#TROPRewatch S1E7 I love the way the show leans into how the Elves are embalmers, trying to arrest time and preserve the world as it is. Using mithril to do that is an odd choice, but overall, the Tolkien themes of Death and Immortality are there!

#TROPRewatch S1E3 I love Númenor. Can’t wait to see Sauron back there in the next seasons! I dislike that the Númenorean men have beards, though (same complaint as for the films). But overall, the architecture, costumes, ships, Hall of Lore—it’s so beautifully done.

I’ve read LOTR dozens of times, but after having read all the legendarium this year (and watched RoP), reading through The Mirror of Galadriel just hits different now, in all the best ways. How Tolkien invented her on the spot yet poured so much history and lore into her & that chapter is amazing.❤️

Currently reading Vol 2 of Tolkien’s poems, alongside Carpenter’s biography (also glad that I recently read Tolkien’s Letters)—together they give a good timeline to understand where he was when and what he was writing at the time. Need to read Shippey’s Road to M-E next. #Tolkien #Booksky

Text from The Fall of Númenor:
“But Ar-Pharazón was not yet deceived, and it came into his mind that, for the better keeping of Sauron and of his oaths of fealty, he should be brought to Númenor, there to dwell as a hostage for himself and all his servants in Middle-Earth. To this Sauron assented as one constrained, yet in his secret thought he received it gladly, for it chimed indeed with his desire. ‘This is a hard doom,’ said Sauron, ‘but great kings must have their will,’ and he submitted as one under compulsion, concealing his delight; for things had fallen out according to his design.”

As a person of faith, this paragraph from The Nature of Middle-Earth hits like a ton of bricks. Even the Valar screwed up, trusting themselves to make decisions without consulting Eru, and in trying to do good, actually caused a lot of bad stuff to happen instead. #Tolkien #Booksky

Paragraph reads: This is said because the invitation given to the Eldar to remove to Valinor and live unendangered by Melkor was not in fact according to the design of Eru. It arose from anxiety, and it might be said from failure in trust of Eru, from anxiety and fear of Melkor, and the decision of the Eldar to accept the invitation was due to the overwhelming effect of their contact, while still in their inexperienced youth, with the bliss of Aman and the beauty and majesty of the Valar. It had disastrous consequences in diminishing the Elves of Middle-Earth and so depriving Men of a large measure of the intended help and teaching of their “elder brethren”, and exposing them more dangerously to the power and deceits of Melkor. Also, since it was in fact alien to the nature of the Elves to live under protection in Aman, and not (as was intended) in Middle-Earth, one consequence was the revolt of the Noldor.
