Further evidence that the piper also should have taken the corpse’s pants. I mean, how awesome would this final page be if the zombie were in his skivvies? [Cold Feet, 2000]

I mean, you walk in and discover your cow is now eating the flesh of a dead piper and your response is…. go hum? Work up a little horror there, madam! [Cold Feet, 2000]

We’re no doctors, but if your goal is to break a frozen corpse’s feet off at the ankles, would just dropping the legs do the trick? This top hatted fellow must have spotted the world’s daintiest ankles. [Cold Feet, 2000]

How cold can you go before frostbite sets in? Look at the sheer redness of the knees, knuckles, and nose. That’s how you do it, m’dears! [Cold Feet, 2000]

Okay. Lot going on here. We know Willie is taking off to walk the roads. Does that have anything to do with the prominent Union Jack being put up in this scene? [Cold Feet, 2000]

Keen as we are on details, the braiding in Sophie’s hair is great, sure, but it’s the bobby pin walking stick that clinches everything. [Sophie’s Masterpiece, 2001]

Oh my, oh my, what is THIS we see??? Why, could it possibly be, CORRECT KNITTING NEEDLE PLACEMENT in a picture book? (This message brought to you by Betsy and her somewhat unhealthy obsession with the scourge of incorrect knitting needles in books for kids) [Sophie’s Masterpiece, 2001]

This landlady is so in-Jane Dyerlike in appearance that we are dying to know what prompted the illustrator to change her style so violently in this book. It verges on, but never quite reaches, the grotesque. [Sophie’s Masterpiece, 2001]

We were particularly interested in the choice to make Flossie appear as young as this. She looks to be four or so. Child protagonists are usually much older. It makes for a different (but not at all bad) kind of read. [Flossie and the Fox, 1986]

We can’t help but feel that the threat of the hound was far more effective when we couldn’t see it. And is that actually a hound? The snout doesn’t appear to be particularly hound-like. [Flossie and the Fox, 1986]

There would be any number of ways to tell that this book is from the past, but in this image the biggest difference is that nobody is looking down at their phones. Amazing, right? [Whatever Happened to the Dinosaurs?, 1984]

Kate suspected that this was a typo in the book. But you can see that in the same spread there’s a poster with the correct spelling. Could this be a case of not leaving enough space on that book cover for a “U”? [Whatever Happened to the Dinosaurs?, 1984]

Spats? Check. Chain for watch? Check. Satin top hat? Check. But honestly, can you seriously call yourself a representative of the people if you’re not wearing a sash that says the word “MAYOR” on it in big golden letters? Get it together, man. [Tootle, 1945]

Anyone else get the distinct impression that the illustrator and writer of this book were coming at it from two entirely different directions? This is supposed to be a scene of selfish indulgence. Instead, this little hippie engine is living his best life. That’s a legitimate frolic.[Tootle, 1945]
