Radar: Your films came, sir, from the Tabasco Film Company, Havana, Cuba. Henry: Tee-riff! Great. Great. Henry, reading film label: "Yvonne, Renee and Loretta in What the Parrot Saw." Radar: What's the other one say, sir? Henry, reading: Oh, uh "Renee, Loretta and the Parrot in What Yvonne Saw."

Any major project like this should be required to, prior to breaking ground on any structures, repair the nearest X square miles of PR's aging water lines. X is whatever amount needs to be repaired to stop losing the amount the project will require.

a meeting where they discussed setting the timeline so she would've been somewhere in the 12-14 year old range. So, yeah, the 80s were... different. 2/2

You missed one other aspect of the movie that didn't age well, unfortunately. If you track the canon, Indy was the sort of academic who, in the modern era, would've earned an invitation to Epstein Island. He was 26 when he and Marion met; she was 16. And it almost was worse--there's minutes of 1/x

Thank you for the clarification on that point. It allays some of worry, there. My main concern is that independence would be 'managed' by my country, leaving the current system intact. Much as I wish it were otherwise, we're sometimes just that freakin' evil.

I get what you and the other independence supporters are saying here, but wouldn't an independent PR also end up in the hands of that same right-wing party?

What I don't see is how you avoid the need for such a transition to taxing those industries if you go full independence, instead. Tax them fairly, they leave to countries that let them get away with it; fail to tax them, and you've changed nothing other than who the oligarchs are paying.

This is about where I am--when we're talking about drinking the stuff. However, coffee as an additive/flavoring in something already very sweet--tiramisu, coffee candy, chocolate-covered-espresso beans--all very, very tasty. It's weird.

The Selena Gomez cinnamon ones are still the most "Okay, so I need to stretch these out over a w--oops, i ate the whole package again" flavor, IMNSHO. Flavor aside, something about the creme compound makes it very easy to separate from the cookie, easing the creation of a quad-stuffed monstrosity.

KPS is an amazing piece of work. I'd love to see a movie adaptation someday. I do think you could've just named the book "KPS" and held the full reveal back, but that's a minor quibble.

Part of the problem was that the second film, while definitely having the sorts of new ideas that could've breathed new life into the franchise, was undermined by a key flaw that made it impossible even for many folks who wanted that new direction to enjoy as a film. (2 words: Casino Arc).

I agree. I'm questioning your apparent belief that with such a mandate, the US would handle independence in anything other than the most callous and neglectful manner. I'm fine with PR independence, but I'm worried about PR becoming another Haiti.

See, that's my point. If D.C. were capable of instituting such a policy, they would've done a better job of managing PR as a territory in the first place, rather than leaving you to languish. Spontaneous abandonment is far more likely than thoughtful disengagement.

Streetlights, nothing. GenX was the "It's 10 PM, do you know where your children are?" generation. Those streetlights had been on for hours, and the parents were still answering 'No, but I'm sure they're fine'. The 80s were just a weird time for adolescents.

So what's the plan for PR independence? Assume the US simply says, "Okay, you're no longer a territory, have fun with that." Does PR have the resources to recover from colonial status on its own, or would it just need to beg a handout from some other world power?

freemage.bsky.social @freemage.bsky.social · 03/08/2025
My concern here is that if PR is granted independence, it would be on the terms of the party that does not want PR as a state (ie, the GOP). At best, this would mean straight abandonment. I know I am not well-versed in PR's status--would being cut loose with no support be superior to statehood?

is no less malignant than its fellow desert-based monotheisms. If you can't address that, without accidentally going into full-blown stereotypes (the obvious concern when showing the negative side of a minority culture/faith/ethnic group), then I'm not sure the effort is worth it. 3/3

Can you do a storyline about Asma coming to grips with the real meaning of the headscarf, in the way Joyce has had to come to grips with how toxic her belief was? Or one where a Rushdie stand-in comes to campus, but the event is canceled because of an active threat by Islamic extremists? Islam 2/x

Here's the issue with 'increasing Muslim representation' in your strip: Can you do it with the nuance and variability you do your Christian characters? Are you able to write a version of Mary who is a Muslim, actively judging everyone around them because they don't adhere to the Book? 1/x

Sadly, this isn't new. My fellow lefties forgave Clinton, despite both a proven affair with an underling AND a credible accusation of sexual assault from another. I've been saying for years now that the road to Trump was pointed out by Clinton's bent penis.

Yeah, those are likely the product of over-caution, honestly. Since they don't want to mock their target audience, they hire perfectly able actors to do the portrayals, making the demos absurdist fare. Mind you, I suspect that, in itself, is an over-reaction to the one commercial series that did 1/x

I said this is what they need to promise, not what they have done in the past. They've made some token gestures, but that's my point--they need something concrete on offer, not just vague, "We'll be better than Trump/the GOP" promises with no actual commitment.

Yup. My 13-points above are simply what I think is the best starting place. I'd ultimately want some amendments to the constitution, but that's SO damned hard that it'll be awhile before we can build that kind of momentum. Most of the above would be achievable by a Dem-dominant gov't, tho.

Overall, I like the cut of your jib. Ditching the 2-party system, unfortunately, requires one of the two parties that benefit from it to agree to step aside when they are at the peak of their power (and even then, requires a constitutional amendment to change how the electoral college functions).

GOP voters vote in the Dem primary to push a candidate who can't win in the general election onto the ticket. So we have to undermine the two-party system before moving forward with this specific reform. 2/2

There are, unfortunately, issues with getting rid of party registrations (which, to be clear, only really apply to primary voting--you aren't required to vote for your registered party during the general election). The big problem is that this leads to spoiler campaigns, where, say, a bunch of 1/x

Interesting, and understandable concerns. One reason I've supported statehood (beyond simply believing you should have representation in Congress) is my understanding that a lot of companies use PR as a place to bypass labor/environmental regulations.

If you're pro-Independence, cool. What I'm most against is the status quo, which clearly does the people of Puerto Rico no good whatsoever. If a referendum were held, with statehood or independence the only options, do you feel the indy movement would win?

That would literally require a series of Constitutional amendments to achieve, sans violent revolt. If we had the numbers to achieve that, we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

And that, to be blunt, is when Option B must be given serious consideration. I'll resist the urge to call for revolution so long as the option to vote our way out of this mess continues to exist, but once it has been actually blocked, then all bets are off.

13: Once all the above is locked in, enact a series of laws to make the 'norms' that the country used to rely on into hard-and-fast laws. Most notably, make certain positions, once appointed and confirmed by a new President, require the 'advice and consent' of the Senate to remove from office.10/10

3: Add "Medicare Prime" to the ACA offerings. This is just Medicare, but the books are kept separate--it has to charge a premium that ensures a marginal profit year-over-year. We won't need to outlaw private insurance--forced to compete, the private insurers will either die or evolve. 3/x

If we actually get a supermajority in both houses of Congress, then we could theoretically impeach Trump and Vance, as well as Thomas (for corruption) and Trump's Trio (for perjury during their confirmation hearings). Elect Tammy Duckworth as Speaker, and with the White House vacant, she is Prez.2/2
