My Ides of March fun fact is that the place where Caesar was stabbed is now a cat sanctuary, and I think it’s beautiful that creatures with tiny knives on their feet live there

A welcome sign with a tabby cat and behind it are the ruins of Largo di Torre Argentina

Actually I lied. I have one more thing to say and THEN I will be done. Trigger warnings (chatter about SA and other forms of abuse) and mild spoiler warnings from brief references to events in the book apply. (1/11)

Treating the blue curtains tumblr post as a foundational reader's lynchpin rather than a mildly amusing anecdote is maybe not the best idea. Statistically speaking, a concerning number of grown folk cannot actually comprehend what they read and drama like this makes that real fucking obvious.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I often think about how Boomers are struggling to reckon with the no contact fallout from emotionally abusing millennials and Gen X kids & how millennials & Gen X parents will face the same reckoning with kids they harmed via repeated, preventable covid infections & careless use of tech like AI.

in other less annoying book news: (1) i did finish the book! it's not groundbreaking but it's a fun one-off and there are some good moments and good prose (2) i found one of the building block novels for post-spellplague DND canon super cheap (prince of lies) so i'll be thumbing through that next

crazy book takes i have seen in the last 24 hours: "it goes against the point of a morally grey character to solidify the character" "he cannot be an unreliable narrator in his own inner monologue" i'm starting to believe that kingfisher's fundamental mistake was overestimating her target audience

I don't have as deep of a history with romance as many of you, but I'm already tired of the discourse around romance as a worthy genre. However, this thread is SO MUCH more than that. Formulaicity is such an eye-opening concept for me that this thread has made me a better writer & a better reader.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

CSP being pressed to take even just /kissing/ off their asset store and FA being told that plus sized characters are considered adult should be a giant waving red flag to folks. Sex workers have /always/ been right to say these policies never stop with 1 type of content. They always wanna ban more.

Also, any artist who claims that their art isn't political either doesn't understand art or doesn't understand politics. "My art is about bringing us all together!" Okay, that sounds political. "My art is just about having a good time, it's not that deep." Okay, that's also political.

also if we're going to talk about so-called 'social contagion' let's talk for about the moral panic and resulting stochastic terror around trans people that the far right has drummed up. you know, something that is ACTUALLY getting people killed
