I used to make websites (Blogger, JPG Mag, Fray). I wrote the book “Design for Community.” Now I grow flowers and keep animals at milkbarn.farm in Boring, Oregon. No dooming in my replies. There's already enough doom in the world.

If tech journalists need to be on twitter in order to cover ai, I think the real story they really should be covering is why the only place they can accurately cover ai news is a far-right propaganda platform run by a white supremacist billionaire.

YES AND: The lack of things on it was the lure! It was an invitation. So many years of my life going, "oh, there's no site for that? I could start one!" What's the point of posting anything in a world where the search engines just answer questions and don't link? When the barriers are so high?

The men who did this have names. Elon Musk. Dario Amodei. Satya Nadella. Mark Zuckerberg. Sundar Pichai. Jensen Huang. Greg Brockman. Trump and his whole administration helped them. Direct your anger at them. www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

We were there when Google was new. It was great. We were there when the web was born. It was astonishing. We don't have to be convinced when new tech is worth it. It's obvious. AI is obvious, too. It's obviously terrible.

My goal has never been total self-sufficiency (that's a self-destructive myth), just to have more experience growing things and learning how to make them last. But there is something special about being able to create a meal from things that you grew and preserved.

Yesterday I made slow cooker chicken with our own canned tomato sauce, our garlic, and several of these chipotle peppers and goddamn it's good.

Also, yes, Pepperoncini peppers turn red if you let them ripen all the way. They get sweeter too!

The goats are spicy, yes, but the peppers are not. At least, not today.

Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 13h
It's funny, the goats have been exposed to enough peppers that they know some are spicy and some aren't, so they gently nibble them to test, and then feast when they realize they're not spicy.

Pickled 8 quart jars of Pepperoncinis and decided I had enough so the goats helped me dispose of the rest. (Don't worry, they're not spicy.)

We spent a generation telling students the humanities are moribund, and they should all study STEM, only for the greatest advances in STEM in recent years to raise fundamental questions about the nature of personhood and identity that require the humanities to answer. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/u...

Religious Scholars Met With Anthropic. What They Heard Stunned Them.

Just a public reminder to everyone that you can read something annoying here and then say whatever stupid thing you want in response out loud with your mouth in the real world and then NOT reply anything here. It's amazing. Feel free to use this post to try it.

100%. It loses money and always will. They don't care. They are building it out of an emotional need, not a business case.

Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And that's gonna be harder.
0392
Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think this is important because, to fully end the age of AI slop, we don't just have to regulate these companies out of existence and burn the machines that once housed the code, but we also have to teach a generation of men to develop the emotional intelligence they need to be among humans again.
1558
Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It also leads them to ignore the feelings (which don't exist remember) of the writers and the artists they ripped off to get here. It's a lack of emotional intelligence all the way down.
1374
Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And because they have no emotional intelligence, they think that content generated by AI is the same as a book by an author or a work of art from an artist. The failure that led them to AI in the first place is the same thing that makes them unable to see that the output is crap.
1498
Derek Powazek @fraying.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The people forcing AI into the world are so rich, they could employ as many people as they want for as long as they want to so whatever they want. BUT THEY ARE SCARED OF OTHER PEOPLE. That's why they're doing this. It's a critical failure of emotional intelligence.

And the whole thing would be unnecessary if they'd just learned how to talk to people, how to work with people, how to be comfortable with other people's emotions and their own.
