I'm honestly kind of impressed at how wholly and completely vapid the Mario Galaxy movie is. It's a fantastic soundtrack with fun animation and one of the most empty, meaningless stories I've seen from a kids movie in a long time.

My understanding is that it simulates a desktop, which like... it functions to move the story forward, but fully lacks the feeling that you're actually messing with the game's files. Feels completely within the game's fiction.

Oh for sure! It'd absolutely be in a top 20 for games I think are the best of all time from a more objective perspective, maybe even top 10, but my personal favorites lean much more toward games that engage me emotionally.

Portal is that for me. Like, it's perfect. I couldn't improve it if you gave me an infinite budget. And I do love it, but it's not like a top 10, or probably even top 20 for me. But it is flawless.

I'm not the kind of person who hates everything Final Fantasy has put out since X or anything, but I do hope the success of games like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Clair Obscur encourages the series to try turn-based combat again. I do kinda miss it.

I knew I might not like what they do with this, since the only thing I disliked about Remake was the meta Whispers stuff. But I wasn't prepared for how bad even the basic handling of it all would be. This is souring me on the entire game in retrospect.

I'm still in the process of the final fight of FFVII Rebirth (finally), but I fucking hate this. I'm flabbergasted just how wildly they've missed the mark here. I expected them to pull some nonsense, but I didn't expect them to dramatically botch the most important moment of the whole damn story.

I didn't think I'd be the type to like Blue Prince, but damn if I'm not 20 hours and 60 pages of notes in and having an absolute blast. I thought the note-taking would be tedious & obtuse, but the feeling of finally realizing the key to a bunch of random things you've been noting is second to none.

Okay well good news, I have made progress! I'm still not sure what my ultimate goals will be, but I have a couple permanent changes and I figured out some VERY satisfying puzzling last night, so. I have 40+ pages of notes and I am having a blast.

Also, I have to agree with some criticism I've heard: Jill deserved better. A great character who had her agency robbed of her repeatedly and reduced to a background character when she should have maintained a close supporting role.

As usual, few of my complaints have anything to do with the reasons many people hated on it. The combat was fine, the characters were great, the more grounded tone of the first half of so was the best part. It was almost so solid, but it lost itself as it went.

FINALLY finished Final Fantasy XVI, and... Man. I like a lot about this game. I like a lot about what it's trying to do. I just wish it came together better in the end. Won't go into spoilers, but the whole ending fell pretty flat for me. Didn't feel like it had a solid grasp on what it was about.

7. Hollow Knight Played it years back and obsessing over it for the last year or so, but I've only just now actually beaten the final final boss. Damn this game is beautiful. It does everything I love in theory about Soulsbourne storytelling, but in a way that connects with me so much better.

Honestly, I wasn't as obsessed with Hollow Knight back then, so I'm not sure. But I know we got gameplay footage and stuff in the past, and knowing how anticipated this game is I'm just surprised they didn't feature it more prominently.
