"They did what?" Isoldahlia's voice was soft and very cold, aqua eyes flat and lips thin.

"They have accused your young friends of heresy," Lord Haurchefant said grimly, shaking his head in bafflement. "That there is any cause for such an accusation is absurd, of course, but the knights of the Heavensward are zealous in their defense of the church."

And their master thinks he is clever enough to manipulate paragons, she thought darkly. She had no doubt whatsoever that this was the doing of the Archbishop. Every fiber of her being rebelled against that man and his machinations.

"What can we do?" she asked, unwilling to even entertain the idea there was nothing. She remembered the trial of Francel, the demand to prove purity of soul through death at Witchdrop. These bastards would touch Alphinaud and Tataru over her dead body.

"The best strategy would be to challenge the accusers to trial by combat," Ser Aymeric said softly. Isoldahlia turned her glare on him.

The man worked for Thordan. Surely he didn't think she was fool enough to believe he had no part of this as well? His expression was so perfectly, sincerely apologetic it made her teeth ache, so hard did she clench her jaw.

"Tataru would be slaughtered. Surely you cannot be suggesting..."

"Nay!" Haurchefant jumped in reassuringly. "She is permitted to name a champion. They both are. However I am afraid there are none who would willingly stand for them. Too many fear the church, and the Knights of the Heavensward are skilled and deadly all. Would that I could take the place of one of them, but it would be a disastrous political move, as my father has so adamantly pointed out." Haurchefant's frustration nearly radiated off of him.

"I will fight for Tataru," Isoldahlia said without hesitation.
"Alphinaud is more capable than he seems."

"I pray you are right," Ser Aymeric said kindly.

"Is she not incredible?" Haurchefant breathed, eyes nearly sparkling with a combination of delight and admiration. "There is none to match her." The clash of steel was loud in the trial chamber, although the vicious taunts of their knightly opponents was somehow even more obvious.

"Aye," Aymeric said softly, focusing on keeping his hands relaxed against his thighs when they wanted to grip in dismay. "And dangerous." His eyes narrowed as her lance swept out in a distinctive sequence that he had only ever seen one other place. He frowned thoughtfully. "I wonder if they realize quite how implacable an enemy she would be should they continue to oppose her so blatantly.
I fear they are out of their league."

$Day 16- SteelThere was a dull thud as steel clashed against steel, followed by the familiar metallic screeching sound as their blades scraped together before abruptly separating when the young men jump back and away from the other. They were panting hard, their faces contorted with concentration and effort. Exhausted, they circled each other, never losing eye contact. For Haurchefant, this was more than training. It was his chance to show his half-brother he was not to be underestimated. He was here to stay, and he would be the very best knight of House Fortemps. He may not have the name, but he had the blood. He'd show them. For Artoirel, it was a chance to put that Greystone in his place. Mother was right to find his presence in their home abhorrent. It was humiliating and he had to wonder at his father's choice to have let his bastard be part of their family. What baffled him most was how much Father liked him. Sure, he had the decency not to show it in front of Mother, but Artoirel could see it when she wasn't home. He refused to feel pity for his half-brother out of loyalty to his own mother. And yet, he could not help but feel a reluctant admiration for his swordsmanship. Haurchefant had grit. He had courage. Artoirel wondered if things were different, would they have been friends… like real brothers. He scoffed inwardly. Probably not. Haurchefant did not belong. He never would. "Is that the best you've got, Greystone?" he taunted. Haurchefant's eyes narrowed a fraction, but to his credit, he did not raise to the bait. "You wish. Your form is lacking and I find your skill mediocre," Haurchefant said coolly. Artoirel sneered. "Come at me, then, if you think you're better!" he said. "I know I'm better," Haurchefant grinned. Once again, the sound of swords clashing reverberated through the Fortemps gardens as Count Edmont de Fortemps looked on through the window at his two sons. Both the pride of his life. Even breathing was painful, her shallow breaths coming in quick and sharp. Her mind was foggy, her ears ringing with the cacophony of their battle. It was ended, but at what cost?She supposed it didn't matter now. Not anymore. The Endsinger was defeated. Next to her, Zenos was too. The only thing she could do at this moment was wait for her own end. She supposed that was alright. Closing her eyes, she thought of her friends. Each face that swam in her mind's eye was accompanied by a sharp pain of a different sort, one of grief and longing. She thought she was ready to accept the end, but parting really was such sweet sorrow…

And then she thought of him. The man for whom her heart yearned above all else. She thought of his smile and the sound of his laughter. Of his piercing blue eyes that seemed to look right into her soul. His roughened hands on her skin, the taste of his kiss, and the safety of his embrace. She didn't care to stop the tears that trickled out of the corners of her eyes this time. Her heart ached, and she mourned the future that could have been. If only she'd had more time…

Back in Ishgard, Aymeric stared up into the night sky, a prayer on his lips. He had never asked the Fury for much, but he beseeched her tonight to keep Megami safe. To bring her back hale and whole.
