We protested a press conference organized by the "Toronto Concerned Citizens Coalition" this morning showcasing a disappointing assortment of anti-progress viewpoints including opposition to bike lanes, bus lanes, homeless shelters and harm-reduction sites.

A group of high-profile individuals, including a Balance on Bloor rep, will be holding a press conference Tuesday where they'll advocate against bike lanes, bus lanes and more. We'll be there to remind them of how unpopular and out-of-touch their views are.

Earlier today, almost 50 cyclists joined us to protest several dozen businesses along Bloor near Royal York involved in the anti-bike-lane movement. We've placed stickers in the area with a list of alternatives we're asking local residents to shop at. Press release at fridaysforfutureto.org.

We're holding a protest against specific businesses we've identified as having significant ties to the anti-bike-lane movement. We continue to support local businesses that are not contributing to the deaths of cyclists. We hope to see you there, July 5 at High Park!

Our statement re: the ongoing fires in Manitoba 👇
Fridays for Future Toronto expresses solidarity with Manitobans as a devastating wildfire spreads through their province.

While we are not in a position to speculate on the original cause of this specific fire, it is clear that decades of deliberate inaction and human-caused climate change have led to adverse weather effects occurring at unprecedented rates. Politicians may forget, but the planet doesn’t.We welcome the immediate actions announced by the Manitoba government to evacuate areas considered in danger as well as the intervention of the Canadian Armed Forces. These are necessary actions to minimize the damage this wildfire poses to human life, as well as the broader ecosystem we’re a part of.

We must act with a similar urgency to address the root cause of the continent-wide increase in wildfires each year. We cannot continue allowing giant corporations to spew carbon dioxide and destroy our planet to satiate their insatiable thirst for profit, nor can we count on them to set standards for mitigating the damage they have willingly caused. We call on Canadian governments at all levels as well as governments across the world to keep true to their climate promises by phasing out our reliance on fossil fuels, moving on from the car-centric societal model of the 20th century, and switching to cleaner sources of energy including solar, wind and nuclear.

We call on them to do this before it’s too late.

(1/2): Today, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice granted an injunction to ban the removal of Toronto bike lanes, until a final decision is made in @cycletoronto.bsky.social et al.'s Bill 212 Charter Challenge. Read our full statement below 👇 #biketo #bill212 #onpoli 📷Martin Reis
Bill 212 Charter Challenge: Bike Lane Removals Temporarily Halted

Statement from Fridays for Future Toronto --> Fridays for Future Toronto welcomes the Ontario Superior Court of Justice’s decision banning the province from removing Toronto’s bike lanes until a final decision is made on the application.Having access to safe, accessible and efficient bike lanes is particularly important to young people. Whether this is because they’re too young to get a driver’s license, because they can’t afford a car, or simply because they want a healthy, environmentally friendly mode of transportation, many young individuals find cycling the most well-suited means to get around. They feel empowered by the autonomy and independence cycling gives them.Youths also stand to be the most impacted by climate change stemming from carbon emissions as they inherit a world riddled with greenhouse gases and other atmospheric pollutants. Cycling is one of the most energy-efficient mode of transportation and every single bicycle is a potential carbon-emitting vehicle taken off the road.

(THREAD: 1/5) #Engineers have a duty to keep society safe, symbolized by the iron ring received by Canadian engineering graduates. Why, then, is #Stantec working with #ONgov to rip up #yyz bike lanes, given that the province’s own files show that doing so will endanger lives? Photos: Martin Reis

(1/3) #Stantec, you claim to be working to build the future. You claim to be working to build green solutions. But the minute that money hits the table, you rip out one of the best tools we have against the climate crisis. #bikeTO #ONpoli #stantec #yyz #toronto #climateaction #safestreets #fordsucks

This morning, Fridays for Future & community occupied #Stantec offices. Our message: by working with #ONgov to rip up Toronto #bikelanes, you betray the values you claim to stand by and put lives at risk. Stantec, cancel the contract. Full letter on our website (see bio). #ONpoli #safestreets

Ford’s Bill 212 causes traffic, kills indigenous consultations and erases bike lanes. He will go to any lengths for money and power. We can’t let him have this! Join us in protest on December 7.
On Monday the Ford government passed legislation to remove bike lanes on Bloor, Younge, and University. Internal documents show it will make traffic worse, and make roads more dangerous. This bill also eliminates indigenous consultation and environmental assessments from the highway 413 development. Doug Ford will go to any lengths necessary to secure money and power including disrespecting the people of this land, and the land itself. Bill 212 is an attack on Ontarians, that's why we're taking action join us to show the fight is not over! Join us on December 7th at 3:00 at 195 Northseman St. or Ride with us from High Park at 2:00!
