you know what would be significantly cheaper than heating a house all winter in massachusetts? if we just sold this place and used the money to buy a tiny 2-season cabin in maine and some swamp shack in louisiana and became snowbird people. TO SAVE MONEY the math is real

this stuff drives me batty. I know the internet makes it seem like a spooky immortal plant, but bittersweet is significantly easier to pull than a ROW of lilac bushes! it’s not only going to spread like wildfire in its freshly cleared out space, but it will inevitably spread into the taker’s yard.
facebook post someone writes: looking for someone to pull out a row of lilacs. they’ve become too overrun by bittersweet and we can’t maintain them.

you can’t tell but this northern bush honeysuckle was a quite large, mature burning bush covered in berries 5 minutes earlier. #nativeplants #gardening

most swamps are used as a dumping ground and contain a historic record of people’s filth. I had long moved out all the tires from the swamp with the exception of this one that was always so heavy with muck, I couldn’t lift it. well apparently I am strong and powerful now #victory

I must be really crushing it with my forest clearing garden lately — a meadow fritillary was visiting today. These are less of a generalist yard butterfly and are more specialists of wet meadows. Uncommon in MA, I’d never actually seen one before. #habitatgardening #bugsky 🦋

the forest has arrived! some of it anyway. don’t laugh at my sad tiny forest, ok. I’m growing the rest myself. these are from new england wetlands plants, a wholesale grower nearby that specializes in habitat restoration. I’m lucky to have access to straight species with local ecotypes.

garden starting to thin out and with plants kind if flopping over in random places. also, I demolished a chunk of it for a bug house.

it is socially acceptable to go to the grocery store to purchase dill to sustain the population of swallowtails that have decimated your carrot-family crops but it is frowned upon if you encourage sphinx moths to have at it with your tomatoes that are pretty much done for the season anyway

I know I've kidnapped their larvae and raised them in a hamper before, but this still felt like meeting a celebrity. This is my absolute favorite moth and I cannot believe I used to feed them to my chickens. Everyone, meet the most fearsome garden pest in the flesh: Manduca sexta. #teammoth
