Clearly it's not going to apply to *every* book. But major characters like Spider-Man and Batman have decades upon decades of stories. Anecdotal it may be, but it can be daunting for people unfamilair with the medium to approach them for the first time.

As someone who reads both manga and Western comics, I think a big part of the appeal of manga is that you don't need to familiarize yourself with 30 years of canon before starting a book. Just buy Vol.1 and go from there.
