Siri: “someone sent a long message, read it?” Me: yes, I’m mentally ready for this essay Siri: “are you sure? Are you sitting down for this?” Me: “I’m never going to be fully prepared, but hit me with it” Siri: “Don’t say I didn’t warn you, this one’s a doozy. ‘Thank you for hanging out’”

This is huge for component libraries, written as web components, that have to somewhat recreate native CSS due to environment limitations. 👀

It’s interesting to think about how media queries eventually aligned on a pretty standard set of values (young people will never know why 768px is so important) But container queries probably never will, just due to their nature.

lol I thought you had a blog post up about this, I was confused. Ignore me

I think @lea.verou.me put up a command invoker proposal recently in which you could maybe do something like that. Would have to dig into my emails to find it again though. Maybe open-ui GitHub?

This is a huge experiment for web component people that want/need to have custom select and custom option elements!

I have a codepen up already, but nothing written yet Only works in regular dom, but should work in shadow dom with :has-slotted (Which is why I was thinking about it, since I’m trying to get a WebKit PR up for that)

Anthony Frehner @frehner.me · 23/07/2026
Also: not currently possible in web component land due to needing functional :has-slotted() But maybe that’ll happen someday too

Anthony Frehner @frehner.me · 23/07/2026
Oh this is maybe fun - a pure CSS way of hiding a “slot” of children if there are any children in that slot that aren’t allowed. For example, a Button Group component that only allows Buttons as children; otherwise the slot is display:none’d Maybe I’ll write a tiny thing about this.

Not only validation, but also type-ahead / prefill address, which I believe has shown to help increase conversion rates (speaking not from any “inside” knowledge here, just from what I remember from before jobs)
