Harry Truman’s favorite thing to tell Medal of Honor at ceremonies was, "I would much rather have that Medal around my neck than to be President of the United States."

This is exactly why, when I lived in LA, I had a hard default “No” vote on all ballot initiatives: I didn’t feel qualified to form an opinion on them and I would only vote “Yes” if I had a strong opinion.

Gardening question for anyone in the NYC metro area: Are you having a tough year for tomatoes? I've had zero come in so far, just a few non-ripening green ones on the plants. Could it be a wildfire smoke thing? I remember hearing that the reduction in sunlight can really mess up growth.

Your logical fallacies keep proliferating... I never told you how *I* felt on 9/11 so keep your speculation to yourself and my name out of your mouth.

Good for you. Please pick up your purity test trophy on the way out. But not understanding what the rest of the country was listening to and feeling at the moment is the ahistorical ignorance you choose.

This is 100% not how the day unfolded. There was a long period in which the number of planes were not know. And the media was loudly proclaiming that there may be more planes as well as falsely claiming that there other planes had hit, like the State Department.

Gabriel Snyder @gabrielsnyder.com · 07/08/2026
The live TV news coverage was a mass PTSD-inducing event. The morning started with reports (many of them wrong obviously) that more planes could be hitting more places. Then a wallpaper of exploding towers. It was “War of the Worlds”-style mass hysteria except with actual planes crashes.

one of the video clips I remember watching on the late news the night of 9/11 was people fleeing a skyscraper in downtown Memphis… it really drove home how far the fear had spread that day

... and fwiw, the AI Concierge on OpenTable can't answer that query either

And as it happens, ChatGPT's top recommendation for this query has not been nominated for a Beard Award — nor does it have any open tables available at 7pm this Friday, as per, well, OpenTable.

One of the things that perplexes me about the AI business discourse is that people regularly claim that AI can do things that anyone who uses AI know it cannot do — and the CEO of OpenTable should be the first to know that ChatGPT cannot tell you whether a restaurant has open reservations.

By now most people have discovered the joy of asking Al highly specific logistical questions. What's the best route to drive from Detroit to New York this weekend dodging thunderstorms and without losing cell service? Or, as Debby Soo, CEO of OpenTable, recently suggested of a typical ChatGPT restaurant search: "I'm looking for a seafood restaurant that's celiac- friendly, but has been nominated for a James Beard, in Boston, this Friday at seven."

All of this has fwiw made me an adherent of the “long 90s” theory that posits contiguous era that spans 1989 end of the Cold War to 2008’s financial crisis.

Now, I’m rewatching Breaking Bad and I’m on Season 3 (which premiered March 21, 2010) and it still feels like the “last great 1990s TV show.” There are no smartphones for one. But it feels like everything Vince Gilligan drew on was at least 10 years old.

When I last rewatched The Wire, I remember thinking it felt like such a cultural artifact of the 90s even though it aired in the 2000s. (And not just because it’s ghetto gangster page tech was way out of date by the time it aired.)

It’s March 3, 2004. One will become one of the most polarizing figures on earth. The other’s acting career peaks as an Apple TV sci-fi show villain after a long line of Cadillac ads. Yes, Apple makes TV now. It’s sort of the new HBO. Oh, right… they go further than Oz and Sex and the City then die.

Tbh, I am happy to watch these S1 and S2 episodes, but it feels a bit like prequel fan service. I’m not feeling like I missed anything that changes my view of the show. A lot of (sometimes tedious imho) set up.

Weird thing I recently learned: I had not seen all of “Breaking Bad.” I remembering watching the pilot and being uninterested. Heard later, I think mid-second season that it got really good and started watching, religiously. But, as I’ve learned, I never went back and caught up.

I've never seen Beltway pundit elite belief stated so nakedly, even if it's long been the operative view: as David Brooks wrote today, the primary purpose of the Democratic Party ought to be fighting the left and stymying its agenda. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
"To encourage my Democratic friends, I would remind them of this fact: The Democratic Party became great not while pushing against the right. It became great while pushing against the left. Democrats can argue against Republicans in their sleep. They have a comfortable set of moves they can go to: trickle-down economics, tax
cuts for the rich."

I visited Mexico City last summer for the first time and I can’t tell you how badly the altitude kicked my ass. It all looks flat but it’s all higher than 7,000 feet. It’s insane. To put it perspective, the Azteca is more than 2.000 feet higher than Denver’s fearsome Mile High Stadium.

Remember when, way back in 2025, one of the savvy takes making the Beltway rounds was that Democratic chances for retaking the House would dissipate in a wave of pro-Trump patriotism inspired by America 250?

Defining “working class” by education is a choice here, one that’s divorced from the realities of a largely post-industrial economy, and reads mostly as a lazy way to sneer at people the author simply does not like www.nytimes.com/2026/06/30/o...

A very brief history of the United States: In 1776, Americans attested that "all men are created equal" and have been arguing about who that broad statement *shouldn't* apply to ever since.

Exactly. The greatest weakness of the urban Democratic machines is that they are built on voter suppression. That makes them easier to take down with voter turnout.

Fwiw, I did not see any questions about the approach to renewing my WaPo subscription I've been using for years now: Cancel the auto-renew and then take the "will you reconsider?" offer on the next screen that's 33% of their list price.

I always like checking what questions media outlets put in their subscriber surveys. Today, the Washington Post is asking if I'm less likely to renew my subscription because "The writers/journalists I am most interested in have left The Washington Post"

In fact, my standard answer for when people ask me why I don’t have a southern accent is: “While me and most of my friends were born and raised in Nashville, none of our parents were. They all came from places like Cincinnati.”

I grew up 15 minutes from Middletown and later lived near there for another 15 years. To be sure, the Appalachian migration in our area was significant, but Southern accents are rare.

If you’re wondering why this bothers me: like Vance, I grew up poor and somehow ended up at Yale. I can empathize with him feeling out of place there. But I did grow up in the South (though never really had an accent) and know a southern accent when I hear one.

…and not only can I not find any audio of JD Vance ever speaking with a southern accent, I haven’t been able to find an example of *anyone* else in Middletown, Ohio, speaking with a southern accent (I watched a bunch of local news clips).

In Hillbilly Elegy (haven’t cracked Communion yet) JD Vance recounts over and over the indignities he faced for speaking with a southern accent. Except, he didn’t grow up in the south, he grew up outside Cincinnati…

I have a feeling that a lot of people shocked that Spencer Pratt won’t be the next LA mayor also thought Andrew Cuomo could win as NYC Mayor as the pro-Israel, Trump-friendly candidate. Cluelessness and out-of-touchness in the national political discourse continues to skyrocket.

My CitiBike membership is about to renew and I think it might be the year to cut the cord. After lowering the e-bike speed and raising per minute prices, a trip even with membership is touching $10, which is ridiculous to me. If I really miss e-biking, I think it might time to invest in one.
