I've experienced some highly memorable cavalry successes and failures in Sharp Practice but often find it is the threat that their presence poses that can have as much effect on how a game plays out as any glorious or inglorious charge. I mostly field 0-1 group per force.

That is not the case at all. I know for a fact they were well developed and thoroughly playtested. It takes a couple of games to learn how to get the best out of your force. That's a plus for me personally, but accept that it won't be to everyone's taste.

In this instance I suspect it's less about what forces to field and more about what characteristics each component of that force might be given within the rules to reflect their real life abilities. If someone else has had a stab at it and playtested it that can be a great help.
