Getting good at building software still takes reps, and early on, you should type most code by hand. When you do use agents, read every line they write. Some teams skip human review on low-risk changes these days, but they've read enough code to know what low-risk means.

Three free challenges for learning to fetch data from an API, in order. On each one, think about the empty states and edge cases (e.g., a failed API request). What should they look like? Thinking about these things when you build will help you build better projects.

Keep a running doc of the key decisions you make in your projects, like: "Cached the API response for 10 minutes, so the app stays within the free tier's daily request limit." When an interviewer asks about your work, you can pick the example that best fits the question.

Build a portfolio project people use, even a small tool for your family. Keep improving it as their needs change. It shows you can maintain a project and builds your product sense. Write up your key decisions too, including where you went a different way from the AI.

A rule of thumb from our guide to escaping tutorial hell: spend about 20% of your time learning concepts and 80% building projects. If you get stuck while building, that's a good thing. It shows a knowledge gap you can fill.

Write a README for every project, including why you made the choices you did. Why Flexbox here, why Grid there. Where you used AI and where you disagreed with it. If you can't explain a choice in writing, you probably don't fully understand it yet.

Our advice for beginners using AI coding assistants: keep the chat, lose the autocomplete, avoid agents (for now). Ask the assistant to explain things, then write the code yourself. If you can't explain something back, don't use it yet.

You're not falling behind. It's easy to think everyone's speed-running learning with AI. We still see people get stuck where they always have: their first project. The advice still holds: pick something small, build it by hand, and push yourself further with each build.

Frontend Mentor @frontendmentor.io · 21/09/2026
Even as AI writes more of the code, beginners still need hands-on time: writing code, fixing their own bugs, reading and reviewing code. That's how you build the knowledge and the vocabulary to get a good result, whether you're writing the code yourself or directing an agent.
