Learning japanese is going to take a few years of effort, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible. After almost a year of learning, I can mostly follow along playing Paper Mario TTYD in japanese. Sure, Dragon Quest and Yakuza 0 are beyond me for now, but I'll get there!

I myself genuinely enjoy the work of translators and when they get a bit creative with their translations. Am german, and comparing a lot of german translations to english originals, they often have their own character and I enjoy that. A machine cannot manage something like that

Have started learning it almost a year ago, and so my perception is: Slowly. Vocab (anki!), grammar, reading manga, watching anime, playing video games, listening to lets plays, and looking up tons of words you don't know yet until you do. It's a long journey ^^

I also have a physical copy of Tae Kim's guide, and I'd swear by it. I encounter all of the things he describes when reading manga or watching anime, and it helps a lot!

Fwiw, it gets easier and easier to engage with it as you pick up more vocab. And I'd recommend finding a way to engage with it that's fun for you. Read manga, play games, do something fun! It really doesn't have to be hours and hours of chores.

There's addons for the anki web app (which you don't have to use). You can just download user generated decks or make your own. You can also use other programs, anki just refers to flashcards with a spaced repition system. You can grab a box and do physical ones too.

I just use anki (or something similar) for vocab, books or online resources for grammar, and native material in the language to slowly get used to it and build comprehension. I can absolutely recommend anki, there's tons of premade decks for a lot of languages that people have made

If I sat down with a text book and tried to memorize all of these, I'd burn out. I just do it by knowing counters exist and acknowledging whenever I stumble across them in manga I read and games I play. And eventually, you just get used to them because you've seen them really often.
