I keep getting an email from some dude who wants me to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to invent a genetic test to determine whether people came from their parents left or right gonads because …somehow this will explain everything?

Really enjoyed it. It’s both the best fantasy world building and the best honest mystery book I’ve read in a long time

This totally happens to me. And then the world just…keeps trying to do things? I’m like “why are you talking to me? Can’t you tell that there are SCENTS and my brain is full and can’t process any more stimulation?”

Let’s play a game! It’s called “if you advocate for a Nazi or a rapist for public office, you lose”. The rules are very, very simple, but for some reason, many people seem to be struggling with it.

As a Philadelphian who spent a decade in Cleveland, I’m concerned to see Philly placed in western Ohio.

That all makes sense. I always ask and respect if patients don’t want. My center keeps data in our firewall not the general cloud (but I understand worry about leaks). I can’t type & listen & consult other docs all at the same time so not typing helps me help patients but it’s ok to say no

As a doc caring for people with complex disease, writing notes is not thinking about your problem in a way that helps; it’s busy work for insurance. Not doing the busy work means I have time to call other experts, look at This One Case Report that’s similar, call your PCP to coordinate, etc

I was offered snake liquor in China. There was an entire preserved snake in the bottle.

It was particularly disappointing that one of the loudest hecklers was officially there as a Raab volunteer. I’d come in as a decided voter, who had donated to the Raab campaign, but his inability to speak up for women has cost him my vote.

Really disappointed in the way the West Philly forum for the PA-03 is handled. This is a tough moment in time and it’s not clear how to handle it, but heckling Dr. Stanford while she talked about the double standards for WOC was not the right way by anyone’s standards (½)

It’s almost like we should invent a concept wherein people pay into the government proportional to their wealth so that the government can provide centralized services and take advantage of economies of scale. We could call it “taxes”

I use machine learning decision classification tools (e.g. random forest) & supervised and unsupervised clustering extensively, which have been “AI” for decades and are essential statistical tools. I think it’s important in scientific contexts to specify large language models vs AI more generally

I wasn’t planning on preordering because I’m still making my way through your first book, but the world needs more astrophysics books and more intersectional feminism and I’m learning from bsky how critical preorders are so I’m in!

I totally meal prep cold sesame noodles as a big batch and eat them for lunch every day for a week. Soba noodles+a veggie that keeps well (pea pods, cabbage) = delicious lunch with lots of fiber.

Thank you. The reliance on voluntary philanthropy with attached strings vs a taxation system determined by the public is deeply problematic academically (and elsewhere) by allowing the rich an outsized control of the agenda and what’s in bounds to study. This is a very dark edge of that spectrum

I caught pertussis from a patient my intern year. I was off shift the following week after the diagnosis came back and occ health missed prophylactically treating me. I coughed for six months. It was horrible. Life advice: don’t get pertussis

I propose a new rule: anything other than “immigration is good, actually” should render someone unelectable.

My daughter‘s 6th grade class read one of your books, which I thought was incredible (I’m a long-time fan), but the teacher kept calling it “afrofuturism”, and it really bothered me: you‘ve written clearly and extensively about why your work is “africanfuturism”

As an adult, I’ve assigned myself reading units — the first book by an author of a specific background might really challenge me with new-to-me narrative norms, settings, words, etc. but if I read four in a row, it starts to feel familiar and I can settle in. It’s really let me broaden my taste

I am less than 20 pages into @emilytesh.net’s brilliant new novel, Incandescent, and my mind is racing about how problematic my habit of giving the TCA cycle enzymes their own little personalities would be in that world.
