I love this research because it really shows how much of an impact our words can have on young people. It looks at how the brain reacts to parental criticism and shows that it triggers the same areas linked to social pain and self-doubt. Language matters. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Things that, unfortunately, are not at all surprising… “The suspension rate for pupils eligible for free school meals was four times that of those not eligible. Year 9 had the highest suspension rate, followed by year 10.”

Message to staff this week: Adolescent Brain and Social Motivation: young persons behaviour is a response to something - social / gaining respect / self of belonging (or not). Relational practice builds positive relationships and make YP feel valued, seen and respected. Use of language = 🔑

10-25 is an excellent book / collection of research by David Yeager. It forces you to consider how to have more of a ‘mentor mindset’. Highly recommend. Will try and link to behaviour and equity over the coming weeks.
