zoetrope 0.2.0 is out. 🎬 Codex support now, not just Claude Code. and it drops into herdr as a plugin: press a key in an agent pane and zoe draws that session as a live flow graph over it. 800 ⭐ since I pushed it 3 weeks ago. still surprises me. 🙏 github.com/furkankly/zoetrope

it shows the timing, and i think time-travel via the scrubber helps a lot with sessions that are long running. that was one of the reasons i built it: bsky.app/profile/furk...

repo: github.com/furkankly/zo... try it in your browser via WASM, transcripts never leave your machine: zoetrope.furkankly.dev it speaks claude code today. hopefully more to come 👀

zoetrope — watch your agents work
A terminal UI that visualizes Claude Code agent sessions as a live flow graph — replay a finished transcript or follow a running one. Zero network IO; nothing leaves your machine.

so i gave it time travel. point zoetrope at a session and scrub back and forth. you watch subagents spawn and finish, tool calls fire, step by step.

you could turn those into memory files, but you can't make everything a memory. some things live in the history. so i end up with long sessions and long histories. and scrolling back through a wall of text tells me nothing about what happened when. a graph does.

sessions also got long. i keep resuming the ones that perform well, because a session with the right context tail just gets it: possibly esoteric multi-step tests, db reads, ci checks, deploy rituals. sequences of tool calls become well-defined workflows inside that session.

this got some love yesterday 🧡 so, why i built it: dynamic workflows normalized having many subagents working different parts of a problem inside a single claude code session. orchestration and context management became the interesting part. i wanted to see them unfolding.

longer term i want to support other agents beyond claude code.

try it on the web via WASM: zoetrope.furkankly.dev provably offline — no network stack in the dependency tree. transcripts are parsed in your browser: on chromium a file handle keeps the graph live, elsewhere it's a snapshot of dropped files. they never leave your machine.

built it because I wanted to watch my agents work, sessions unfolding as live graphs, subagents spawning, tool calls firing. that became another tool called zoetrope (Claude Code first, more to come 👀). built on @ratatui.rs 🧡

rataflow handles 10,000 nodes at the frame time React Flow needs for 625, totally different rendering architectures but was a fun comparison either way. wrote a 5-part series on the internals, starting with everything the browser does for you: furkankly.dev/posts/node-e...

Building a node editor on a grid of terminal cells: everything the browser does for you — Furkan Kalaycioglu
It started as one question: what would a node editor feel like if the only primitive I had was a terminal cell? I quickly realized every capability the browser hands you for free is one you build by h...

the fun part: a terminal has no compositor, no z-index, no coordinates past the top-left edge. nodes draw into scratch buffers, get clipped manually. crossing edges merge into junction glyphs (┼ ├ ┤). braille strokes for smooth diagonals. repo: github.com/furkankly/ra...

for the past few months i've been building rataflow: React Flow, but for the terminal. node-based UIs on ratatui with custom node/edge rendering, drag, pan/zoom, edge routing, minimap, auto-layout. every example runs in your browser via WASM (@orhun.dev 's Ratzilla): rataflow.furkankly.dev

people conflate this with ai making you dumber but thats not it. its still up to how well you know baking the cake. with ai generated code, the frosting becomes cheap and abundant but i keep asking how sustainable it is to rely on it.

there’s a whole class of mundane tasks i know claude does better than me, and its mostly the frosting not the cake. they are not essential but they make things feel done right. when i run out of credits my perfectionist brain goes dormant.

net productivity is definitely up with AI, but adapting to new slowdowns has been my main challange lately.

Something I haven't seen discussed too much about coding agents is that even though they make it easy to rapidly produce bad code, this also means that they make it easy to rapidly experience and learn from the shortcomings of different design designs, at a rate normally not possible.

also people will admire handwritten code the same way they admire the classic grind, even though most won’t have the patience for it anymore.

so i burn out faster, and claude’s “extra usage” pay as you go thingy feels like retail transactions that just let you keep playing longer. :D

it feels like retail vs classic world of warcraft. retail is fast paced constant decision making. i ship more and feel more productive but constantly think about the problem without “code breaks”.

tfw you hit your claude usage limit in the middle of implementation after a comprehensive design discussion. :( like what am i supposed to do now? software dev is starting to feel pay2win.
