Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 22/08/2026I did that once and the small girl very seriously told me she had six! Then went on to describe them, their names and everything. I said she seemed quite young to be the mum of six and she just responded “hmmm” as if I were rude to bring that up… 020
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 17/05/2026Does anyone know the proportion of university courses that have exams in New Zealand? I’m sure I saw something from my uni that said we needed to get approval to have exams and were encouraged not to, but I must have deleted the email! 010
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 11/04/2026I (in NZ) would say dungarees for those too. Overalls I think of like the kind mechanics or CSI workers use that cover the arms too 220
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 05/03/2026Also this one is great - designed by Te Hiku for reo and English including those who combine both kaituhi.nzkaituhi.nzKaituhi - Automatic te reo Māori, NZ English and Bilingual transcriptionsKaituhi is a web-based transcription tool that automaticallytranscribes te reo Māori and NZ English. 110
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 20/02/2026Are they taking the piss with the redactions here? This is ridiculous - they’ve included very few emails (not even the same number as were on the contributing group) and the ones they have included are almost entirely redacted. 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 07/02/2026The librarians at my library didn’t even know there was a limit to how many suggestions for purchase you could make through the app in one year until I came along. They were shocked! So they suggested I email suggestions instead. 040
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 06/02/2026Were these the inspiration for Under the Mountain?!? 010
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 23/12/2025So the minister recalls 6 phone calls (unspecified) and found 2 emails from principals and 1 from a board chair (received after the OIA request so wouldn’t have influenced what she said). Hardly an overwhelming response in support of her removing the clause to give effect to te Tiriti! 182
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 09/12/2025This is one to follow - the ministry of education has admitted to using AI in the development of the social sciences curriculum and this person has asked to see what that looked like - chat logs prompts etc 021
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 30/11/2025Apparently migraines are a common perimenopause symptom, particularly if they’re in the luteal phase because progesterone drops then 020
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 30/11/2025Oh sorry to hear that! Is it useful to know what worked for me? I was also getting them every day for long periods 100

Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 28/11/2025It wasn’t in the Literacy & communications and maths strategy, it’s from the Common Practice Model document. Seems like a basic thing to get wrong! Does she not fact check?? 000
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 27/11/2025Can you make an OIA request of an MP who isn’t a minister? 220
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 25/11/2025Will be following this one! Did you know you can create an account and follow a request to be emailed when there are updates? So handy! 000
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 10/11/2025Also good because the responses then become out in public too 010
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 10/11/2025Do you put them on fyi? I quite like the added accountability of it being publicly available right from first submitting the request. Would help with establishing patterns too 130
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 06/11/2025Bear in mind while reading they have mandated 1 hour a week to social sciences in years 0-8 and 3 hours in years 9 and 10. And also secondary school starts in year 9 so they have generalist teachers up to year 8. 000
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 06/11/2025Hey #SSchat folk - I'd love to hear your thoughts on the draft social sciences curriculum just released by the NZ Ministry of Education. Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 13/10/2025Mata Lulu by Lani Young would be great. It’s aimed at children so has simple language but layered stories. 000

Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 24/08/2025I started getting them with perimenopause - always in the luteal phase when progesterone drops - hormone therapy has pretty much banished them 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 10/08/2025English also has the soft t! In words like stop - or anything with a fricative like s preceding the t, the t is soft 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 09/08/2025So the consideration shouldn’t be language of origin, it should be place in the scope and sequence thinking about starting with the most frequent and easiest to learn and moving to least frequent and harder 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 09/08/2025When the conversation really should be about when is an appropriate point in the scope and sequence to introduce that grapheme phoneme correspondence? Possibly the diphthongs in the Kupu in this book should be later in the scope and sequence (eg the ae in marae) but the rest are easy and frequent 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 09/08/2025I don’t think we need to take out words that are commonly used in English (like Koro, hangi, karakia etc) because they are originally from Māori. Many words in English are from different origins -it’s like saying we can’t have the word machine because it has the French /sh/ sound for the ch digraph. 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 09/08/2025Surely this argument only works if you assume that the children do not have those kupu in their oral language lexicon? This book is revision for long vowels, so they already should know that vowel graphemes can represent different phonemes. 1/2 100
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Not really, NZ English has plenty of reo embedded within it, so it would make sense (to me at least) to work out a scope and sequence that recognises that 110
Frank Wilson @frankwilson.bsky.social · 08/08/2025I don’t understand why NZ doesn’t have a scope and sequence that includes te reo GPCs. If we follow the generally agreed rule that we should go from easiest and most frequent GPCs to hardest and least frequent, I would guess reo ones would fit in somewhere before the middle of the sequence. 110

And this 1 is interesting… In response to this request about how many Māori and Pacific people they asked to contribute on the SS and Aotearoa histories curriculum, the MoE state they didn’t consider it relevant. 11512
