Mayflowers or Trailing Arbutus are perhaps the most beautiful-smelling flowers in the world. They're also our Provincial flower in Nova Scotia. #mayflowers #forest
Three delicate pink/white Mayflowers with broad green leaves against a mossy log.

It was a beautiful day for a walk in the forest.
Tall hemlock grove with light shining on the needles. The light also left shadows of the trees on the brown path.

If you are Canadian and old enough to remember the first version of this, he uses a different name at the end, but it's actually the same man. Jeff Douglas is now a CBC radio personality. I like this version better. youtu.be/_OzbmriDgQc?...

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

www.instagram.com/reel/DFxmJYF... 0n Feb 5, the attorney general legalized the death penalty for "illegal aliens." We feared this was coming, but they did it on week 3. I found the memo on the justice page of .gov #resist #genocide #migrants #illegalaliens

I love whales, and have been haunted by humpback songs before. It's not surprising that they have more in common with human language than we thought. We pervasively fail to give other life forms the credit and respect they deserve as our neighbours. #whales #language #science

My ride to chemo this morning was beautiful. We saw the sun rise while driving through Burnside to the bridge. #sunrise #novascotia

Young people today have a much harder time than Gen X and Boomers did, but they still keep going. We can take inspiration from them in the darkening days. #NovaScotia #Canada #CanadianEconomy #ClimateCrisis #Resilence #Youth #Resist

The US gov is asking private companies to cancel their diversity programs, including hiring, but also little courses about bias, etc. Here are the companies resisting so far: #DEI #Resist

The author described his book as: "A story about a boy who comes to understand hard things about faith and empire, and must choose if he’s willing to upend his beliefs in search of the truth. I wish it wasn’t quite so timely, but it’s a book the world still needs in 2025." #Books #MiddleSchoolLit

This windswept spruce at Martinique Beach was born 100 years too late to be in a Group of Seven painting. Those guys preferred pines anyway. #trees #wind #CanadianArt #MartiniqeBeach
A ragged, windswept spruce tree rooted at far left leans into the center. It's surrounded by yellowed beach grass and other trees and water in the distance.

It was -10 yesterday in Nova Scotia, but apparently this tree was already preparing for spring. #trees #winter #hope
Close-up pic of two buds at the end of a branch of a tree. The background is blurry gray, with another blurry branch in the left top corner.

We are heading into dark times. It might feel like everything is outside our control, but it's not. Continue living out your values in daily life. Be kind, speak up when you notice prejudice, help those in need. Every little bit of light makes a difference. #bethelight #resist

Three friends took my children and me to Martinique Beach. We bundled up. I'm still learning to walk on uneven ground after a bad break, and my energy is low from chemo. I was beyond happy to be there.
Blue sky cluttered with clouds above waves on a beach. Sunlight is reflected on the water.

I don't know what kind of tree this is on my street. It's impressive that anything is left hanging on it in January. #trees #januarysky #novascotiawinter
Round spiky balls hang from tree branches against blue sky.

Two days before I was scheduled for major surgery, we had a bedbug scare. With the tight deadline we bagged up the bedding and clothing immediately. The exterminator found no traces of bugs the next day. This image of the shadows on the back of the empty closet made up for some of the annoyance.
White backlit background with grey lines criss crossing diagonally, creating a chaotic diamond pattern.

Cuttle fish passed adapted versions of the marshmallow test. We tend to have bias for other mammals like us, but it's amazing what other life forms can do.

My kids, 7 and 9, aren't loving the label Gen Alpha. They insist Sigma is better than Alpha. I suggest Gen Skibidi may be appropriate. 😅 #generationAlpha #GenAlpha #skibodi

These are the stones I carry with me. The top five are Bay of Fundy agate that I tumbled. The bottom four (and pewter charm) were gifted to me by friends since my cancer diagnosis. #agate #fundy #rocks
Seven smooth semi-precious stones (mostly agates), a pewter charm of a sand dollar, and a piece of lapis lazuli cut into a crescent moon.
