Dino Crisis – now playable on modern PCs
Hot on the heels of revisiting lightgun chaos in our recent look back at Time Crisis, another late-’90s classic has clawed its way onto modern hardware. Only this time, instead of terrorists and pedal-dodging, it’s velociraptors in a lab coat apocalypse. Capcom has released Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 on Steam for the first time, following their release on GOG in 2025…

Why I ended up running ScummVM on a Raspberry Pi
Most Raspberry Pi retro setups lean heavily towards arcade action. Load it up, pick a ROM, mash a button, repeat. That’s fine — but it also means one entire strand of classic gaming tends to get ignored. Point-and-click adventures were, of course, about patience, curiosity, humour, and sometimes just sitting there staring at the screen while your brain quietly worked on a puzzle.

I am *really* looking forward to Lemmings Reloaded on the C64
If you're a regular reader, you might recall some previous reports on the development of a new version of Lemmings for the Commodore 64. When I first looked at Jörg Karwath’s work on Lemmings Reloaded, it was clear that this wasn’t just another fan project. It was a mission to right a historical wrong. The original 1994 C64 port by Psygnosis was, to put it politely, a compromise.

Why FZ: Formation Z is worth revisiting if you love transforming robots
Japan loves its transforming robots, and I've been a fan since I saw my first Transformer in 1984. There’s something deeply satisfying about the ability to switch forms on the fly — adapting to the situation, trading brute force for speed, or vice versa — and it’s a design idea that never really gets old. Which is no doubt why Clear River Games has announced that Jaleco's classic Japanese shooter…

The Dark Rites of Arkham carries the torch for classic point-and-click horror
For all the talk of point-and-click adventures being a relic of the past, the genre has really seen a resurgence in the past few years. Thanks largely to the success of ScummVM, vast swathes of classic adventures remain playable today — and just as importantly, influential. You can see that influence clearly in new releases like Return to Monkey Island…

Super Bomberman Collection rescues Bomberman’s forgotten 16-bit history
Bomberman has always been one of those series that quietly defined multiplayer in the 16-bit era. Long before online lobbies, battle passes, or even analogue sticks, it was Bomberman that taught us the joy of local chaos: four players, one screen, and friendships tested by a single misplaced bomb. So the announcement of Super Bomberman Collection — revealed during February’s Nintendo Direct and now confirmed for physical release by Red Art Games and Konami — feels like a proper nod to that legacy, rather than just another digital compilation quietly dropped on a storefront.

Half-Life 2 has been quietly changing for 20 years
It is easy to think of Half-Life 2 as a static masterpiece—a fixed point in gaming history that arrived in 2004 and stayed there. But if you’ve been playing it on Steam recently, you aren't playing the game that shipped two decades ago. As highlighted in this fascinating deep-dive video, Gordon Freeman’s journey to City 17 has been tweaked, broken, and rebuilt more times than an airboat.

F-22: Air Dominance Fighter is landing on Steam
Has MicroProse revived the days of proper flight sim fun? There was a time when flight sims shipped in a big box with a detailed manual to read, preferably before you played the game. Back in the 16-bit and early PC era, games like F-117A Nighthawk (or its C64 predecessor, Project Stealth Fighter), F-15 Strike Eagle and Gunship struck a near-perfect balance: believable aircraft, satisfying combat, and just enough realism to make you feel clever rather than exhausted.

The NewZealand Story: Untold Adventure is heading to Steam in February 2026, reviving the 1988 arcade favourite with modern visuals, new mechanics, and a full re-imagining of Tiki the kiwi’s platforming adventure. Ghosts ’n Goblins gets an arcade-style rebirth on the Commodore Plus/4
Every so often, a retro project turns up that makes you stop and say: hang on, that machine can do that? That’s exactly the case with a brand new, fan-made arcade-style version of Ghosts ’n Goblins for the Commodore Plus/4. Yes, the Plus/4. The often-forgotten sibling in Commodore’s 8-bit family. And yet, here it is running something that looks and feels far closer to Capcom’s brutal 1985 arcade classic than it should…

MyArcade was the biggest retro story at CES 2026
Several announcements were made at CES concerning retro emulation systems, retro styled computers, and retro-friendly game and mobile controllers. I’ve always been fascinated by CES. Despite being a technology writer for around 20 years, I’ve never actually been to the event. I’m not a great flyer, which has probably put me off in the past, although to be honest, I would take the trip now just to say that I had.

Podcast special: Remembering the arcades
There is a switch of pace in this week's podcast, which revives a mostly-overlooked chat between Christian Cawley and Gareth Kavanagh. He's a regular guest on Christian's other podcast, Kasterborous, and a few years ago the two of them got together to record a short-lived series. One episode, about trips to British arcades in the 1980s and 1990s, is particularly relevant to Gaming Retro, so it is re-presented here.

A real Game Boy, now with a joystick: meet ArcadeBoy
A clever new Kickstarter project called ArcadeBoy is live, promising to transform an original Nintendo Game Boy (DMG-01) into a fully playable tabletop arcade cabinet without soldering or permanent mods. Instead of emulation, the actual Game Boy hardware drives the system, with a custom board capturing its video and control signals and scaling them up to a larger screen and classic arcade layout.
