Mr Lamores beckoned a footman from the foyer to collect Nellen’s things, and the three of them ascended the curving steps. The clock tick, tick, ticked along with every footstep. As Mr Lamores led him down the west wing, Nellen slowed his pace in front of every gilded-frame painting. Along the right side of the hallway were portraits; One, a royal woman with yellow hair and a nose like a finches beak; the next, a younger woman, stern, with dark hair, dark eyes, and dark dress; third, a portrait of Raith Lamores. His likeness was captured rather well in oils, his head held high, looking down upon his admirer from the other side of the varnish. The artist had taken great care to render each and every freckle, and Nellen nearly started counting them, following their trails across his cheek and around his jaw, until they disappeared beneath his frilled collar. He wore a Corraini style frock coat in a similar fashion to the one he donned now, only much more ornate, woven from brocades and gilded with intricate embroidery across the neck and lapel. Where the other portraits were straight-faced, there was an ever-so-subtle grin pulling at the corner of Mr Lamores’ mouth.

“Are you expected?” spoke the silhouette. The voice was smooth, and lilted on its vowels, and it was masculine, young. Its question was posed with a tone of disinterest, or inconvenience, that could only come from a malcontented twenty-something. When Nellen’s eyes adjusted to the light, he could make out the visage of his greeter: indeed, a man no greater than twenty-five or twenty-six stood before him, leaning against the inner edge of the door. His color was a warm brown, though lighter than Nellen’s own, and with each flare of the fireplace Nellen could see the spots and speckles that littered every visible inch of his skin. They spread across his cheeks, so dense in places they appeared like spots on a fawn; a singular dark mark sat high on his cheekbone, and one on his chin; some sparse few freckles were on his pink lips, bow-shaped and pulled taut. His hair was straw-colored, brushed away from his face and resting lazily on the tops of his shoulders.

Nellen sketched furiously.

Sat on his bedsheets, legs folded, with his parchment atop the flat edge of his traveling case, he sketched that slanted grin, the short nose and easy eyes; his light hair, pin straight, except where it curled up against his shoulders. He smudged in the blush across his cheeks before sharpening his charcoal to a fine point, meticulously placing each freckle, every single one he managed to count. Along his jaw, down his thin neck—until there was no more sketch for them to follow. Nellen roughed in the shape of his collarbones, his shoulders—a pure imagination of whatever existed under that square-ish Corraini coat, but it was not hard for Nellen to make an approximation. Raith was lean. He was shorter than Nellen by nearly a head’s height, even with his heeled boots that clacked everywhere he stepped. He had sketched men of Raith’s stature before, with delicate ribs and a waist small enough to grasp.

How terribly indulgent. How indubitably inappropriate.

Another. He flipped to a clean page and lined the shape of his face with the broad side of the charcoal. He filled in the shadow of his brow, the slight slant of cheekbone; his bow-shaped lips, a pout, bitten between his teeth as Nellen noticed his wont to do. He was looking straight on, straight at Nellen—and a guilt overcame him as he carved out the sparkle in each iris. Who was he to render this man, a near complete stranger, in such a way as this? To steal his visage and create a thing of pure lust, a thing to keep all to himself, to stare at, and to dream of? It was selfish, dishonest.

And it was selfish, even more, to keep the drawings tucked into his traveling case, and not to throw them into the fireplace. He slid them far to the bottom, buried under all of his clothing, where he might look upon them again.
