The stewardship of the Great Lakes depends on cooperation, respect, and a common understanding of shared waters. IAGLR will continue to use the name Lake Ontario across all publications, conferences, and activities, regardless of the recent federal change to the GNIS. bit.ly/4y2OZkP (1/3)

As Exec Director of @iaglr.bsky.social, I want to emphasize that our mandate depends entirely on clear, consistent, and scientifically accurate communication. We are maintaining the use of the name Lake Ontario across all our scientific activities. Cross-border science requires stable terminology.

This winter has been a real one to date for the ice cover of the Great Lakes that has reached about 40% today. The champion is Lake Erie (95%) while Lake Ontario is at about 20%. Ice plays critical roles (ecology, erosion, weather etc..) for this region. Data: www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/#ov...
