(7/24/26) UNBEATABLE When music is illegal, a young girl plays her song. One half snappy, satisfying rhythm game goodness. And the other half is a soul too big and raw for this game to contain. One of the best Kickstarter decisions I ever made. You just gotta play it.
I don't think I can justify how this one makes me feel with words alone, but I gotta write something.

I backed UNBEATABLE on Kickstarter in 2021, immediately clicking with its characters, concept, and music. This was a highly-anticipated game of mine, but I didn't get around to playing my backer copy until this year.

What I experienced in the end was something bigger than I expected.

UNBEATABLE has two halves: Arcade Mode and Story Mode. Arcade Mode is exactly what it says on the tin. Pick a song, pick a difficulty, and jam out. Rinse and repeat for however long you feel. Gameplay is very snappy and addicting, with two-lane rhythm gameplay you'd see out of titles like Muse Dash.

And we thankfully have an incredible selection of tunes here. Many are contributed by other composers, but UNBEATABLE's unique music is mainly contributed by the band "peak divide." And a lot of this music isn't gonna leave my head any time soon, shout-outs going to "WAITING," "MIRROR," and "BOOKEND SONG" for resonating with me very strongly.

This leaves me with UNBEATABLE's Story Mode to round out the whole package: following a young girl named Beat and her growing crew of friends/bandmates, gripping with their struggles both internal and external, plus a whole bunch of police crackdowns and musically-aligned monsters in-between.

Story Mode mixes UNBEATABLE's usual gameplay with overworld-crawling and a small variety of rhythm-based minigames. Some are fun, some feel like they barely hold together. But they never detract from the game's soul.

And...this is all the words I can use without doing a disserve to actually playing the game.

Because for all its faults, UNBEATABLE is a game with a LOUD, ambitious soul. One so real it feels like it's yearning to break out of the game. Every vocal sounds uttered from intimate experience, and every mechanic deliberately melding you into Beat's head. And all of it coalesces into something so...raw.

Just...just play it. Let your voice be loud.

(7/4/26) Rhythm Heaven Groove Keep the beat with a miracle star cast across 80+ games! From smashing cans to chatting with aliens, it's a whole new groove for Rhythm Heaven! Simple presentation, but the same ol' soul! Charming tunes and gameplay, with so much to do it could get exhausting!
After a 10-year wait since Megamix, I was immensely happy to see a brand new Rhythm Heaven. I'm just as well happy to see Groove take the series back to basics in terms of structure, with probably the series' most feature-extensive gameplay yet?

I was never a fan of how Megamix stuck a lot of padding between the player and the games, so taking the game structure back to its "stage-by-stage" GBA roots make Groove a snap to just jump in. Especially when you look at how much there is to do in Groove.

Every rhythm game has a sequel game; multiple layers of Perfect challenges; Drumming Lessons and Rhythm Toys; the multiplayer I unfortunately could not touch, but looks fun; TTS support for blind players; and Beatspell which I feel could justify branching off into its own game. There's a ton here for players who really want to dig into finding their rhythm.

As for the rhythm games themselves, a lot of them are great! Though some echo gameplay beats of older titles, which is just bound to happen after this series has existed for 20 years. Regardless, games like Soda Hop, Germ Aerobics, and Space Sentry are poised to become classics in my eyes. Music's also top-notch as always, with probably the biggest contribution of vocal songs in Rhythm Heaven history. Spanning multiple languages too!

The simple menus and small number of themed Remixes is understandably disappointing, but I found it not too different from the GBA game when I looked at the bigger picture. Rhythm Heaven art has always been pretty simple, so I don't think it bothered me too much in the end.

I am somewhat disappointed in the absence of Megamix's accuracy gauge and the Skill Stars; I feel they were fun ways to help train your rhythm. The single-player game also runs a little long in the tooth, and some sequels are a bit disappointing.

It doesn't beat out Fever as my favorite, but this is still a much-needed return to form for Rhythm Heaven!

Now please don't leave me again for 10 years please

(6/26/26) Star Fox (Switch 2) We need your help, Star Fox! Andross has declared war! ... Again. It's Star Fox 64, already a good game, now with additional game modes. And some cinematic embellishments that may or may not land for some players.
It's Star Fox 64.

There's not much else to say about this remake's core gameplay beyond that. It's the same old Star Fox 64 right down to game-feel and level layouts. I already love Star Fox 64, so I won't linger here.

The primary alteration in this Switch 2 remake is its cinematic presentation; not only has the script and voice acting in the game's levels been updated, but intermission cutscenes between them have been expanded upon to flesh out the story and worldbuilding.

Even if this has to be the fourth retread of the Andross plotline, I do greatly enjoy these cutscenes making the OG Star Fox team feel like disparate individuals learning to work together for the first time. And I think the primary cast of new voice actors do a great job! Though some of the bosses' acting doesn't quite stick the landing even beyond nostalgia for the N64 voice delivery.

"Star Fox '26" also excels at leading the player into the game's finer details. Not only are hidden objectives more easily conveyed, the new Challenge Mode also provides a list of missions per level in order to get more intimately familiar with the level design. Both of these also serve to unlock more worldbuilding for the game's Holoviewer, delving into even minute details about the Lylat System's enemies and technology.

Lastly, the game's multiplayer might be the most fun it's been since Assault? I would love more map variations, but it's still extremely hectic dogfighting action with fun power-ups. If you can get four friends into a voice call and coordinate as a squad, it's unreal amounts of fun.

Honestly, it's hard to sell this to someone who's played Star Fox 64 before - I bought it just to support the series' future. Not to mention you can access the entirety of NSO's N64 library for the same price, including Star Fox 64.

But this is definitely the version of the game with the most things to do. And with this kind of quality put in, I'd love to see Studio Velan take the helm on a new Star Fox game.

(6/19/26) The Amazing Digital Circus Welcome to the circus you can never leave! Thrown into wacky hijinks and existential dread, six humans-turned-cartoons try to make the most of a bad situation. Witty, heartfelt, an unapologetically raw. This animated marvel's a once-in-a-lifetime labor of love.
Coming out of the Last Act theater run, it's wonderful to see around three years of The Amazing Digital Circus come to fruition. Three years of watching these characters grow and the talent behind the show's production evolve.

Going back to earlier episodes makes the animation hard to swallow nowadays, but the Digital Circus team really learned over the years how to play with perspective and lighting in 3-D spaces. Making these CGI characters feel just as expressive as any 2-D classic. Paired with Goose's unique visual style, and you've got a show with an identity unlike anything else.

Above all though, I feel like Digital Circus is a show that meets the moment for people in terms of its writing. Yeah, the humor is witty and the characters are relatable. But during the three years of its production, it hits themes and plot beats that are very relevant during a period many viewers are living through tumultuous times.

Zooble's struggles with ambition and body dysphoria; Ragatha's wish to convey genuine kindness when it's easy to distrust; even Caine's desire to understand humanity and Jax's whole can of worms that I don't want to spoil here. With the circumstances of people's lives deteriorating and everyone feeling like they're spinning their wheels in place, it's hard not to see yourselves in at least one of these troubled people.

Yet Digital Circus still remains an ultimately optimistic show beyond even its bleakest moments. Reinforcing meaning in life through mutual support and communication between your peers.

My only regret is that not all character relationships can blossom by putting certain characters out of focus. I don't know if this is a symptom if the long downtimes between episodes, but characters like Zooble, Gangle, and Kinger do feel isolated from the cast at large.

Despite this though, I still feel Digital Circus is definitely the animated work of a generation. One that left a lasting impact on its viewers.

There's beauty in a stagnant life.

(6/4/26) Mina the Hollower A curse befalls Tenebrous Isle: monsters roam, and the light of the land's Spark Generators fades. Only a lone Hollower can restore them, her skills and loyalties tested. Shockingly dense world and flexible systems, Mina's a grand ol' time, even if it's a bit obtuse.
Mina the Hollower is Yacht Club Game's first original project after...12 years of Shovel Knight oh god. Taking common gameplay elements from across the same action-adventure game cloth like Zelda II, Castlevania, and Dark Souls. All splashed in a Victorian-era horror paint job.

True to its inspirations, this is NOT an easy game. The initial trek to and around the central hub of Ossex is rough. But Mina the Hollower encourages you to get lost in its world in any means that's comfortable: You can tackle the six main levels in any order you wish, with subtle nudging from the in-game newspaper on recommended destinations.

Beyond that, some form of reward's hidden in every errant corner of the map, and every new screen is distinct in layout. So not only is it easy to know where you are, curiosity often rewards you with money, upgrades, or Trinkets for going off the beaten path.

It helps that Tenebrous Isle is a lovely setting, its major locations hitting familiar horror tropes and themes with lively pixel art: A countryside town gone cultishly mad, a haunted and bone-chilling mountain range, even an observatory verging on cosmic horror. Character interactions make this bleak world feel even more alive, alongside Jake Kaufman's unbelievably catchy tunes with guest compositions by Yuzo Koshiro.

On my end, I found combat engaging after internalizing the burrow mechanic and experimenting with the Trinket selection, with at least two slots reserved for the Bell of Grace and Plasma Jug. And the game gave me plenty of time to get used to the plasma mechanic where healing hardly became an issue for me. The game also comes with a HUGE list of modifiers to make the game easier/harder according to your wishes.

Through and through, Mina the Hollower is an old-school game with modern sensibilities. I really wish the demo were still available so players could get a better initial impression of the game. But for me, this is a game all about getting lost, and I LOVE getting lost.

(5/21/26) Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo To save his auntie's family business from corrupt business tycoons, Pipit embarks on a sprawling urban adventure full of yo-yo slingin' action! Zelda-like gameplay with creatively evolving mechanics, and a real passion for the GBA! This one's a hidden gem!
Under the hood, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo knows it's a Zelda-like and proudly wears that fact. But its central identity infuses its gameplay so vividly, working in tandem with its presentation to make it *feel* truly original.

Pipistrello's gameplay cycle focuses on its titular yoyo: you use it for combat, puzzles, exploration... Practically everything. And every major dungeon introduces brand new yoyo techniques, extrapolating on them through dungeon *and* overworld progression. This eventually snowball-effects into combining multiple techniques over the course of the game for incredibly satisfying brain-teasers and battles.

The gameplay loop is supplemented by upgrades that you take a loan to pay off on. As well as a Badge system - wholesale lifted off of Paper Mario - that can be used to fine tune gameplay properties. They're cool to mess around with, but most Badges were pretty superfluous in my playthrough, as I found most benefit just sticking with the ones that affect gaining money.

The story's nothing too complex, and injects enough lighthearted character into the adventure. But what helps bring it to life is Pipistrello's presentation. Every pixel in the city and instrument choice in the music loudly screams love for the dev team's home country, and recalls a nostalgia for the Game Boy Advance. You can even display the game on a virtual handheld in-game if you truly want to sell the experience. I didn't use it, but it's a charming addition.

Not many things brought me out of the ride, but I will admit a few corners of the overworld could've benefited from a taxi point for fast-travel. I also think the Gallineiros District ends on a bit of a flat note, ending on a mini-game rather than a proper boss fight.

But I really don't have much negative say otherwise! Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a gem of a game, and I'm hoping it'll lead to future opportunities for Pocket Trap!

(5/11/26) MOUSE: P.I. For Hire A simple missing-persons case for detective Jack Pepper unfolds into exposing the holes in Mouseburg's fragile order. Provided the city doesn't make Swiss cheese outta him first. Superb presentation and serviceable gunplay, plagued by a bevy of performance issues.
Watching trailers for this game, I initially thought it was gonna be more traditionally noir like the films I saw in college. Actually playing MOUSE: P.I. though, the noir elements are more an aesthetic choice than anything else. But it's a darn good aesthetic; they got the music and grayscale contrast just right for cinematic purposes. And plenty of options to filter the sound and graphics to decide how "film vintage" you want your experience. But as far as writing goes, it's more tongue-in-cheek cartoonish at times than routinely tragic for film noir.

The writing's not necessarily bad though. The tone is set pretty early on in the game, so it gives you plenty of time to get used to the game's cartoonish world. The banter between characters is very snappy and witty for films of the time, and I don't really mind how anachronistic some of the reference jokes are. Though some of Jack's one-liners can be a bit excessive.

There's some fairly serious moments, nailed due to great vocal performances from the likes of Fred Tatasciore, Camry Grimes, and Frank Todaro to name a few. Troy Baker as Jack Pepper is who you're hearing for most of the game though. And his performance is good, but it's a bittersweet taste considering he's a less-than-pleasant person.

As for the game itself, gunplay and platforming feel good to control, though I don't think it utilizes all its tools properly. Particularly with abilities and weapons that come too late in the game to be fully-realized, and how even though many of the weapons are fun to use, any problem can be solved with the Boomstick and James Gun.

It was a mostly pleasant experience when I wasn't running into an unfortunate number of performance issues. Music not playing when it should; sidequest objectives and proper graphics not loading; and frame chugging due to playing on Switch 2, just to name a few.

MOUSE: P.I. for Hire has a lot of love I can feel put into it, I just think it needed more time in the oven to be truly great.
