Happy #BillandTed day! Couple years ago I got the opportunity to produce the animated opening for the Netflix film #OurLittleSecret directed by og B&T director (and great guy) Stephen Herek. I suggested we plant a tribute / easter egg. Not sure if anyone ever caught it. 1min in!

☢️#256, Surf Nazis Must Die, 1987. History’s greatest titled b-movie fumbles on execution. A few quotables and a fun revenge subplot don’t quite salvage from the randomly edited lo-budget plotless stinker we are ultimately presented with. But still…great damn title. 2/5 ☢️

☢️#255, The Cabin in the Woods, 2011. While the snarky meta-humor may offend some horror purists, ultimately this is a good natured tribute deftly juxtaposing bureaucratic mundanity with nightmare fueled thrills. Be prepared wear out that pause button in the third act! 4/5 ☢️

☢️#254 , Black Crab , 2022. Trading #Aliens for ice skates #NoomiRapace is a mother on a mission in a #postapocalyptic war zone where the only way out is across miles of literal thin ice. Haunting and brutal with gorgeous arctic cinematography. 3.5/5 ☢️

☢️#253 After the End, 2017. Why go on a epic #postapocalyptic journey when a light jaunt on a ten speed bicycle will do? Impressively executed on a shoestring budget, this coming of age tale is refreshing in its simplicity and mellow vibe, but ultimately a bit too timid. 3/5 ☢️

☢️#252 The Birds, 1963. The cinematic equivalent of a schoolyard bully pulling pigtails, #Hitchcock thrills in torturing his advance spurning starlet #TippiHenden. Nonetheless a damn fun watch. And as far as the #apocalyptic ambiguity, I’m calling this one for #TheBirds. 4/5 ☢️

☢️#251 Robot Holocaust, 1987. Despite adorable rubber suits (blowup doll C-3PO anyone?) and laughable creature FX, this #postapocalyptic #scifi with #fantasy trappings is a slog. #Sobaditsgood in its own right, I still suspect I should’ve opted for the #MST3K treatment. 1.5/5 ☢️

☢️#250 Moonfall, 2022. You would think after making the same movie a hundred times, Roland Emmerich might pull off a coup and deliver a good #scifi disaster film. No. Same shit different day. I did like #GOT alumni John Bradley enough to warrant a horrible sequel. 2/5 ☢️

☢️#249 Robot Wars, 1993. A spiritual successor to #RobotJox, mostly in that we’re forced to wait through the entire 2nd act to get to some robot on robot action. Smooth stop motion and detailed models are great looking, but ultimately underwhelmingly used. #RobotTussle 2.5/5 ☢️

☢️#248 Things to Come, 1936. Not even the #apocalypse can destroy the transatlantic accent in this otherwise enjoyable #HGWells #scifi film. Amazingly ambitious practical/optical effects propel a multi-generational epic whose scope ultimately is a bit distancing. 3.5/5 ☢️

☢️#247 Mad Max Exposed, 2022. Bare bones doc featuring interesting blokes with interesting yarns. Focusing almost entirely on the stunts of the original #MadMax  - I can’t really complain, other than its shortness. Subtitles on if you don’t have the Aussie ear. 4/5 ☢️

☢️#246. Jung_E, 2023. Convoluted world building and tonal inconsistencies are ultimately overshadowed by an intimate and well paced sci-fi story. Fun CG design and sporadically intense action. Sadly the lead actor Kang Soo-yeon passed before the release of the film. 3.5/5 ☢️

☢️#245 Driving Force, 1989. #FlashGordon and #DaisyDuke battle homicidal tow truck operators lead by a not-quite-Swayze (Patricks brother Don) in the all-mostly #postapocalyptic wasteland. Fairly tame vehicle stunts. Jaw droppingly painful dialog. Plus side? Its short. 1.5/5 ☢️

In poking around for my #WaroftheWorlds review, I did a further dive on Brazilian artist Henrique Alvim Corrêa (1876-1910), illustrator of the 1903 book edition. The more I see of these, the more I love them. A darkly humorous take, expertly crafted with dynamic compositions. Amazing stuff!

☢️#244. 5 Years After the Fall, 2016. I have a crater sized soft-spot for zero budget filmmaking. If you don’t, you may want to skip this mostly single location amateur production that despite its limitations, manages to pull off a few moments of cinematic legitimacy. 2/5 ☢️

☢️#243. War of the Worlds, 1953. Undeniably quaint by contemporary standards, this granddaddy of all blockbuster alien invasion flicks is still worth your attention. Rapturous technicolor displays an array of beautifully designed props, models, and sets. Total #classic. 3.5/5 ☢️

☢️#242. FreeJack, 1992. If only the entire movie was as entertaining as #MiickJagger’s constantly dripping delivery. Alas we are left with a charmless Estevez to lead us through a endless barrage of inevitable betrayals, flat one-liners, and #scifi wonk. Has its moments. 3/5 ☢️

☢️#241. When the Wind Blows, 1986. Devastating charm aches through every moment of this beautifully animated nightmare as naive countryside retirees slowly succumb to the effects of nuclear fallout. Tread lightly if not in high spirits or you want to maintain them. Music #DavidBowie #RogerWaters 5/5☢️

☢️#240. Prayer of the Rollerboys, 1990. Bleach blonde rollerblading racists rule over a #dystopian sepia-toned near-future LA. Hilarious 90s crappiness hovers constantly, but somehow it’s not enough to maintain enthusiasm throughout the runtime. #CoreyHaim #PatriciaArquett. 2/5☢️

☢️#239. The Running Man, 1987. Arnie is a contestant in a deadly dystopian game show hosted by #familyfeud’s #RichardDawson. As smart/prescient a social satire as it is silly. Loaded to the brim with non-stop one liners and macho brutality. A must-watch action #classic 4/5☢️

☢️#238. Warriors of Future, 2022. Occasionally spectacle is enough. Tons of dynamic CGI paired with boiler plate character beats and plot. If you’re looking for something profound, look elsewhere, but if you’re in the mood for over-the-top action - bon appétit! 3/5☢️

☢️#237. Æon Flux, 2006. Some things should never be adapted. Fans of the #LiquidTelevision spawned animated source material learned this the hard way. Through no real fault of #CharlizeTheron nor the clear talent present behind the camera, it sadly just doesn’t work. 2.5/5☢️

☢️#236. Fido, 2006. The great #BillyConnolly is man’s (or boy’s) best friend in an alternate 50s reality where humanity has incorporated the living dead into day-to-day living. Fantastic cast. Laffs and gore galore. A sharp social satire with just the right amount of bite. 4/5☢️

☢️#235. Nemesis, 1992. Guns! Skin! Cyborgs! Suits with huge shoulder pads! A 90s-kid late night cable dream come true. Inventive camera work and fun stunts are periodically bogged down by impenetrably generic dialog and even worse performances. An #AlbertPyun classic RIP. 3/5☢️

☢️#234. Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto, 2018. A crudely (or masterfully?) illustrated post apocalyptic rock-opera that delivers mutated beasts, brutal violence, robots, hardcore sex, and rockin tunes. Not for everyone but hit the stupid/smart humor ratio perfectly for me. 4/5☢️

☢️#233. Mutant Chronicles, 2009. Dopey dialog spewing retro-soldiers battle pointy armed mutants in consistently obvious green screen shots. Bad cgi shows off some nice WW1/steampunk designs. I’m assuming it’s far more fun to play the RPG it was based on. #RonPearlman 1.5/5☢️

☢️#232. IO, 2019. A young scientist at the tail-end of a planetary mass exodus meets a subdued #AnthonyMackie. There’s #postapocalyptic atmosphere and nice characterization, but a lack of conflict makes this a slow ride. In keeping, the “climax” involves a hot air balloon. 2/5☢️

☢️#231. The Last Chase, 1981. In a #dystopian future where driving has been outlawed, former stock car champion #LeeMajors and his whiz kid sidekick are pursued cross country by the endlessly entertaining #BurgessMeredith via jet fighter. Slower than it sounds but charming. 3/5☢️

☢️#230. The Matrix Resurrections, 2021. Worth existing. Though fraught with cluttered action and frequent cringe - it still has interesting ideas and a strong singular vision. I’ll take that over the standard homogeneous Hollywood drip pan any-day. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#229. Don’t Look Up, 2021. Satire is at its finest when it’s nearly indistinguishable from reality, and this star studded #AdamMcKay joint is no exception. A frightening look into how shortsightedness, cult of personality, and hubris could easily doom our world. Haha? 3.5/5☢️

☢️#228. Anna and the Apocalypse, 2018. While the urge to FFW the second any character broke into song never passed, charming characters and inventive holiday themed #zombie set pieces still made for an enjoyable watch. And hey, a couple songs weren’t half bad. Murry Xmas! 3.5/5☢️

☢️#227. Kingdom of the Spiders, 1977. Perpetual horndog #CaptainKirk takes a turn as a spider squashing cowboy in this nature-on-the-rampage #creaturefeature. A slow burn leads to a suspenseful second half full of creepy crawly gags. Fun and sometime silly #cult #classic. 3/5☢️

☢️#226. Cooties, 2014. A talented ensemble stars in this teachers VS kinder-zombies horror/comedy. Though it’s neither very scary nor exceptionally funny, with your enjoyment hinging on how hilarious you find violence involving annoying kids. You’d think I’d have loved it! 3/5☢️

☢️#225. Stake Land, 2010. A standout in the PA #vampire sub genre, with quality low budget filmmaking, fun kills, and gore galore. While feeling episodic rather than having a singular narrative arc, its still a well paced solid watch. Also #TopGun’s own #KellyMcGillis! 3.5/5☢️

☢️#224. Goodbye World, 2013. An unlikable group of reunited college frenemies wait out the #apocalypse in an off-grid cabin. Annoying dialog is performed adequately. Anemic plot. Skip unless desperate for a non-#entourage #AdrianGrenier performance. Aw yeah-ya - aw yeah-ya! 2/5☢️

☢️#223. Finch, 2021. Everybody’s favorite uncle #TomHanks, braves the apocalyptic wasteland with Wilson the desert island volleyball turned marginally annoying sentient robot. Full of atmosphere and humane charm. Those looking for action should probably look elsewhere. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#222. A.I., 2001. Initially developed for screen by #StanleyKubrick, but completed as a posthumous tribute by longtime friend #StevenSpielberg. And that’s exactly what it feels like - a weird splicing of two master directors with distinctly differing tastes. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#221. Color Out of Space, 2019. #RichardStanley returns to the directors chair for the first time since famously being ejected from #TheIslandofDrMoreau in this #LoveCraftian #psychedelic #horror. Uneven, derivative, with a heaping spoonful of #NicolasCage goofiness. 3/5☢️

☢️#220. Turkey Shoot, 1982. The privileged hunt the poor in this #dystopian near-future nightmare. While slow to get started, this quintessential #Ozploitation flick proves to be a beautifully shot social satire with a wicked mean streak and plenty of over-the-top gore. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#219. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956. With an alarming propensity for naming townspeople by their first and last name, hero doctor and perpetual flirt #KevinMccarthy roots out (sorry) commies one allegorical pod at a time. A bit dated, but a fun #scifi #classic. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#217. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1978. Director #PhilipKaufman employs a dizzying array of experimental filmmaking techniques designed to keep you in a state of unrelenting tension and paranoia. A fitting approach to this rare example of a successful remake. #Classic 5/5☢️

☢️#216. Elysium, 2016. The lofty goal of taking on classism (if a bit on the nose) succumbs to a sloppy narrative and odd creative left turns in this #MattDamon starring action #scifi. Still a visual treat with successfully “weighted” looking CG robots and mech action. 3.5/5 ☢️

☢️#215. Survival of the Dead, 2009. Zombie fishing and horse eating. While not a highpoint in the #oftheDead series, there’s enough wit, charm, and clever gags to make this, #GeorgeRomero’s final film, a worthy entry. It almost makes up for the abysmal #DiaryoftheDead. 3/5☢️

☢️#214. How it Ends, 2021. A litany of comedic celebrities guide a woman and her corporeal inner child through a lifetime of therapy sessions in their final day on earth. Sound insightful and funny? Sometimes it truly is. But it’s mostly a rudderless drag. 2/5☢️

☢️#213. World War Z, 2013. Pushing #ragezombies to the inevitable breaking point of believability (and beyond), this visceral thrill ride is full of action, gore, and most importantly rugged #BradPitt handsomeness. All in all a total mess, but plenty of fun nonetheless. 3.5/5☢️

☢️#212. 10 Cloverfield Lane, 2016. The debatably best of the #Cloverfield anthology-of-diminishing-returns has only a tangential connection to the first film - souring audiences on the false branding/marketing scheme. Fortunately #JohnGoodman makes one hell of a monster. 4/5☢️
