Garik @garik.codes · 18/08/2026You know something's up when the bond market is making headlines. The past month has seen some unprecedented moves--taking the US's Euro reserves to prop up the Yen because our Secretary of the Treasury is trying to limit the selloff of dollars? Great. Everybody strap in. 121
Garik @garik.codes · 17/08/2026You know how you're supposed to call before you dig?? Well, last week ODOT apparently didn't, and on their first day of a project here in Wallowa County they cut off the internet and mobile networks in one fell swoop. It's our only line in and out for ~5k people 👀 000
Garik @garik.codes · 07/08/2026Real talk: why don't we price homes properly? As in, why do we just throw a sticker price on it and completely ignore interest + time? I know there are real reasons--asset value and insurance and taxation--but in 2021 buying at 2.65%, you'd pay roughly 1.5x sticker price. 2 years later, it was 2.5x 000
Garik @garik.codes · 03/08/2026Yesterday, while driving out for a long run, I put on an episode of Kubernetes Bytes. I was pleased to learn that my setup of 3 NUCs with K3s running on them--from 2018 even--is the exact stack that Chick-fil-A uses on the edge at each of their ~3k stores 🤯 120
Garik @garik.codes · 02/08/2026This is still a crazy accomplishment over the last decade even though China's progress is slowing down due to its continued reliance on coal. 010
Garik @garik.codes · 01/08/2026Today I was trying to sign up for a free trial with Strava when I got stuck in a loop. In the app I was in no man's land--I'd try to pay, get blocked because of some error, be told to activate, get blocked, and on and on. 100
Garik @garik.codes · 27/07/2026Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or Alice In Chains. Two easy ones, in the same vein, I've had on the last little bit: 130
Garik @garik.codes · 25/07/2026Last week I was visiting Seattle, and of course homelessness popped up--from being confronted with it head on, to having conversations about it with a date, or calling my brother in Singapore and hearing how his daughter doesn't like LA, SF, or Seattle because of the issue :/ 🧵 1/15 110
Garik @garik.codes · 24/07/2026"You could potentially radically drop the cost of healthcare." The possibility is there, for sure, but sadly the pessimist/realist in me has a hard time swallowing it. And don't even get me started on the digital democracy bs at the end. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 23/07/2026Getting to Windows 11 is a pain. Even though updates are on and group policies allow updates, nothing happens. I have to download and run the installation assistant. Then, since that doesn't fully do its job, I have to install and execute the PC health check setup. 100
Garik @garik.codes · 22/07/2026Going from a 28-port PoE managed behemoth next to my desk down to two separate 8-port PoE+ fanless switches has been amazing. So much peace and quiet! 010
Garik @garik.codes · 13/07/2026A week into my zettelkasten experiment, I can tell that my perfectionism got the best of me--the biggest help was recognizing that fleeting notes are your friends. I wanted to make any note a main note right away. This was too much like trying to write and edit at the same time. 220
Garik @garik.codes · 09/07/2026After my mistake last week of wiping my Ventoy, I found out that you can't install it from Mac. That is unless you use Mactoy! Pretty nice project that worked for my use case at least. github.com/cashcon57/ma... 000
Garik @garik.codes · 09/07/2026Just a small reminder about the importance of network monitoring and alerting: we had a site where the AC adapter for an eight-port dumb switch was unintentionally unplugged. There was not any security footage for 6 days because alerting was not fully set up 👀 110
Garik @garik.codes · 08/07/2026Finally gonna try #zettelkasten after being scared for so long. @bobdoto.bsky.social breakin it down 140
Garik @garik.codes · 07/07/2026That moment when you realize you just ran fdisk, then wipefs and deleted your Ventoy instead of your hard drive. Classic. This is the equivalent of measure twice, cut once. Always lsblk first to know what you're actually messing with 😶 #Arch #oops 010
Garik @garik.codes · 03/07/2026I knew this going into it, but it's still true. Maybe even double true. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 03/07/2026Turns out that if you max out your RAM--default was 2 GB in Rancher Desktop--then everything fails without any real explanation. Fortunately bumping it up in preferences solved it. RAM shortages are everywhere ;) 000
Garik @garik.codes · 02/07/2026I don't know who needs to hear this--ok, I do, and I've told them--but a ticketing system *is not* a program management system. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 01/07/2026In today's chapter of "It's Always DNS," it was actually DNSSEC options in my browser. Had to exempt my local domain. That took ~20 minutes too long to come around to. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 01/07/2026TIL that GPU-accelerated terminal emulators like Alacritty or WezTerm don't work if you don't have a GPU 🤦 Was on a VM and tried to install--downloaded just fine. Would not open. I should've known!! I'm pretty locked down, so I don't want to go through the trouble of passthrough. Oh well. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 01/07/2026This is insanely well researched and presented: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW0X...youtube.comThe Gen Alpha MelodyYouTube video by Carl E. Martin 000
Garik @garik.codes · 01/07/2026Giving @offprint.app a shot. I'm intrigued. For me personally this might be a "How do you make things complex? By trying to make them simpler." Time will tell! garik.offprint.appgarik.offprint.appgarik.codes >> stdoutClick to read garik.codes >> stdout by Garik, an Offprint publication. 020
Garik @garik.codes · 30/06/2026Was it really over a year since my last blog post? Damn. www.garik.codes/blog/k3s 000
Garik @garik.codes · 30/06/2026My biggest reaction against AI comes from headshots. You know, the ones where you take a bunch of selfies and you get back a 'professional headshot.' For the life of me, I can't get over them. They're 80% there, sure, but they are too smooth. Literally. And it's noticeable enough to be annoying. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 27/06/2026Pet peeve: when folks are presenting spreadsheets and are stuck with start menus, windows, tabs, bookmark bars, and titles. Especially for long documents that you'll be going through for hours. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 26/06/2026Got a call from a coworker accusing me of locking him out of a server. After tell him that, no, I didn't do that, he realized that he was using the wrong username 😶 Please, don't be that person. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 25/06/2026Well wouldn't you know, just got done reading Breath and then this fancy Ratatui project comes out. In case anyone else needs a little breath pacer in the terminal :) 000
Garik @garik.codes · 25/06/2026A couple week's ago I met up with a buddy who was asking for help with consulting and freelancing. Mostly, though, she bitched about how dumb businesses are to use AI for literally every flyer or poster ever. I agree, and so for my courtyard party I made this beauty the old fashioned way. 000
Garik @garik.codes · 24/06/2026So last night I had the gumption to manually set up Obsidian sync with GitHub on my phone! It was pretty sweet--had to get termux and termux:boot from F-Droid, install packages, create directories, switch permissions, navigate the file system, make a script, and set a cronjob. But it works :) 020
Garik @garik.codes · 23/06/2026In today's fun + wild distraction, I learned about why JMAP is superior to IMAP, plus was reminded of the insane complexity of email in general. It's been 50 years of tacking one thing on another and patching this or that. Stalwart--built in Rust btw--is a self-hosted email server that looks rad! 000
Garik @garik.codes · 23/06/2026I don't travel as much as I used to, but this is about right for the last year or so. Thanks, @dawarich.bsky.social, for a fun distraction today. 121
Garik @garik.codes · 22/06/2026TIL that curl doesn't really work in the default PowerShell because it is just is an alias for Invoke-WebRequest. You have to run curl.exe for it to work correctly. And that PowerShell 5 and PowerShell 7 are not the same thing, even remotely? And that this is all very confusing. 100
Garik @garik.codes · 17/06/2026Finally got starship up and going at work. It makes terminal hopping much nicer! 000
Garik @garik.codes · 16/06/2026Other headaches waiting to happen. But think about the learning opportunities! Took me an embarrassing 10 minutes to realize the secure boot settings are buried in initial setup on ProxMox, see: forum.proxmox.com/threads/disa... 000
Reposted by GarikAccessibility Awareness @a11yawareness.bsky.social · 13/06/2026Avoid forcing users to memorize information. For example, use field labels instead of placeholder text. Placeholder text disappears when users begin typing. This forces them to memorize placeholder text or delete information so they can see placeholders again. 2315
Garik @garik.codes · 07/06/2026Well add this to the wishlist. Or project list? It'd be rad to have containerlab for Zed and not just VS Code. Anyone have experience doing extensions for Zed? 000
