its nice to have the same kinda appreciation because i know its limitations and how much it takes to make the thing sound like that if youre just hacking the firmware with ai to add clones of other synths or whatever, i feel like youre robbing the instrument of its “soul” a little

maybe unpopular opinion but like if i watch someone playing a guitar, that’s impressive to me because i know the amount of skill that takes, and can tell you had to practice to get there and similarly, if i watch someone performing on an hardware electronic instrument…

none of this relates to all the ai firmware hack stuff going around lately, i’m just hand writing a file converter that misuses device quirks like god intended

writing a rekordbox to octatrack loader because who needs jogwheels when you can have sisyphean suffering some of the loop points are still a little off because of mp3 encoding being weird but, it’s just working and your cues show up on the trig keys? holy shit?

its main action button cracked open (it’s nearly 17yo so it did well) and while it was shorting out it locked the device in a weird boot menu. had to harvest a button from a synth i don’t have to play live on this month like an organ transplant lmao

i caved and grabbed an octatrack because after my recent machinedeum set i really wished i could have crossfaded between songs and it just does that so yay!

i kinda am liking the arranger tbh

fyris @fyrisme.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
the "compile" process goes thru and creates a set of queries needed for any implied information you didn't provide (default pattern lengths, which kits are needed, etc), and then goes back and forth with the device to jump around and pull out any missing data over midi

fyris @fyrisme.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
working on an update for sm that takes elektron arranger data and presents it in an editable assembly-like syntax where loops and jumps are done with text labels, letting you copy sections between songs and shuffle things around without broken references :)

sorry i fell into a hole and made like 16 prototypes of max for live devices in a week, hopefully should have a bunch of them online soon :)

i do worry that the things i make will be buried under the firehose of new tools with technically more features etc, but i don’t think id get even 1% the satisfaction from someone sending me things they made with my software if i didn’t actually put in the effort to build it all myself :3

i rly miss the parts of videos where people who made things would usually be itching to explain how they solved interesting problems they ran into and show off cool solutions, but there’s a lot less of that now, most “i made some software” content ive seen lately now feels just kinda like an ad idk

been told i need to learn how to dj, they didn’t tell me i couldnt make my own software and use whatever weird hardware i like managed to fit 2 decks, lots of fx, playlist browsing and loading, and my custom hotcue system for ableton into this one controller with a bunch of controls to spare >:3

gosh you know it’s getting serious when you gotta port your stuff to a native app surprised by how less painful trying out rust has been this time around, libraries actually exist now :o

Wavetangle update! I totally redesigned the parameter panel, you can type things like note names, musical durations, and maths expressions into the boxes, modulation got an overhaul, and there's new gradient cables to show type conversion :D

do they just add a tone of harmonics, sculpt them, and still call it a sine wave? “i can turn this existing painting into anything! step one: paint the whole canvas white…”

Ive been using the app I'm building to chop and rearrange samples pseudo-randomly and it's super fun! Highly recommend :o

Damn, they literally have *everyones* music in a folder and their machines are still too tasteless to ever do a cool sample chop

By the way, wavetangle has also been a full on synth this whole time... It contextually blends buffer-based offline processing and real-time synthesis based on how you patch The next update will feature knob blocks for better hands on control over the real-rime side of things :D

i kinda see writing code as an artistic endeavour in itself, i find it really fun to think through and create elegant solutions to things, outsourcing that defeats the point to me but even outside that, it’s absurd to me that vibe coders often just don’t understand how their projects even work…

Currently yellow ports and cables are expressions that get calculated for each scope and stay static (you can put them in loops and re-run many times per render). Green ports and cables carry "signals" that run at audio rate. You can patch expressions into signals but not backwards right now!

fyris @fyrisme.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
You can't quite generate audio straight from maths expressions yet if that's what you want to try doing, but I'm working on how to get that performant enough to keep the web audio api happy! Would absolutely love if it could do bytebeat-ish things....

Fun fact: Wavetangle has support for audio rate modulation, maths functions, arrays, and randomness :)

Still a lot of work to do, but just pushed a day 1 update that improves the UI a little in some places, and enables the documentation page listing all the blocks!
