Senior Republicans are pressing Trump to suspend US diesel exports as record fuel prices, driven largely by the war on Iran and tighter global supplies, increase pressure on farmers, truckers and manufacturers ahead of the midterms.

Republicans demand action on diesel prices

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley called on Trump to temporarily suspend diesel exports, arguing that the government has the authority to restrict overseas sales when domestic economic interests are at stake.

“If our [government] can embargo chips to China it can embargo diesel to help American farmers [and] truckers,” Grassley wrote on X.

“High diesel prices ARE KILLING FARMERS INCOME,” he added.

Representative Ashley Hinson, another Iowa Republican, called for Washington to consider a range of measures to reduce costs, including “every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices”.

She said those measures could include “pausing diesel exports . . . and creating a diesel relief programme to help our farmers and truckers being crushed by the high costs”.

War on Iran fuels domestic price pressures

Diesel plays a central role across the US economy, powering agricultural machinery, freight transportation and large parts of the manufacturing and construction sectors.

Higher prices have therefore extended well beyond fuel stations, increasing transportation and production expenses and forcing some manufacturers to raise their prices.

The FT reported that the war on Iran triggered the largest part of the recent increase in US fuel costs, while disruptions connected to the Russia-Ukraine conflict have further tightened the global diesel market.

The resulting inflationary pressure has increasingly become a political concern for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections, particularly in rural areas heavily dependent on agriculture and trucking.

Background
The JSOW family currently consists of multiple weapon variants. The AGM-154A or baseline configuration carries 145 BLU-97 submunitions and is used to attack fixed and relocatable soft targets such as parked and revetted aircraft, trucks, armored personnel carriers and surface-to-air missile sites. The AGM-154A was employed by Navy F/A-18s against targets in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom and in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. More than 400 AGM-154As have been used in combat. A modified version of the AGM-154A, termed AGM-154A-1 was developed and produced for Foreign Military Sales. The AGM-154A-1 includes the basic JSOW-A capability with a BLU-111 500 lb. warhead in lieu of the BLU-97 submunitions.
