gal. 4.5/5 ⭐️

The first episode is all about nutmeg and how the ghastly Dutch did a genocide on the island of Run in Indonesia but then the English came to save them and it’s a WILDLY DIFFERENT TELLING of that story than was catalogued in Empireland.

You'd think it'd be hard to make a documentary series about the spice trade while also refusing to mention British colonialism or the East Indian Trading Company in a whole episode about India, but Joanna Lumley and the BBC somehow managed it.

Can’t believe I read It Ends With Us. It’s so bad. Poorly written. Characters are so one dimensional. Utter drivel. Tell me this isn’t Twilight but with domestic abuse (& a fairly limp understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse at that). I don’t think I’m cut out for whatever genre this is 0/5⭐️

This was fun, silly and profound. Liked it a lot but probably too close to work to be reading during mat leave (I made some notes and I’m not trying to make notes). This is also the book with sudden Thatcher sympathy because (boo hoo) she had to deepen her voice to fit in with tories 🤮 3.5/5 ⭐️

The Liar’s Daughter by Claire Allan was a speedy read, I flew through it to get to the end. The narrative and timeline hopping was good but I occasionally found myself confused about who was speaking because the chapters were so short. TW for abuse. 3.4/5 ⭐️
