One of my favorite things about books are how they can be a medium that transcends just the words on the page. I've always been fond of blackout poetry, and I thought to myself, what better opportunity to practice than on my own novel! Not the worst for a first attempt~

Somehow this little guy has become one of my most popular characters, despite the fact that Marcescent is not, in fact, about a wagon fueled by the soul of a spider. It is a darling thing, though. 🕷

Seven lanterns are on the back cover of the dust jacket. Six are unlit, dark, each with its own unique design to represent the bearer that once carried it. The seventh is the only one with a spark left, falling along the edge, no longer tethered and moments from breaking.

The skeletons of Marcescent's covers aren't just any assembly of bones. Instead, they glow with an emberous material known as sunstone. These are the bones of the Titans, powerful gods that rivaled the Night Gods once upon a time. This one on the back of the cover is my favorite~ 💀🖤

The dust jacket's expression captures a young Cassin so well. The cracks in his armor, everything breaking into pieces like he's about to fall apart entirely. I love the faint glimmer of golden specks between the seams. The golden lines shining from his palms.

In Marcescent, electricity isn't the sole source of power. Most things run on spirits, whether that's the necromatic, metal wagons in the shape of animals or lights flickering with bottled ghosts. In this world of night, color is a vivid storm everywhere you look.

I narrowed down the most important songs that helped inspire the characters of Marcescent~ Full playlist in bio 🎶 Video background music: "Southern Gothic" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 creativecommons.org/licenses/by/...

The last of Marcescent's side characters that need a notable mention, Gell. A hunter from Opherion Forest and the first of Merric's clergy. Gell is all about tough love. Need a hug? No you don't, you need a knife. Need advice? A knife would probably fix your problem.

Gabriel Locke @gabelocke.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

The second of our favorite side characters in Marcescent, Celene: an ethically dubious scientist with a criminal background. If only her history was the worst of her secrets. Storms fill her blood, but something darker also lurks inside... and it's not just her crush on a certain noblewoman.

000

Gabriel Locke @gabelocke.bsky.social · 25/08/2026

While Marcescent's main characters might be Cassin and Merric, that doesn't mean that its side characters are any less loved. The first of the three most important women in Merric's life is Liene, a noblewoman known for her poise, voice, and beauty.

Marcescent's fatalistic priest. Merrickeris is guided by a Night God slumbering at the core of the planet. Prophetic dreams guide him to Cassin's path the same way a meteor passes through the sky. Fiery at first, and then colliding with cataclysmic violence. Both forever changed by the impact.

Meet Marcescent's main actor, Cassin. He's the only human left in a world of monsters, and even he'd say that he stretches the definition these nights. Cassin is stuck in a cycle by the Night Goddess, Fate, feeding on the souls of those unlucky enough to make a deal with him.

000

Gabriel Locke @gabelocke.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

Between hiding from Night Gods, traveling through souls, and being dragged through the designs of a dragon priest, Cassin can no longer keep running. Hero or villain? Live or die? Bring back the sun or let the world crumble away beneath the Night? Fate's ready to make him decide, one way or another.

Marcescent is explores what happens when immortality has gone on for too long. When a hero falls into something far more grey, and a prodigal mind no longer works as it should. People say that history is written by the victors. In Marcescent, it drowns with the few who remain. October 1st, 2026.

Here is Marcescent's second cover~ This is the hardcover's dust jacket, featuring this absolutely stunning and heartbreaking image of our hero's downfall. Beneath this dust jacket, the paperback cover will be featured. Cover Art by @altorina.bsky.social

Marcescent will feature two different covers~ The first is the paperback and ebook cover. I'm utterly enamored with it ✨. This cover will also feature beneath the dust jacket of the hardcover version. Cover Art designed by @altorina.bsky.social

The words paperback and ebook are written beside an image of a book cover. The front of the cover features a golden skeleton holding a lantern, surrounded by smoke. The back cover features a spider-like wagon moving through mountain peaks with stars overhead. There is a stained glass frame surrounding both. The cover reads Marcescent by Gabriel Locke.
