I've seen some progressive commentators who get it, but I've yet to see anything similar from American politicians on the left. Here's @joshtpm.bsky.social discussing it in the context of America's misunderstanding of the sources and limits of U.S. power: talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/the-u...
A screenshot of what Josh Marshall wrote:

"I’ve talked a lot here about big think and the nature and limits of American power. I should conclude with what I hope goes without saying but still needs to be said. This breakdown in US-Canada relations isn’t just a misapprehension of the nature of American power. It’s deeply wrong, an unprovoked assault on friendly neighbors and longstanding partners with whom we share so much. As I wrote to a Canadian, discussing this this morning, this whole episode is a source of shame and embarrassment for the United States."

You're welcome! Here's an example of noctilucent clouds I captured back in June 2020, maybe 60-90 minutes after sunset. They're so otherworldly!

I find it a bit jarring that none of the media reports mentioned the fact that BC's health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, is a founding owner of a BC winery and has a lifelong passion for wine. In short, Henry directly profits from sale of what she calls "a leading cause of preventable death."
Dr. Bonnie Henry, the British Columbia Provincial Health Officer who's responsible for the health and wellbeing of the population, stands in front of a sign saying Living Well, Drinking Less. Nothing in the press conference, photo, or media reports acknowledged that Henry herself loves wine and in fact owns a fucking winery.

Two days ago, Dr. Bonnie Henry falsely claimed that proper precautions were followed, and that the air crew involved in transporting this infected person was at no risk of developing hantavirus. Henry's reassurances are troubling and do not correspond to the latest hantavirus transmission science.

In March 2020, Dr. Henry tried to comfort us by telling us we had very low risk. She did this on the same date the WHO declared a global pandemic for COVID-19, long after we knew our lives were about to change forever. Hearing Henry say the risk is low should set off all kinds of alarms!

Here's the real Orion moment of splashdown. Friends don't let friends share fake space photos.
jsc2026e022247 (April 10, 2026) - NASA's Orion spacecraft carrying Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), splashes down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:07 p.m. PDT, (8:07 p.m. EDT) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The Artemis II test flight launched on Wednesday, April 1, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin its 10-day journey around the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. NASA’s Landing and Recovery team and the U.S. military are coordinating efforts to extract the Artemis II crew from the Orion spacecraft. Credit: NASA/Josh Valcarcel

This image of Earth made me cry. We live on the surface of a jewel spaceship, and yet we're busy wrecking it and each other.
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

? I honestly don't know what you're referring to in my statement. Or have I 'rationalized' elsewhere that I'm not aware of? Canada is one thing, but the idea that countries like France and Japan are going to come to the US's aid over the Strait of Hormuz seems absurd.
We condemn in the strongest terms recent attacks by Iran on unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, attacks on civilian infrastructure including oil and gas installations, and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces.

We express our deep concern about the escalating conflict. We call on Iran to cease immediately its threats, laying of mines, drone and missile attacks and other attempts to block the Strait to commercial shipping, and to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law, including under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The effects of Iran’s actions will be felt by people in all parts of the world, especially the most vulnerable.

Consistent with UNSC Resolution 2817, we emphasise that such interference with international shipping and the disruption of global energy supply chains constitute a threat to international peace and security. In this regard, we call for an immediate comprehensive moratorium on attacks on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas installations.

We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait. We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning.

We welcome the International Energy Agency decision to authorise a coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves. We will take other steps to stabilise energy markets, including working with certain producing nations to increase output.

We will also work to provide support for the most affected nations, including through the United Nations and the IFIs.

Maritime security and freedom of navigation benefit all countries. We call on all states to respect international law and uphold the fundamental principles of international prosperity and security.

As those 619 people overheated to death, B.C.'s premier told the public that "as Dr. Henry said, fatalities are a part of life." Their callousness was meant for those dying unnecessarily of covid, not excessive heat. But something tells me the distinction was lost on those dying in that moment.

So we're in the midst of a national election campaign, and Canada's Conservative leader seems to have this weird career-long obsession with "common people." Of course his policies won't help us, but we seem to be quite the curiosity to the guy.

The thing Mark Carney has that Poilievre can't buy is a level of sincerity, of realness. There's a sense that when Carney talks, there's an actual person there. But when Poilievre speaks he basically becomes an amalgamation of rightwing talking points. Can he actually hear himself?
