For a change of pace regarding music with unknown releases dates, the October ’96 issue of Muzik featured a review of the “Beyond Real” single put out by Brooklyn’s Jigmastas sometime in 1996. (Music in reply) #hiphop
JIGMASTAS

Beyond Real Beyond Real, USA

A rare intelligence is displayed throughout this fine DJ Spinna production, one of the few new recordings to openly challenge the authenticity of the whole Keep It Real camp. 7 don't give a fuck about your keys of coke/Glocks that you claim you tote/ Lyrics that you said you wrote". The wind in New York is definitely changing its direction. Post-Real-hip-hopfundamentalism.

And moving on to reviews in MRR from October ’96, shout outs are due to: ● Assfort ● The Gaia ● Unbroken #hardcorepunk (Music in replies)
Review by Matt Average of Assfort’s ‘Bark Up The Wrong Tree’ EP in Maximum Rocknroll #161 (Oct 1996):

ASSFORT - "Bark Up The Wrong Tree" EP

By the time this review sees print these guys will have already I taken the country by storm again... As I understand it, this material was recorded in '93; nonetheless, these 3 songs rage. The title track starts off quiet and atmospheric, then it rips into the full-on attack these guys are known for. The other two are more direct with speedy attacks, varying tempos and a good song structure. ASSFORT!!! (MA) (NATRecords, Avenue Shinsaibashi#807,2-18-16Nishi-Shinsaibashi, Chu-Ku, Osaka 542, JAPAN)Review by Timojhen Mark of The Gaia’s ‘This One’ LP in Maximum Rocknroll #161 (Oct 1996):

GAIA – “This One” LP

A by-product of their U.S. tour of last year, this is six new studio tracks and five live tracks recorded at Gilman Street. Anyone who I had the pleasure to personally witness GAIA won't be surprised by the new stuff- agile metallic hardcore that lets up only enough for you to catch your breath. While they have become almost as known for being a all female band, it's the downright ferocious execution that I will continue to win over the real fans. Even with my predisposition against live recordings, the sheer impact of this band is obvious. Awesome! (TM)

(Sound Pollution, PO Box 17742, Covington, KY 41017)Review by Matt Average of Unbroken’s ‘Circa ‘77’ EP in Maximum Rocknroll #161 (Oct 1996):

UNBROKEN - "Absentee Debate/Crushed On You"

Whoa! ! Not at all what I expected. Last time I listened to these I guys they were boring metal shit, but then this single comes along... I The metal influence is still there, but the power that was absent before I is here, full on, with all instruments up front pummeling the hell outta your ears with gravelly vocals. Apparently this is their last, which is I too bad, 'cuz this stuff rages. (MA)

Good news from Peace Action Ōtautahi today. But the protest continues tomorrow because the summit is still promoting and celebrating NZ’s role in modern warfare. ##nzpol
PEOPLE POWER WORKS

BREAKING NEWS

ROCKETLAB BACKS OUT OF AEROSPACE SUMMIT.THIS IS A HUGE VICTORY.

Amidst mounting pressure by activists, the Rocketlab representative has backed away from appearing at the Aerospace Summit.

Rocketlab knows protests of this scale would be disastrous for their public image. They're losing out on business connections and major PR by dropping out of the summit.

That's a loss for Rocketlab, and a win for us.

But this fight isn't over- SYOS, NZS1S and NZDF representatives are still coming to the conference, and are not welcome in our city.

Friday, 7am onwards. Swarm the Summit!

As one example, this bit from Stuff’s recent look at the govt’s ‘achievements' shamefully accepts the govt’s framing around ‘balance’ in the curriculum (as though it was unbalanced before now) and accepts the racist view that a curriculum concerned with Māori & colonisation is unfair on colonisers.
Excerpt from Stuff's report card on Govt achievements in education during this term:

Restore balance to the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories curriculum

Achieved: Not yet. A new history curriculum has been drafted but will not be implemented until 2027. It shifts the focus away from what the Government called a “victims and villains” framing (centring on Māori and colonisation) and towards a broader focus including global civilisations, as well as new modules on civics education and financial literacy.

I'm not surprised, but it's still disgraceful that Hipkins is defending the FBI's presence in AoNZ. It would be bad under any US president, but Hipkins is saying that if he becomes PM after the election he wants to maintain NZ's intel, military & policing relationship with the Trump admin. #nzpol
Excerpt from NZ Herald article today:

Chris Hipkins promised Labour would recognise Palestine as a state, halt proposed public sector job cuts, and retain an FBI presence in New Zealand, as he took his election campaign to Porirua on Saturday.Excerpt continues:

The last question came from a man in the audience concerned about international affairs, asking “can you tell me why we have a CIA office in Wellington and do they put pressure on the Government?”
Hipkins clarified that the US does have an FBI office in its Embassy, as of July last year, but does not have a foreign intelligence office in the form of the CIA.Excerpt continues:

He defended the FBI’s increased presence, saying “this might sound unusual coming from a lefty politician like me, but it’s actually quite helpful to us”.
“A lot of the information that we rely on for our own security as a country actually comes from the information that we share with other like-minded countries like the US, Australia, Canada, the UK.”

THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB

One of the year's most celebrated international films, Kaouther Ben Hania's searing docudrama "The Voice of Hind Rajab' explores the frantic real-life mission by Palestinian Red Crescent volunteers to save a five-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab, trapped in a car under heavy gunfire in Gaza.

Utilising the actual audio of emergency phone calls made by Hind Rajab alongside the dramatic recreation of the call-centre volunteers tasked with coordinating her rescue, a maddening picture emerges of the tangled web of military and governmental bureaucracy blocking rescue units as a young girl's pleas for help intensify. The result is both a gripping race-against-the-clock thriller and a devastating reality-check on the ghastly human toll inflicted on families.

Obviously staffing and resourcing need to increase to ease pressure on the health system (and reduce staff stress), but that alone won’t fully address the problem. Better sickness prevention & health protection measures are essential to reduce the demand in the first place #nzpol
NZ Herald article headline from 15/09/2026:

Tauranga Hospital Emergency Department nurses declare state of emergencyNZ Herald article excerpt from 15/09/2026:

Nurses at Tauranga Hospital have declared a state of emergency after a patient collapsed in the Emergency Department waiting room.

More than 100 New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) members and ED nursing staff wrote to Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora’s chief executive and the Midland/Te Manawa Taki region’s executive director on September 8.

They called for urgent recruitment, saying “exceptional demand” has become their “daily reality”.Excerpt continues:

The union’s letter said the ED was “operating over capacity every day”.

“What should be considered exceptional demand has become our daily reality.”

It said staff were being asked to manage increasing patient numbers with “inadequate resources”, the risks of which were “no longer theoretical”.

EARTH'S GREATEST ENEMY

DOCUMENTING THE ENVIRONMENTAL COST OF HISTORY'S BIGGEST EMPIRE

'Earth's Greatest Enemy' reveals a hidden truth behind the climate crisis: the role of the U.S. military as the world's largest institutional polluter, tracing the link between war, empire, and ecological destruction.

Drawing on powerful testimonies from veterans, scientists, and frontline communities, it uncovers how military operations poison ecosystems, accelerate global warming, and sacrifice the future for endless expansion.

Token gestures that have come far too late & ignore Gaza. Even if we view the UK’s weak sanctions on Israeli “settlements” as a step in the right direction, it’s completely undone by the fact that those sanctions are to be coupled with sanctions on Iran – currently under attack by Israel & the US🧵
Excerpt from Al Jazeera article:
Ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, Miliband said new trading bans and sanctions would represent a “comprehensive reset” of the UK’s policy on Israel, amounting to an approach that “not only calls out the injustice [in Palestine], but acts”.
However, he added: “The sanctions regime will target illegal settlements and settlement expansion, not Israel.”Excerpt continues:
In support of Israel, Miliband also announced new sanctions against the financing arm of the Lebanese group Hezbollah – Al-Qard al-Hasan – and said the UK will reimpose sanctions on Iran, in line with those imposed by the European Union and United States.

Umm, quick quesion: who is the minister currently presiding over a collapse in the health system where there are day-long queues to get seen in hospital? #nzpol
Idiotic Instagram post by Simeon Brown showing an AI generated picture of the Kwik-E-Mart from The Simpsons with a line of people queueing outside. He has renamed it Kiwimart and included a hamner and sickle to represent the Greens new policy.

The Sept. ‘96 issue of Vibe featured this review of Joi’s ‘Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome’ due to receiving the promo CD, but not many readers would’ve been able to hear it until years later. FYI: Betty Davis’s “If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up” is mistitled as “Take Me Home” in the review.
Review by Sacha Jenkins of Joi’s ‘Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome’ album in Vibe magazine Sept. 1996:

JOI AMOEBA CLEANSING SYNDROME

LIMP/EMI

Joi's debut, 1994's The Pendulum Vibe, was overlooked and/or misunderstood. The album's miraculous love crooning sprouted up in R&B's boring little garden like 3 pretty picket fence in the projects. Thankfully, Joi continues to kick and scratch at the boundaries of rhythm and blues with her new, impressive Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome.

Joi's arrangements, with backing by the 2 funky bugouts known as Fishbone, easily outweigh R&B's all-too-common drum machine gibberish. "Move On" borrows the zooming riddims of Anita Ward's 1979 disco classic "Ring My Bell," while "Take Me Home" features sly, punkadelic guitar riffs. "E'en So Lord Jesus" is a pristine a cappella gospel rant in which Joi paints high holy soundscapes. Honestly, cousin, ain't a damn thing changed. Joi's chance-taking persists-and beautifully.

Oh, and one more 30th anniversary for the road. “Behold My Kool Style”, the 2nd single by Aotearoa NZ’s Dam Native, was released sometime around 1 September 1996 and was first reviewed in Rip It Up’s Sept ’96 issue. [Music vid in reply] #hip-hop
DAM NATIVE

Behold My Kool Style

CD Single (Tangata)

What's taking so long? Dam Native dropped their debut single ‘Hori’fied One’ last October, and the word then suggested their first album would be unleashed in February. Now, 10 months on, single number two arrives out of nowhere, and Dam Native are demanding, ‘Behold My Kool Style’.

On the Zane Lowe produced track, Danny raps staunch, though hurriedly, over lightweight drum track, looped sax melody and dose of nifty scratching from Manuel Bundy.

As with ‘Hori’fied One’, 'Behold...’ is fundamentally class track, but boasts little of the attack and punch Dam Native’ are capable of live, leaving it far from reaching its potential.

More tasty, is the mellow, warm groove of the b-side, ‘Revolution (Mark My Words)’.

Rounding off the 30-year anniversaries with a few reviews of key releases for me from 1996 that featured in Jersey Beat’s Fall-Winter ‘96 issue: ● Anti-Matter – V/A compilation ● Crown of Thornz – Mentally Vexed #hardcore
Review by Rich Quinlan of Anti-Matter zine’s CD compilation in Jersey Beat #58 (Fall-Winter 1996):

ANTI-MATTER (Another Planet Records,740 Broadway, New York, NY, 40003) This compilation is generously brought to us compliments of Norm Arenas, formerly of Shelter, now in the brilliant Texas is the Reason. However, prior to his involvement in those bands, Norm was the creator/ editor and all around everything behind a great fanzine called Anti-Matter, and this compilation highlights bands that Norm featured in the zine. It is a pretty impressive line-up, ranging from the well known (CIV, Snapcase, Quicksand) to well hidden talent (check out the Threadbare song). There are sixteen big tracks on this disc, and to Norm's credit, he has found bands that are similar yet different. This is an undeniably great hardcore comp, but its true appeal comes from the fact that the bands span the map of hardcore musical avenues. Some of the standouts are Farside, 108, Strife, and Chamberlain (formerly Split Lip). You also get treats from Mouthpiece, Garden Variety and Sense Field. Overall, a very worthwhile compilation, and a celebration of diversity. Rich Q.Review by Phil Pinto of Crown of Thornz’s ‘Mentally Vexed’ CD in Jersey Beat #58 (Fall-Winter 1996):

CROWN OF THORNZ - Mentally Vexed (Another Planet) Well, this album has had its delays, including band members being involved in side projects, SKARHEAD, and other things. But they're back with a new one and they're fuckin’ intense! All the songs pretty much run into each other, so the brutality just pounds in your face. It's fresh N.Y.H.C., very original and very melodic, so hook up! - Phil P.

Keeping the momentum going, here’s a couple of reviews of longtime legendary releases from 1996 that featured in Hardware zine’s Autumn ’96 issue: ● Fall Silent – No Strength To Suffer" CD/LP ● Subzero – Happiness Without Peace CD #hardcore
Review by Nate Wilson of Fall Silent’s ‘No Strength To Suffer’ CD/LP in Hardware #9 (Autumn 1996):

FALL SILENT "Strength To Suffer" CD/Lp

I love these guys to death, yet they get the worst reviews in just about every 'zine I've seen them reviewed in. Maybe it's 'cos they are so metal. This is some heavy fucking stuff, with an allout guitar onslaught. Tons of harmonics keep this stuff interesting. Reno is where these S.E. warriors dwell, and they're lyrics are mil of intelligence, questioning the scene that they come from. Great personal lyrics keep my neck nodding. The only song that sucks on here is a cover of Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" (Yuck!!!). Do yourself a favor and pick this shit up! -NW

(Revolutionary Power Tools)Review by David Koenig of Subzero’s ‘Happiness Without Peace’ CD in Hardware #9 (Autumn 1996):

SUBZERO "Happiness Without Peace" CD

I know everybody is going to be like, "What!?" but I think this is not half bad. Pretty good actually. I remember seeing this band like back in 1990 and thought they sucked big time. I guess a few years can make a difference. They give nods to just about every NYCHC band that ever existed. The production and music is solid. Can't judge a book by its cover this time, guys. I like it. -DK
